@@pauldalnoky6055 Here's a few: hits for Three Dog Night ("An Old Fashioned Love Song", "The Family of Man" and "Out in the Country"), Helen Reddy ("You and Me Against the World"), and the Carpenters, most notably "Rainy Days and Mondays", "I Won't Last a Day Without You", and "We've Only Just Begun", originally a song for a Crocker National Bank television commercial featuring newlyweds, and which has since become a cover-band standard and de rigueur for weddings "Evergreen" co-wrote with Barbra Streisand. and more....
Wow! What a treat to see King Harvest live singing “Dancing in the Moonlight”. Fantastic song and great performance by the band. Thank you very much for posting it.
After seeing these Midnight Special episodes with Paul Williams as host, I didn't realize how many well-crafted songs he had wrote. When I was a kid, he was overexposed on TV and I found him annoying. 😂
I remember watching The Midnight Special watching it every Friday night. I never knew how I would miss so many things from the past. The midnight Special Wolf Man Jack I really miss it all. I grew up listening to Paul, Rita and Kris but I think all of my favorite singers and bands was on the show. It makes me feel sad to be honest I miss my life being young and free.
Damn what happened to all the incredibly talented songwriters like Paul Williams, Kris Kristofferson, Jimmy Webb, etc? Pop/rock songwriters now churn out mostly assembly line garbage for product. Sad shame.
Seventies had so many beautiful, classy, talented female singers with voices like songbirds. No decade before or since could touch them. Rita Coolidge, Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton John, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Karen Carpenter. No auto tuned vocals, no repetitive and perverted lyrics, no slutty outfits and behavior.
I'm here for ELO. Dancing in the Moonlight was one of my favourite songs though. Everything else is just added bonus. I love seeing polite crowds in nice clothes without their faces attached to phones enjoying quality music and entertainment. Thank you Midnight Special!
Another good line up, Kristofferson's Loving Her is So Good. Love Commander Cody, this is the 1st time I've seen them. Early ELO, and as Paul Williams predicted we did get a lot more from them. It was the first time I've heard any other song but Dancing by The Moonlight by King Harvest, again if you only listen to golden oldies radio, you could believe they only made 1 song, same with Brewer and Shipley. Rita Coolidge, smooth as butter milk. Next week's lineup looks just as enticing.
I feel the same way. And to think we had this show and American Bandstand, Soul Train on Saturday afternoons and SNL live back when it was funny and had great music as well. There was plenty of music on TV back then. Thank God for RU-vid so I can see this again. Now there’s nothing.
The Monkees (with the late Davy Jones on vocals) did "Someday Man" (45 stereo single only) which was the flip B side of "Listen To The Band" (the late Mike Nesmith on vocals from 1969 "Present Micky, Davy & Mike"). King Harvest follow up "A Little Bit Like Magic" went to # 91 (Billboard Hot 100) in late May of 1973 & released only as a 45 stereo single. The late Canadian singer Jesse Winchester did the original "Yankee Lady" from his 1970 self-titled Ampex album. The Brewer & Shipley's remake is on 1973 "Rural Space" album (their 4th & final album for Kama Sutra) because the duo went to Capitol Records in 1974.
I don't know about others but I'm enjoying these chapters a lot and I'm hoping that you're also enjoying the greatest music ever. These are treasures. Thanks to Midnight Special channel. As a kid in my country, I used to wait until almost midnight to watch the program and listen to the music without understanding the language, now in my 50's I get all the conversations and songs and enjoy it even more. This music doesn't even compare with the rubbish produce these days.
The first 8-track I ever owned was a gift of Kris’s debut album ‘Kristofferson’ in 1971 from my dad. I don’t know why(maybe my pop bought for himself and didn’t like it) but at 9 years of age I had never heard anything like his songs before. I realize now that album was formative to my personal tastes. Also, this year (1973) he starred in one of my favorite movies-Peckinpah’s ‘Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.’ A film with a strange release history, I have seen (in 4 different edits) probably about 100 times and it hypnotizes me (in each of the versions) like few works of cinema ever have. Thank you Mr Kristofferson.
Saw Kris K. perform @ 80yrs young, one of the best shows I’ve seen (have been to many). He sang~played acoustic unaccompanied for 1 1/2hrs standing, no drink of water~break. Did 30 songs that landed directly into my heart, what a fantastic storyteller and hot! Love ELO’s song, had forgot about it. Great show 🥰
@@KittyGrizGriz I was, like 10 ,11 years old, and as many homes, albums seemed to just appear, and that was the case with Kristofferson's albums. I would sit and listen to songs like, Sunday morning coming down, not sure what they were about, but one thing was certain, he is one of the artists that has been a constant throughout my life. His songs come from his soul. 👍✌️
It was surprising that Kristofferson didn’t perform “Why Me” from his current album at the time “Jesus Was A Capricorn” but did sing “Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight” which was never released as a single while “Why Me” was released in March of 1973 and spent 38 weeks on the Hot 100 and was still climbing the chart when this show aired. And he and Rita did perform a song from their duet album “Full Moon” which wouldn’t be released until September of 1973. Still it was nice to see them perform together.
Learn something knew every day. I did not know that Paul Williams wrote "Someday Man". I only knew this song from the Monkees but never thought about who wrote it.
Watching these makes me think about the shortness of life. Its quite crazy thinking many people spend their lives saving so they can go into the best rest home lol.
