I am from Creole and grew up a few miles from Rutherford Beach. Over night we lost our entire town. I never found my home, and most came back to a pile of bricks or empty piers. Generations of family lived next door to each other, Sunday dinners at Grandma’s house, sitting on the porch swing during a cool evening breeze, family crawfish boils, Friday night football games, riding on the beach, duck hunting and fishing, boat riding and tubing, fresh vegetables from the garden, fresh seafood, getting together to pray the Rosary for someone or having a benefit for them, the pageants had a packed auditorium and Fur & Wildlife Festivals with your whole family when the streets of Cameron were lined with people cooking and dancing to Cajun/French music. You could walk down the street with a beer, a shotgun, a fried shrimp on a stick, and a neck full of parade beads. Those of us that grew up south of the Gibstown Bridge will never fill that hole in our hearts. We try to build make shift camps to be able to spend a little time there but the restrictions have become so tedious and expensive which each storm and most people just can’t afford it. Rita was overshadowed by Katrina and we never get the coverage New Orleans and Florida get but their communities get rebuilt, ours don’t! So thank you so much for documenting our lost community❤❤❤
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure Год назад
Oh my gosh, Brandi! Your tale is both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Cameron Parish sounds like Nirvana to me before Rita, and its even more disheartening to see it in the state it's in now knowing what it was like before. May the residents find the strength to return the area to what it once was.

Thank you for posting this. We used to go to our friend's camp, all the time, on the beach. There was a thriving little community there. I forget which hurricane it was, but it wiped them out, to the foundations. I think all that's left of the camp is the steel table' cemented into a block, where we used to clean ducks in the winter and sort seafood in the summer.

Ahhh.....you found a good one!!!! My husband, Mike and I are traveling in a Class A Motorhome, Last winter, we went to Rutherford Beach and boondocked for 2 and a half weeks. It was wonderful! Time seemed to stand still, even though we would see the sun come up in the east, track overhead until it set in the west, in beautiful sunsets. Commercial fishermen were dragging their nets full of fish back to their ports. The offshore oil rigs were silhouetted against the horizon. One of the campers, a single man, would come out of his RV with a bagpipe, and play on the beach, as the sun set. Such a beautiful treasure to find! We are going back when we find ourselves in that region again! We enjoyed your video, remembering how much we loved our stay here! Thank you!

What a sweet boondocking spot! I like the idea about the trash bags and the dumpsters. No excuse for not helping out. Two more batteries??? You keep adding batteries, your’re going to need to tow an extra trailer! 😉 We finally added a solar panel onto our rig. That along with our portable OKMO power pack allowed us recently to easily go ten days without having to run our generator. It’s nice to wake up in the morning and have a cup of expresso without having to get out and start the generator! Nice to see some boondocking again. Thank you, Ram 👍🏼👍🏾

It was nice to HAVE some boondocking again. Initial thoughts are to stay in the west in 2023 to maximize boondocking, and not have to spend 50% of our season in campgrounds as we had to in 2022 by going east. Congrats on the solar! It sure is nice (and quiet) to have. And we ended up adding those two more batteries when we got back to Utah ru-vid.comLLjuehGx_d4 which actually makes 6 total, not 5 like we said in this video.

