Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I cross Mobile Bay. It's true that it's one of the bigger open water crossings on the Great Loop--and it should be treated with some caution--but with a little planning ahead, you'll be fine. We prove it here...

You mentioned something about pros and cons in a shanty boat, but to be honest ever since you started on your journey, I haven't seen a single downside to doing the loop in a shanty boat like yours. Actually it seems to be ideal. There's a lot advantages to be said about shallow draft vessels😉

The area that you saw that you referred to as an atoll: this is an area that we build a berm around in order to pump dredging spoils into the center. Where are the sediment settles. The channel has to be dredged periodically. Eventually you'll have a man-made Island there and you just continue the process up to a certain height. As it builds up a new berm is placed around it and it just continues to get higher and higher.

Brenton, if you upgrade your radio to include AIS, the radio will display info on those large commercial ships. Name, size, type, direction ,ship speed and immediate collision info if applicable. It can also send out your boat info on AIS if you have that feature and choose to transmit it. I have used it on my previous sailboats that were larger than my current sailboat. Back when I sailed off shore. I'm now planning to stick to intercoastal & near coastal waters on my smaller sailboat.⛵

I fix boats and cars and I’ve been building up to something larger and have more of a commitment to boat life. I just got a 41’ Chris craft and have been trying to get it fully restored. It’s on the water but still needs plenty of repairs and renovations.

Brenton, in our condo complex in Key Largo, we have our own marina with about 186 slips available to the residents, the canal coming into the complex from the Atlantic is quite wide and about 25 feet deep, well about 2 years ago a pod of dolphins showed up and never left. They leave to go feed and then come back. You can actually get in the water with them and pet them. Lots of residents feed them mullet on a daily basis, mullet is their main source of food. On a daily basis they put on this aerial acrobatic show that is so cool to watch and they come up to the docks to be petted and they start talking, it's really a unique situation.... As long as the dolphins are there you will never see a shark close by....

The Wharf is actually still in Alabama. Lulu's is on the ICW at Gulf Shores, AL, and as you go east a few miles is when you get to the Wharf which is in Orange Beach AL. You won't cross into Florida for another 6 or 7 miles. About three years ago we were hit by Hurricane Sally with very significant damage to the area, which may explain the apparent abandonment of the building, the piles of rebar, and the bare dockage that you tied up to.

The building you were explore across from the Wharf in Orange Beach was a development for an aquarium. This was to have a large dolphin attraction. Orange Beach voted to outlaw having dolphin exhibits. Once this happened the investors pulled out and the property was never finished. It has say vacant for approximately 10 years. The Wharf has since bought the property and is developing it into condos.

@@backwatersandbackroads I'm trying to figure out how RU-vid works. I had replied to this before but apparently it didn't go. Anyway, if this is a duplication, please be patient! My husband Tom and I spent eleven summers in Bass Harbor, ME as postal contractors delivering mail by boat to an offshore island, Gotts Island. I chronicled our adventures in a blog. If you're interested in reading it, it might give you some personal insight before your lighthouse tour, into at least one area of Maine - Downeast and Acadia National Park. The first entry starts with an Intro & at the bottom is a prompt to take you to the next post. It's written like a book with chapters so you have to start at the beginning. Since Wordpress puts the most recent entry first, you have to sort of read it backwards. Maybe give you something to read on those lonely nights on the boat! We live in the middle of the Adirondacks in New York. Maine was our home away from home and we came to love it --we miss it and all the friends we made there over the years. Very interesting and complex culture outside of the tourist perspective, that we were privileged to experience, unlike most visitors. We're looking forward to watching your latest entry. downeastadventure.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/how-i-landed-in-lobsterland/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR07Vw3lR-DXQWUciUahRXxcmlNWzis4TNZPHAdjlq38DaHJOF2oTJHreUk_aem_AdPCEQcKCu_xhZZupB3vmU66dy4G-2h4IvGk2gcaiWgBcuW58rkMMiAm_Sg7QTU2Imq6X4pzzxnhVVLA2ur8xe8q

It was great to see you and Wavey! Did you look up the meaning of the ship’s name? It was “ships joyful” or something close to that. Anabel (my cat) even watched the last few minutes. She likes Wavey. I told my rolpher about you. She and her hubby are gonna check out your videos. She’s a friend of Matt’s too. Big hugs and love to you and Wavey from me and the kitties!!!!

I've been enjoying the trip with you since you started last fall. You mentioned your earlier trip and I've noticed it was on a pontoon based shanty boat versus the barge based shanty boat your using now. Would you please comment about the pros and cons of each style of shanty boat from your perspective. Does one get better fuel "mileage"? Is one more stable? I've read that pontoon based boats can be tippy if heavy (because of a higher center of gravity??). Would appreciate your thoughts.
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 4 месяца назад
Howdy. Thanks for sticking with us. The Shanty beagle was a 26 foot catamaran cruiser with deep fiberglass hulls (not toons) which made it more stable than a pontoon boat. The barge is definitely more stable and planted into the water. We've been finding its limits on this adventure, but so far we've had no troubles. If you could find a barge hull, that would be best.

I want to build a shanty like you got. Where do I get the barge and how do you attach the house to it without it leaking around the base. Oh yea and how long is your boat. I think I want something just a tad bigger from the way the interior looks. Been following you for a while now

I was curious about your solar and what all are you running. How many watts and batteries. I saw another video about shanty/camper/houseboat building and the person poo-pood the whole idea of using solar. Said it wouldn't work and don't waste your money. It seems to be working for you and many others in the youtube world. I think it'll, I am just inquiring about sizing. Thanks pard, Marty.
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 4 месяца назад
Oh yes, solar absolutely works. It's made for boats and campers. We run 800 watts. We use lead acid batteries. Upgrading to lithium eventually. We made a solar video in the beagle barge beagle build series with a list of components in description

You chose a good time to cross! Side note -- I can't speak for everyone but I'm really tired of having to hear the owner of Lulu's is Jimmy Buffets sister. It's mentioned every time the restaurant comes up. Nobody talks about the food, or how nice it is. If you're from this area, you've heard that 100k times. To be asked about that for 30 years must have been tough, and now it's condolences from everyone. Better advertising than being Casey Anthony's sister, or OJ Simpson's, so I guess it all worked out.