Thank you for uploading this and all the memories which go with it. Where were you in June 1973? For me it was the summer between the 3rd and 4th grade and I was pretty much glued to whatever music was on the radio, especially American Top 40 on Sunday mornings. The USA was in a difficult time between pulling out of the totally unjustified Vietnam conflict, and exposing our dirty crook President, and a lot of emotional insecurity and attempts at healing filtered through to the music scene. We were also on the brink of the superficial escapist disco era - oh no! ;-)
Holy crap, I couldn’t have said it better! Was the summer between 3rd and 4th grade for me as well. My family had just moved into a house that my dad built on the lake in the country. Spent my childhood fishing, swimming, skiing, and riding dirt bikes. Summer vacation started on Memorial Day and ended until Labor day, and seemed to last forever! This music was the soundtrack of my youth. Plus Elton John, Eagles, Chicago, Rod Stewart, etc. All could be found for a dime on the jukebox at the campground rec room up the road. Would take our allowance and walk barefoot up the road to play pinball, buy candy, and play their jukebox. Damn those were beautiful, simpler times! Wish there was a way to go back in time and warn the childhood me to appreciate and savor every minute, cause it goes so fast.
I was between 7th and8th grade - a very formative time for me - smoked too much weed but Really enjoyed the music of that era - I think it sounds even better now !
I would have been in the summer between fourth and fifth grade. Loved THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. I think I saw just about all these episodes until the show really decayed. It became music videos (which was okay but I was interested in seeing people really play) and eventually a few people sitting around in armchairs just rapping about stuff. Horrendously boring.
I saw Kris when he was 80yrs young, he had me in a trance & sang 30 songs that landed directly into my heart. Been to tons of shows & Kris K. is @ the tippy top 😊
Oh you don’t even know how happy it makes me feel to have found this! My youth….right here! And My favorite Happy song of ALL time, “Dancin in the Moonlight”! Seeing adorable Doc with his wonderfully unique, cool voice and all of you talented guys in the band. I have chills from head to toe, a smile from ear to ear and such a teary eyed wonderful feeling in my heart. They do Not make music nor beautiful times like these times we lived in the 70’s. My heart is Happy and would be even Happier if I could turn back time. Thank you for sharing this and allowing me to do that for a while with the wonderful music of my youth.❤️
I'm interested in Kris and Rita at this stage if their careers. I only know some of their stuff from a bit later, and of course Kris with Streisand in A Star is Born.
I was not disappointed. Kris and Rita did great, as well as ELO (great original tune), Commander Cody, and all the rest! Thanks so much, Midnight Special!💜
Stephanie, Kris K. solo was one of the very best concerts I’ve seen (been to many). He played solo acoustic~sang for 1 1/2 hours @ 80yrs young. Felt the audience disappeared & he was singing directly to me, Omg, he’s a masterful story weaver, I was in love 🥰
So that's the guy who did 'Dancin' In The Moonlight'? The Mignight Special..Killer show. So this show is the 'music history encyclopedia' show. Forget about the books...
Paul Williams? Man, I forgot all about him! Didn’t he play “Little Enos Burdett” in Smokey & the Bandit back in the day? I never really thought of him as a singer. He was talented, but a singer? LOVED seeing the oh-so-HOT Kristofferson again! What a loss his death is. ❤️🙏🏼❤
Paul is/was a great songwriter but ugh, I hope this is the last time he hosts the show. I'd much rather hear the others sing his songs. It's awful to listen to him sing songs that Karen Carpenter sang.
Nope, Paul hosted at least 3 more times after this including when he introduced to the world his "new song" "You And Me Against The World" (with a FULL string section) on that Midnight Special appearance (Righteous Brothers were on this show). How is it "awful" listing to sing songs HE WROTE???? The Carpenters themselves would disagree with you, as Paul would often come by their recording sessions and sing with them. They were friends. Logically, your words don't "compute". The best person to sing a "Paul Williams song" IS Paul Williams. Happy 83rd Birthday Paul
I love to sing. I've been singing all my life - probably from before you were born. I recently recorded myself singing. I can't listen to it. Ugh. There's a reason some songwriters don't sing and they know it. It's not a tragedy.
What you claim is a totally SUBJECTIVE statement. "I" think Paul's voice is excellent and I'd rather here him sing his songs than anyone else. WHY did he release over 5 albums (which people bought)? WHY did he appear of the Tonight Show over 30 times SINGING if people didn't like his voice? WHY did he appear in concert FOR YEARS around the world? (I saw him at U.C. Berkeley and he received a standing ovation) Sorry, but the world does not revolve around YOU. Music is ART. Your rude comments toward him are YOURS alone. Paul's is a millionaire and doesn't need "your approval". You should be ashamed in your attempts to insult him. While you're sitting at home insulting him, he is out making a POSITIVE difference in people's lives. Some how I think he will manage to survive without your approval. May I suggest for you Americal Idol???? THEY like things "perfect"
I never really understood the popularity of Paul Williams. He is a brilliant songwriter I'll give him that but as a singer there's something almost sad about it. Yet he was beyond popular and on almost every kind of television you can imagine for close to 10 years I think he did over a hundred spots on The Tonight show. I've heard him interviewed recently and apparently he was coked out the entire time, I go back and watch these things now and it's like I still don't know why it's popular but it's much funnier. And yes of course I can't wait to see this
Maybe because he wrote such great songs, and was generally likeable. I mean, I was a kid, so I don't know for sure. He did have a sad quality in his voice. But, like you, I look forward to this, too! ✌️
@@StephanieJeanne yes there was definitely a sad quality to Paul. But if you ever seen any of his Tonight show clips they're just laughing and couldn't be any happier. There were a lot of singing artists at this time who I always thought were somewhat mediocre and yet were huge stars. If you ever run across any of his interviews done over the last few years they're fascinating
I saw Bill Kirchen from Commander. Cody play countless bars and weddings in the DC area in the 90s. And early aughts. Master of the Telecaster, he never disappointed.
Can anyone tell me who the bass player is with Brewer & Shipley? The camera focuses on the lead guitar player for the most part, but it’s the bass player that stole the show!
