Ep. 23 - Buildings, Language, and Running out of Time!
Bruce and Kara discuss societal conversations around what it means to be autistic and the need for change to existing narratives; moving from stereotypes to getting curious about others' lived experiences; and autistic culture and community as a protective factor. Kara also reflects on time blindness and the cognitive effort needed when we don't have structure.

I just listened to the podcast during my morning walk, thank you for the company! :) Regarding time blindness I think I might have that as I am very bad at estimating how long things will take me to do. My rule of thumb is: whatever time I think I need, multiply that by 2.5 Yes, I do a lot of math in my head!

A really interesting discussion. Thank you for always giving us so much to think about. I'm not at all surprised that autistic physicians emerge from their extensive education and training program with the feeling that their autism is a disease or defect. That's the medial model in a nutshell - that everything that deviates from "normal," whether it's autism or cholesterol level, is a disease that needs to be cured or treated. Physicians spend years steeped in this reductive way of thinking. That some physicians get through this training and retain their view that autism is a difference rather than a disease is what's remarkable.

This is a really good conversation, as a woman who is likely autistic, I'm learning so much from your videos. Thanks!

"Autos" in Greek means "self", and is the root for both "autism" and "automatic". As for whether a word that breaks down to "selfism" is the best choice for a word for the condition: 1) There tend to be communication barriers between the autistic individual and society (ranging from language delay to interpreting everything differently), so isolation is something of a default state, whether desired or not. 2) Focus on a special interest can cause us to tune out everything outside the bubble containing us and the object of interest. 3) Overwhelm can cause us to fail to process sensory data coming from the outside world. 4) Especially in low-masking presentations, we lack the allistic herd instinct and are more likely to be chased by an angry mob than to participate in one. As to whether "self absorbtion" accurately describes autism, *humans* tend to be self-absorbed and not to realize it. Even the allistic herd instinct tends to come from a place of "what will people think of me if I don't participate?" Communication isolation will tend to throw up barriers to overcoming this issue, so "autistic people are self-centered" is likely technically true but fairly uninteresting.

Yes, the value of curiosity! Thank you. In my opinion, the value of curiosity is on the lower rungs in our world. Maybe its an American thing, but inquiry and curiosity have been replaced with knowledge as to produce and profit. Perhaps, AI can help with certain challenges ND’s may face. For example, I have been able to communicate across a few ideas in writing form to entities and organizations that could benefit from them. I was able to tap into my curiosity and then produce a writing that was easily digestible for the NT reader. Funnily enough, I tend not to be so focused on whether others can understand what I am trying to express, instead focusing on where curiosity, open mindedness and unknowing leads to next.
