Sharing my new master plan for Beating Dino Flagellants in the JBJ. Let me know if you have had success doing it naturally... Looking for stability the rest of 2020 we shall see how this works out. Purchase Be Eazy Mugs here: bit.ly/2QMQqRw

What helped for me is keeping nutrients at 5 Nitrate and 0.06 phosphate. Running uv sterilizer for 23 hours a day and turn it off for 1 hour and add bacteria so they have time to attach to rocks etc before the uv kills them. Also at night scrub off the Dino's because the cells will float in the water so the uv picks them up faster. I add the bacteria because Dino's simply outcompete the "good bacteria" if you add bacteria they will have a bigger army to fight the Dino's

Any other way to beat it without the UV? Kinda pricey for my range.

3 day blackout, skim wet, no water changes... I had this issue last month. Low nutrients is often the culprit, so don’t do water changes that adds back nutrients they need. Any how, just shareing what I learned from others.

CJ couple questions on your UV. 1. What time period are you running the UV on? 2. What pump are you using for the UV?
@MeetTheSLAYER
@MeetTheSLAYER 4 года назад
You went about the right path to beating DINO's. Vibrant and all that junk wont work, DINO X works on 1 particular species of DINO's, and it is not guaranteed to work. Raising your nitrates and Phos. is the right way to go. Using a UV works good against DINO's, and works even better against the species of DINO's that goes into the water column. Blackouts will not fix the issue that caused the DINO outbreak, 9 out of 10 times they will come back. Done that and been there. Did a 3 day black out, yeah they cleared up, but a few months later they came right back as I did not correct the issue that caused them in the first place. I dosed SEACHEM PHOS and stump remover to raise my Nitrates and Phos. GHA started growing my my sump (which was a blessing since it stayed out of my display (yes, I got lucky). Took about a week to 2 weeks for the DINO's to be cleared up. Since then I watch my Nitrate and Phos levels, I do not allow them to get to low. Last thing, when dealing with DINO's, do not do water changes. You are on the right track.

I have had that exact problem you are having. Same color, bubbles, characteristics that you are dealing with. Honestly, I have had it in two tanks. Both times was after a lot of neglect. The only thing that cleared it up was multiple 25-50% water changes roughly every 3 - 5 days. In both cases this eradicated my issue. I am going to watch closely to see if raising nutrients actually does the trick as I find this to be a very far fetched solution. All the times I have heard people say that's the fix seem to me are people in an echo chamber saying the same things without actual experience with the issue. Just an FYI I have been in the reefing hobby for 17 years.

What I did was get my tank extremely dirty, watching parameters of course, but I fed heavily and avoided water changes unless my nutrients got too high as well as add macro algae to outcompete the dinos.

Raising the nutrients is worked the best for me, and whatever strains I've had and yeah the algae is a side effect, but that can be dealt with a little easier. Another benefit was that my corals loved it, although my tanks are mostly lps with a few montis here and there.
@cubetank7004
@cubetank7004 4 года назад
The problem there are different strains and they react to eradication methods differently. The first time I had it in my old 125 I tried blackouts, peroxide, bubble scrubbing, dosing bacteria etc. the only thing that worked was raising my ph with a constant kalk drip to 8.6 and hold for 4-5 days. Second time running my UV knocked it out pretty quickly on my 35 cube. Just recently on my 65 gallon (upgrade from 35) it was due to my nutrients dropping to undetectable levels. I just started feeding and dosing aminos heavily, knocked out the dino and my chateo stopped dying. Hope you get ahead of it.

@Desmo1
@Desmo1 4 года назад
You can add beneficial bacteria in your system which imo is what you need cause your tank isn't balanced, all you need to do is turn your UV and skimmer off for a few hours and then you can fire them back up after. Between that and water changes that's gonna be your biggest help, not quite sure why you would stop with the WC's since that's your main export of nutrients. If you could find a temporary home for a lot of your fish I'd do that until your tank balances out w/o having to feed. It seems you have both dino and cyano issues in your tank.
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 4 года назад
Not looking to export anything right now. Purposely raising nutrients as I mentioned in the video. Honestly not wanting to add any bacteria if I can avoid it I’ve had terrible luck with bottle bacteria’s during the life of this tank. I’ll tank slow progress and adjust from here. So far I’m seeing improvements... gotta remember there are a lot of variables you won’t know without it being your tank so hang back and enjoy the ride 😎👌🏾

Hey CJ I know you're a fanatic about your sand, I seem to have knocked the dinos out everywhere but the sand. I've heard stir the sand get the dinos in the water column so they can get zapped by UV. I've also heard don't touch the sand as you'll just spread them. As a man that has beat dinos what did you do with your sand in your fight?

I wonder... I've been screwing around with overflows and such for the past yeat. Want a mixed reef tank. I'm not into those kick a.. coral tanks. Too much to learn and way way beyond my budget. I ued to have a marine tank in the 90s.. everything has changed except the occasional use of a wet/dry filter. I'm curious.. if you lose your network connection, let's say for a few days, can you still control all aspects of your Apex system? Is the network just used for data logging, system equipment access, etc?
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 4 года назад
Dr Durso there is a way to access apex locally but you would still need to be on the same network. So if my router died I’d be out of luck. Older apexes had control panels included. Newer ones do not but you can add one. Great question 👌🏾

Also letting your live rock dry out and all microbes die off you need to add all those bacteria reintroduced, you can naturally grow nitrifying bacteria in the cycle but all the other beneficial bacteria died off and will need to be introduced again or you are going to keep this completely unnecessary lengthy battle to a stable, mature tank going. Stability equals biodiversity which equals introducing lots of different forms of microbes.
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 4 года назад
Yea I agree... I’ve introduced additional live rock in the rear of the tank for this reason. I did this earlier on but may do it again with diff rock rubble. I wasn’t concerned with UV killing bacteria on the rock.. mine was purely related to me adding bottle bacteria to the water column it would need time to reproduce in the tank which would require turning off the UV for a period of time. Great points and I’ll be adding biodiversity as time goes thru live rock and less from bottle bacteria.
@purefkingmagic2391
@purefkingmagic2391 4 года назад
The issue with live rock and rubble is that the bacteria present is mostly nitrifying bacteria not heterotrophic bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria needs a sugar carbon source to feed and multiply and since live rock is usually kept water with ammonia source only the other types of bacteria die off. Also heterotrophic bacteria should be introduced on a regular basis, monthly or so once established to ensure colony thrives due to older bacteria dying off and being exported by skimmer. Also heterotrophic bacteria has like 20-40x's the reproductive rate that nitrifying bacteria which is what makes it so usefully in competing with nuisance organisms like dinoflagellates, it is capable of out breeding and outcompeting food sources, hence the bacteria bloom if overdosed or if too much carbon source is introduced to rapidly. Vibrant works so well because it contains heterotrophic bacteria blend, beneficial probiotic bacteria, a carbon source- vinager, and amino acids which feed corals and other microbes that produce waste that the bacteria strains need to survive. Reef2reef has a lot of good articles on dinoflagellates and identifying which strands and treatments, also dr. Tim havonec has tons of scientifically published studies done on all major strands of bacterias and there effects that I would check out, he is who discovered a lot of the individual marine bacterias and what exactly they do and don't do.
