Thanks Marc, Devil's lake is another one of those beautiful lakes in the west. I love that crystal clear light blue green water. Your new blue yak seems to travel faster over the water but is also much more twitchy than your Necky. It looks like you have to use more thigh work to maintain balance and stability. That's the issue I had. The whole area is beautiful. Kayaking down the river in the middle of Bend world have been neat to view as well. Those parks along the river looked really nice... Great video adventure, for sure. Gord
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 года назад
Thanks Gord! "Twitchy" isn't necessarily a bad thing in a kayak, actually. Using thigh and hip pressure helps to maneuver effectively, especially in a longer boat. I'm quickly growing accustomed to it, and it's teaching me better technique, too.

Beautifully done video of a very special place. Congrats on the new kayak. Please share more of your thoughts on Kayaking with a skeg vs moveable rudder. Thanks in advance.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 года назад
Thanks Jim! A rudder is of course brain-dead simple: want to move right, push your right foot. Want to move left, push your left foot. A skeg takes a bit more thought. Taking for example for a moment a 90-degree crosswind to the boat, that wind is either going to move the bow downwind faster, or move the stern downwind faster. The skeg, however, allows you to anchor the stern in the water more than the bow. The trick is figuring out just how far to lower the skeg, to provide just the right amount of resistance to keep the boat tracking on a straight line. Here's a RU-vid video that explains it far better than I ever could: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NgQEhYYSdM8.html

Thank you as always! In the end, we've stuck together fore a few more weeks but this week (in real time) will be our last for a while because I'm continuing eastward into the heat wave, whereas they're retreating south to some cooler temps at higher elevation. We'll reconnect for a few days in Texas this fall, if not before. We had only planned to caravan together for a few weeks, but it turned out to be a full three months. As Mrs GA is out of country for a few months it'll be just Zoe and me for a while, so our parting ways with Homie at Large is rather bittersweet.

Many thanks for the Bend primer. We'll be there for four days next week after picking up our new travel trailer in Pendleton. I had completely forgotten about the last Blockbuster there. We're loving our new Eddyline Caribbean 12 FS kayaks. Our pleasure! And enjoy that new TT. FYI there's a convenient dump station at the Chevron station next to Blockbuster, so you can knock out two birds with one stone, although it's admittedly tricky exiting that dump with anything longer than our fiver. Thanks so much, and you too! I'm absolutely loving that boat, and will probably get it out somewhere in Glacier National Park this weekend to get more accustomed to a skeg boat after so many years of cheating with a rudder. It was a screaming deal, but one thing that had me bummed is that the prior owner had managed to get black scuff marks all over the lower half of the hull. However, I discovered last night that a magic eraser eliminates them entirely. She's looking brand new now!
@jdtravelers1361
@jdtravelers1361 2 года назад
@@GrandAdventure Been there..😁My Skylark is the same colors as yours. I have been to some manmade reservoirs where they used larger riprap stones on the shoreline. Lots of scratches. 400 grit sandpaper gets the deep ones out and rubbing compound for the light ones and scuffs. I need to try the magic eraser on the scuff marks. I have seen some people wax the hull like a surfboard.... I have been a canoe guy all my life, so I do not have much experience but I have been loving this boat. We are fulltimers like you in an ORV 250RDS and now I look for water when choosing where to go. Love LTVA in Yuma, several opportunities within 5 to 15 minute drives and lots of more experienced kayakers that stay here to learn from and paddle with. Safe travels sir..
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 года назад
@@jdtravelers1361 same to you! I'd thought about the rubbing compound, but for what I've got the magic eraser is doing the trick with much less impact upon the surface finish of the ABS. Good to know, however, that's working for you on the deeper ones. I'll definitely need to be more careful with the Eddyline than I've been with that rotomolded Necky. Finally, ORV makes some excellent product. We're hoping to get the 'yak out onto the water tomorrow somewhere in Glacier NP.

Thanks J! LOL at the batteries comment, for years ago on an 8-day paddle down the Green River through Canyonlands I kept a small battery bank in the dry hold, then ran a cable to a flexible solar panel strapped to the aft deck. Then I could use that battery bank at night to recharge cameras, GPS, etc. And that overhead lake drone shot of the dog retrieving the frisbee for the guy laying on the paddleboard just might be one of my favorite drone shots ever. Was just in the right place at the right moment.

Good to hear from you Tom! Nice boat, BTW. Honestly, when traveling with that rack system I hardly even notice that it's there. We actually did a video specifically on that setup and the thought process behind it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N01Jhum2BTE.html. I honestly don't know how you do it Marc. I have paddled probably close to a 1000 miles, trolled about with a trolling motor for another 1000 miles, all in sit on top kayaks. I once in Wyoming tried a sit inside kayak and tried a canoe in Maryland and I honestly did not know what to do with myself. I just felt naked and exposed, lol. To sit in something that can flip would be of grave concern to me, but then again I paddle here in Florida surrounded by 8-12 ft alligators and carry all my camera gear so I can't really afford to flip. I saw you post this on your FB a few months ago. Happy that you have options now but still... I honestly don't know how one could steer with their thighs. Hmmm
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure Год назад
It's remarkably easier, MTL. If you spent one full day in a properly fitted touring kayak, with the proper guidance, I strongly believe that you'd feel differently. The boat becomes an extension of your body. You don't feel like you're sitting on it or in it, you feel like you're wearing it. In 20 years I've flipped a kayak precisely once, and that was only because I did something really, really stupid where the consequences of my stupidity were readily foreseeable. And if that unthinkable event happens, if you don't know how to roll the boat (I don't) you simply pull the handle on the spray skirt if you're wearing one, and swim out. Steering is accomplished not only with your body positioning, but predominately from your style of stroke. A vertical reaching stroke for forward propulsion, or a wide sweeping stroke to turn. Yes there are subtleties, and none of that is necessary if you're paddling a rudder boat. After many years with the latter, this new boat is a skeg boat, which forced me to clean up my paddling technique and also learn how to properly trim the skeg in different wind directions. As for the camera gear, anything not waterproof goes in a dry bag whether I'm in a sit in, sit in top, or a canoe.

Great episode Marc! Beautiful videos as always. I camped at Lava Lake a few years ago. Love the area and can’t wait to get back. Your episodes are an inspiration!

Thank you Duke! Comments like yours motivate us to keep going.Yup, we looked at Lava Lake after dropping our fiver at the Sno Park, as part of our search for a more scenic location. However, although a beautiful place it was just too forested for our solar and Starlink.