Guido, I want to thank you for mentioning the incredibly devastating wind damage from Laura and Delta. This wind damage didn't have the media coverage that water damage has following hurricanes, and your mentioning the continued remnants brings that to light. I grew up in Lake Charles, and have many fond memories of visiting Rutherford Beach and fishing from Cameron. Although I no longer live there, it is my home and my heart feels home there. (I can only hope that you tried the local cajun favorite boudin in Lake Charles, as there are many wonderful spots.) ... You and Zoe are documenting my future travels. Cheers from Yuma! See you out there!
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure Год назад
Thanks so much! As a native your comment means that much more to us. It's hard to miss the wind damage around Cameron, it's the proverbial elephant in the room. What we found so heartbreaking is that two years after the storm, it's pretty obvious that this area will never recover. People there simply lack the resources or rationale to rebuild. I've long been fascinated by the Louisiana bayou country, and as you may have guessed from my Pecan Island reference in the video I truly enjoy the show Swamp People and similar offerings. Aside from one quick visit nearly 30 years ago this was my first experience, and it won't be my last. As for the boudin, my (apparently mistaken) understanding was that it's blood sausage, and I wasn't feeling that adventurous. I've since been told that there are different types of boudin, some of which are blood sausage and some of which are not. Knowing that now, I'll explore it more carefully next time. But that seafood boil was the best I've ever had!

Marc, you would be very surprised to see that Amish folk are very well travelled people. Here in Florida it is not uncommon for a bus full of them to swim in the ocean or the gulf fully clothed in traditional garments and everything. I also saw a ton of them enjoying offroading excursions in mountain peaks of Colorado on top of Imogene, Black Bear Pass, Engineer Pass and all those peaks. Telling you man, I am on to their tricks! I saw that lamborghini motor hidden in the buggy compartment! In all seriousness though, I am finally caught up to all your videos. Sorry could not follow along as you published them. Had one hell of a year with home repairs, hurricanes, clean up, trips to and from and basically bothers of life that made my queue of youtube videos stretch for miles. I was doing my best to juggle all that. While all my trip videos and those I chose not to film in 2022 season have long been addressed, I spent a ton of time this year and stretching into next uploading google street view of off roading and hiking trails in Utah and Colorado from my 2021 trip. I umm... severely underestimated just how much of a hassle that was going to be. 90 days of recording 360 degree videos non stop generated a whopping 16 terabytes of google street view content that has to be processed and uploaded but at least for all the effort (which at this point is largely sunken cost fallacy and I simply refuse to give up) will benefit people for years to come. When done (hopefully by end of March 2023) I would have uploaded 4,000 miles worth of google street view stuff. Colorado is done and google already published most of it. I am now 10% into Utah stuff.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure Год назад
Wow, that's one massive project! It's a shame that most who will benefit from it will never realize the effort that you needed to put into it, but they'll appreciate the benefit nevertheless. Thank you so much for doing that. Some of those projects are as you describe -- you underestimate what it'll take, but still refuse to give up on it. As for the Amish, there was a time that I would've been shocked at how much they travel. After spending an evening with an Amish family in Indiana this year, however, I now understand. There's a surprising amount of wanderlust hidden within that community, and they find a way to make it work and still comply with their church's values and principles.

I assume you knew what that yellow jeep was saying to you with the flashing lights... Right ! Well for anyone that might not now... that almost always means either a cop if up ahead and or a issue with your truck are car is noticed, stop and see what's up or it means your lights are on ... some even today do not realize that many new cars and trucks have full time running lights that are often left on... anyway mostly in Cajun country is means theirs a cop ahead be extra careful...

Spent some time down that way in May of 2021. We stayed at Cajun Palms RV Resort. Next time you are down that way I would recommend a tour of the swamp with Atchafalaya Basin Landing Airboat Swamp Tours. We also had a great time visiting Martin Accordions Inc. They are known for the small Cajon souse box. They did a great tour and presentation. Yes Cameron Parish is a very pore area. To bad the government can send Billons overseas but cant help them rebuild.

We're happy to have you aboard, Gary -- thank you so much! As Westerners we're huge on boondocking over campgrounds; however, there are so few opportunities east of the Rockies to do so because our nation's public lands pretty much evaporate right at the Front Range. However, there are a few select locations like this one, Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SqY-UIfQnRQ.html and others where you can do so right on the sand. You have to watch the high tide (more so at PINS than here), and deep sand so you don't get stuck (again more so at PINS), but otherwise you get a true dispersed camping experience with unreal proximity to the surf to lull you to sleep each night.
