Season 2, episode 20 is here. Dominic, Connor, and Mark have an awesome conversation with everyone's favorite holographic crooner, James Darren - Vic Fontaine of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
This absolute legend has lived a life... South Philly, over 60 years of marriage, signing a studio deal. Touring. Acting. Being close friends & colleagues with all the greats. Vegas, baby, Vegas. TV star. Movie star. Director. And - of course... Star Trek. This conversation could have gone on all day and still be great.
Our beloved Erica LaRose is away today, but she will be back soon. Wash is out of uniform again, but looking good. We get some fan questions in, play a round of Star Trek Trivia, and we subject James to being "Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.” Get ready to have a laugh.

When I was in my 20’s, I worked for a company in Beverly Hills. This job paid us weekly so I had to go to the nearby bank and stand in long lines to deposit my check. One day James Darren was in my line!! He was drop dead gorgeous! I loved the Gidget movies he did and now I was next to him! I wanted his autograph so bad! No one else seemed to notice him or just left him alone so I did as well. He had to be in his 40’s and still smoking hot. He was there alone, quietly just doing his banking like the rest of us and seemed like a really nice guy. To this day when I think about that encounter my heart melts .. he was that handsome!

He performed at the shell at the Michigan State Fair in the sixties, and he was giving out autographs backstage. I had my little sister with me and she was being crushed by the throng at the gate, so I had her jump onto my back and hold on tight. Jimmy saw that and had security take us forward into the gate where he gave us a smile and his autograph. A treasured memory..

Vic Fontaine kinda became my favorite character on DS9. I was certainly happiest to see him appear, out of anyone. When they let him basically live in the holosuites and be active all the time, that made me super happy. He was just such a joyous, charismatic character, and a really good guy. I haven't watched the video yet, but just wanted to go ahead and say that.
@carstenaltena
@carstenaltena Год назад
Same here. I love how he's aware that he's a hologram and being cool with that, great writing and great acting. Looks like James' personality isn't that much different to Vic's, it's everybody's favorite uncle. Oh, and I love crooners so that helps too!
@nicholassmith7984
@nicholassmith7984 Год назад
I wasn't a huge fan, only because he was emblematic of a peve of mine in Star Trek: how human-centric everything is. Even characters who have no connection to human culture (let alone 20th Century North American culture,) seem to have much more interest in it than in their own; something that is almost never reciprocated by human characters (Sisko being the only example I can think of.) I know there are practical and bugetary reasons for this, but it would be enriching to at least make an effort, even if only in dialog.
@carstenaltena
@carstenaltena Год назад
@@nicholassmith7984 To be fair, Picard was very interested in various cultures. And what about Dax who loves Klingon culture?
@Billkwando
@Billkwando Год назад
@@nicholassmith7984 Everyone finds everyone else's culture more interesting than their own, because they're typically already familiar with their own culture. I find it odd that you don't think the show's humans reciprocate on the whole cultural interest thing, when the whole premise of Star Trek (as you've cited Trek as a whole), is to seek out new life and new civilizations. If said exploration somehow ends up being a metaphor for some human problem or conundrum, well....that's just how Roddenberry built it. It seems like your complaint has very little, if nothing at all, to do with Vic Fontaine, other than perhaps to ponder, "Why do aliens like lounge singers?" Is this a recurring complaint that you always post on these episodes, perhaps until they agree to do an interview with the Crystalline Entity?
@Chalor.
@Chalor. Год назад
@@Billkwando Hahaha, I _love_ your comment man! Absolutely agree, cause that comment you were replying to is ridiculous...and it didn't quite make sense. So yeah, we just have to conclude exactly what Nicholas's specific beef is...other than Trek needed to be more SJW/radically left and anti-American/Western culture. And of course they have to point out they have no problem with Sisko 🙄. Virtue signaling (secretly rrrrrracist) alert, woop woop!

Our Italian grandmothers kept us out of the most trouble but it always felt like the most trouble you could be in. Amazing how they saved us from ourselves to be who we became....

Vic Fontaine - a hologram with a heart. Loved "Gidget," "Time Tunnel," and especially Mr. Darren as Vic Fontaine in "Deep Space Nine."

I recommend watching ‘It's Only a Paper Moon’ after that viewing that great interview with James Darren. Vic Fontaine is a very special character in the Star Trek world.

Loved his DS9 character but knew very little about the actor. What a great storyteller James Darren is. This interview was a real hoot. Enjoyed it more than I anticipated.

Love the podcast and love the enthusiasm, so I say this with love and respect - Dominic, please stop interrupting the guests. Your excitement is understandable, but you do have a habit of cutting people off, or finishing their sentences for them. This is a bad habit that I too am guilty of, so I understand it's not coming from a negative place. I say this as a fan of the podcast, and only to see it get even better. One thing that works for me, in the right setting, is keeping a notepad to hand, so I don't forget all the little comments and tangents the other person sparks in my mind. Thank you for putting all of this together.

I saw you liked my comment, which means so much to me personally (re-watching Enterprise right now, season 4 is still golden televison!) and I have to say, in recent episodes, Dominic - your transformation is remarkable. Totally get how hard it is when talking to someone who sparks so much in the way of excitement and ideas, not to want to dive in with my own thoughts. The restraint, respect and mature growth you've shown is truly remarkable and demonstrates what an incredible individual (and actor!) you are. Again, thank you for putting this podcast together - you and Connor are the perfect pair to run a show like this. x

This was the best show yet! I have been a fan of James Darren for as long as I can remember and could listen to him tell his stories all night. He made Vic Fontaine more than a holodeck character and was a great addition to DS9. The Time Tunnel wasn't on TV very long but I really liked that show and T J Hooker also. Thanks guys this episode was a lot of fun.

PS you should have given Jimmy a bottle of Jack Daniel's. That was Frank's fave.
