This school bus to tiny house renovation has been the most rewarding project I've done to date and it feels awesome to have momentum on my side during this project. In this video I show you every step of the process for how to build a functional, versatile bedroom for your school bus to RV / Tiny house conversion. Storage is so important when it comes to tiny living and I've crammed as much utility out of the platform bed I wanted to do as possible. If you want to take on a school bus conversion follow along and I'll show you all my success and failures on Modern Builds! :)

You’ll need to make some holes under your mattress to let it breathe. In skoolies and van builds they can get moldy. A lot of builders forget to do that and then it ends up in a “I wish knew before I built...”/“What I would change...”/“One thing I hate video...” video after everything is done.

Sorry Mike, love your work but on builds like this, you need to utilise every inch of space for hidden storage and all that space underneath hasn’t been used. Maybe should have made the whole frame on a heavy duty lift up hinge with some storage bins underneath etc.

I someone agree. Not sure how I would have done it. Perhaps a Murphy bed style in the middle and when you flip it up, you have two couches on the sides with a coffee table in the middle w/storage. You could have storage under the seat cushions of the two couches. That’s just the first idea. I know things are tough when you diy so I’m not going to down what my boy did. An idea I’ve been knocking around in my head for a while is to use some “drawers” to take advantage of the awkward under bed area. My thought was to make boxes that will fit that have wheels or a rail but can be taken right out, then link them with a hook, so you can push them right back into the space and get them out again. Did any of that make sense?

You'd probably have to disconnect each box as they are pulled out, because he doesn't have the room to pull it straight out at once. That's because the bathroom is in the way. But I'm sure there is a creative solution to fix that and not waste all the space underneath.

Idk if it is different in Amerika but thats a mettal plate over the outlet but doesnt it have to be grounded so you wont get elektrocuted if there is something wrong

I never post negs but my wife was laughing about how worked up I was getting about the metal outlet covers. On a helpful note you can just get longer screws to attach the outlet to the box 😂.
@mikel9567
@mikel9567 4 года назад
Normally you would be correct, but his covers weren't attached to the outlet or the box like standard covers. His were attached directly to the wall via the 4 corner screws. If that plate were to become energized, you got much bigger problems to worry about. Metal outlet are sold here in the US.
@G04C4
@G04C4 4 года назад
I don’t know why he didn’t just move the outlet box out. For home construction you leave room for sheeting (dry wall). This isn’t different? Or is it? Am I being punked? Ashton come on out?

Man this bit did annoy me a little a lot of effort when into making a cover that he even said wouldn't always be practical. I would of just cut some ply offcuts up and used them as spacers to bring the whole socket out a bit 🤷‍♂️

I was building a skoolie a few years ago and ended up giving up and selling it because I couldn't get anyone to insure it. Would you mind giving us a peak behind the curtain at your experience with registration, inspection, and insurance? I'm very curious how you overcame the roadblocks that ended up being the nail in the coffin for me.

@@scorpio6587 That seems quite pointless to build it in a bus if you can't drive it anywhere lol. Also he said in the first episode he made sure the engine works and will last so pretty sure he plans to move it.

This whole bed setup is a massive waste of space. You could have set it sideways and gave yourself a ton of extra space for other things.

Cricket101382 did you see the space at the front end of the bus? There’s so much room it’s a school bus. He basically just used the last 4 rows for the bed

Not on the side, because the bus wheels are there. However, under normal circumstances, yes. Very good idea.

Or just make those sections individual panels, instead of one large panel on the front. That way he wouldn't have to move the whole large piece to get into the wheel well area, and would be a great place to store shoes.

Small Suggestion : Instead of wiping the silicon , use the masking tape on the boards leaving an inch or two gap for the silicon then peeling off the masking tape once you are done Ceiling the silicon before it dries ... then even the silicon will look neat 👌🏻👌🏻

couple comments you should probably have some sort of holder for the bed a, it'll get really annoying to have to make sure your sheets dont get caught whenever you open those side storage trapdoors plus and this goes with part b, remember its a bus its gonna be moving and bouncing around especially the back its bouncy af, that beds gonna slide lamps get knocked over, and you should have a more secure method of stopping that end door from opening i dont think magnets will be strong enough but c, this looks awesome i do really like the indented plugs they are kinda satisfying in a weird way, plus, i bet there are some weird outlet standoffs on amazon if need be, the giant back window is gonna be so nice it looks sick, and those colors are fucking fantastic i love them so much incredible choice they really accent the aesthetic of the bus i cant wait to see more thanks for keeping us updated and interested in this project, stay safe with everything going on lots of love and good luck homie :)
