You should put rat disks on all the lines, all big boats have them to keep rodents out when staying for a long time. They should be about the size of a Lp record in a non chew-able material secured on all lines about a yard from the boat. There is a good reason they were invented long ago as rats climb very well on almost anything, or invite a strong cat to live onboard and clean and feed it instead, up to you, it was tradition to have a ships cat back in the day. Happy hunting.
@mhoover
@mhoover 5 месяцев назад
Fun fact... Those disks are required by the ports to keep the rats from coming ashore.
@agw5425
@agw5425 5 месяцев назад
@@mhoover If they work one direction they should work the other, but rats can swim so if they climb or fall of a ship odds are high they would survive and make it ashore, but the disks would stop them getting on again or to lett "local" rats aboard. I think it is in the ships interest more to have them on all lines in every port. If I had a wooden ship and/or with food stored aboard I would insist on having them.

Internally, if you want to know where rats or mice are getting in or moving about, then lightly sift some flour onto the area and look for the footprints. Sometimes you can track them back and the flour is harmless.

Hi Simon, sadly, that "brace and bit" isn't EXACTLY how it is supposed to be used 😅 Its a batteryless drill 😊 If you want to add to your " old school " tools, then you want wats called a " Yankee screwdriver " again, a batteryless tool My dad, who had been a carpenter for 45 years until retirement, used to use it all the time

That old tool is known as a 'brace', the drill shank was known as the 'bit', together they were called a 'brace and bit', They were the essential tool of any builder, carpenter, voat builder before electric drills came along. I inherited my one from my father, who was given it by his father when he became an apprentice at age 14, so back in the 1940's.

I think it is a joint thing. You are saving Sarinda but she is also saving you two. What else would you be putting your talents to ? As for Roland, get some bulk peppermint oil, citronella oil or eucalyptus oil and spread it around the boat and especially at suspected entry points. He wouldn't have come aboard alone, he'll be having parties and babies if he gets a chance. He can swim, climb and eat his way through many materials but hates the above aromas.

Primer paint will get dirty pretty quickly. It dries with a texture (or tooth) to help subsequent coats stick better and tends to attract dust unless covered with a top coat. The gloss floor paint may be tricky to add another coat to because it doesn’t have a tooth and is smooth. The red paint in the bilge maybe red lead or just red oxide. Probably need to test it.

I would suggest the rat is climbing your ropes. If that is the case, you’ll need a rat guard for each rope that goes to the shore from the boat. This is what we use on the big ships.

Thank you for the rat update. We were curious what had happened with the little rodent invader and if you caught anything in the traps. I imagine they can do quite a bit of damage over time if left unchecked, especially on a wooden boat. Timely spotting of that hole in the transom area.

Given the extent of rot in you ship, I believe the problem of water ingress was present perhaps when the craft was new. This situation was either because of materials, design, or both. Obviously, you are trying to reconstruct the craft so that it can sail once again. However as you refurbish things, keep in mind the inherent problems that brought the ship to where it is and seek to make it immune to those prior issues/problems. Please note that I think you are doing a superb job and I look forward to seeing things progress. Cheers!

Going back to the episode where you encountered a rat and the other episode where you though that the rat may be getting into the boat then pay attension to the outside mooring ropes ropes, it would be a good idea to fit metal or plastic discs such a large paint tin or plastic bucket lids to the ropes to stop any predator from entering the boat excluding squirels who have an IQ of nearly 200 and will bypass anything in their path.

If your going to use a lot of two pack paint Gemma, you need a full head air helmet with pumped air from outside. You can get back / belt packs but in confined spaces you will need a ton of filters. Two pack is a stronger paint, but has a high health hazard to your lungs, more so than any other paint, which is untreatable and for life. Emphysema is one, and get that bad you will need oxygen bottles to breath with eventually in later life or sooner.

Inside the boat, it's a sole, outside, it's a deck. Simon and Gemma always said "floor" when they first started, but nowadays they alternate with the nautical terms. Edit: I continued watching, to the point where Simon talks about a "floor", and he is using the correct term. The "floors" are the joists which support the "sole".

@jaygee5693 20 years in the Navy in all sorts of boats and ships. Never heard the term sole in my life before.
@jaygee5693
@jaygee5693 5 месяцев назад
@@alangurman3961 I shouldn't have said nautical. It's shipwrights' terminology, they tend to use traditional terms for everything in their trade, including the parts of a boat. Some of the viewers who watch other channels where traditional shipwrights are building, restoring or repairing boats, had been known to "correct" Simon and Gemma when they said front instead of forward, right instead of starboard, floor instead of sole, or joist instead of floor. Simon got it right for them in this one. In the Navy, did you call the floor of a cabin the floor, or the deck, and was that the Royal Navy?

The red paint in your bilge I have no doubt is what was called "tinners red". That coating has an exceptionally high lead content as it was used to coat the inside of wooden box gutters that were built into the roofs of homes built from the 1890's to the 1930's in the US. Think of it like lead in a brush on form used as waterproofing. Be very cautious. 👍 Tinners red as a color is still available today, without lead.

Great stuff. I am always surprised, and pleased for you, when you remove a frame that has turned to dry bread and the hull underneath that it was sitting on is just fine. Thankfully. Hope things keep moving and you get to replace the deck this summer. Perhaps those panels were inserted to protect the hull from something banging against the hull planks from inside the engine room. Maybe you could make those discs you see on mooring lines to stop rats from climbing aboard. The brace will be the perfect tool to use on the bronze screws - so much control.

I remember finding one of those in my Grandfathers tool drawer. I love old tools.

That transom is one serious piece of work to be done and the rot there will only get worse as time passes good luck 😊😊

Great to see all the amazing work you are both doing. Just a thought to be aware of areas where rats have been. In and around the water Weils disease could be lurking. Often overlooked as we all get on with daily life afloat, but it is a nasty disease, and worth being mindful of its existence. Best of luck and keep up the good work

Bit and Brace...the original Carpnter's cordless. That's how holes were drilled when I was a kid. As for screws, the incredible Yankee Screwdriver was invented that could drive a 2 inch screw in one second.

My grandfather called it a wheel brace. In fact i still have it and use it. You are right, it gives you control on what you are drilling, or screwing.

It is a brace and bit! I still use mine but somehow have 'mislaid' some of the bits.

A wheel brace is slightly different ,and yes you change you car wheels with it.

It’s called a Hand brace and the drill or screwdriver in the end is the Bit ie the brace and bit. Oh and that word for dating trees is dendrochronology. But it only tells ya how old the tree was/is . Great entertainment watching you both always cheers me up 😂😁

I find paint is extremely difficult to get right. Sometimes it is nothing to do with the price or the manufacturer but the unknowns in the formula. I used to say the best home gloss paint was Woolworths as it was liquid paint, had lead in it, went on beautifully and dried properly. That is surely what you want from a paint! Where would you get it now?

Well done for the paint. If it works it works.

There's a guy rebuilding and strengthning a 30 some foot wooden powerboat in Australia with a RU-vid channel and he uses a bit and brace and differents sizes of wood planes to do it.
