It’s time to do a bit of exploring so we pop out of the marina and head over to the nearby mangroves in Peanut to go crabbing. It's good to be back out on the water and doing what we love.
Magnus has gleaned some high-level crabbing tips from a seasoned crabber and we power over to the beautiful network of mangroves a few kilometres away. He sets our pots in various locations and we head back into the marina to wait.
We come very close to buying a new boat, but alas we are pipped at the post. But, when the boat is being cleaned out and made ready to set sail a ridiculous amount of beer is found on board! Magnus is given an unusual, brightly coloured can of brew and decides to do a beer review on it. It's not our everyday beer choice!
After leaving the crab nets out overnight we head back out to collect our bounty with a delicious crab dinner on our minds!
Thanks for watching.
Until next time…
Wendy and Magnus

My dad used to visit Darwin on business trips in the 1960's and I remember him telling me that bits of flotsam like oxygen tanks from Japanese aircraft still used to occasionally wash up on the beaches of the harbor after storms. His dad's Military Veteran's grave is in the cemetery on Mcmillans road.

Nice video, you have massive tides up there, try chicken hearts for bait, might be good but you will need bait holders as they are smal

I can remember when there wouldn't be room for many Muddies in nets that size, but given how scarce they now appear to be, I wonder if a complete moratorium on fishing for them with cooee of Darwin might be necessary if their numbers are to recover.

Magnus I don't know what the rules and regulations have to say about it these days or what one costs now but I used to bait crab nets with a perforated tin of pet food which occasionally served as berley as well. I used to repeatedly push a rod through the contents which generally pong like a zombies socks when you open one particularly if you let it ripen a bit before use and perforation allows water to better penetrate and disperse a tempting invitation for crustaceans to dine. The berley trail it produced sometimes attracted fish as well as crabs and drowning some bait (I have never done much lure fishing for anything bigger than live bait) could be productive while sitting about contemplating life, the universe and everything. From a mate who was a doctor I got my graspers on some whopping great 60ml 'drawing up' syringes that look like the cooling jacket on a Vicker's Machine gun and blunt ended needles for them reminiscent of a barrel for one. Apparently medical people use the fiendish things to prepare doses of stuff to harpoon hapless patients with. I originally used the syringes to top up small motorcycle batteries with distilled water but using them to dispense fish oil provided a bit of extra zest after a container of bait or berley had been languishing in the water for a while. A 'catfood colander' is relatively easy to attach securely in a net or pot. Lasts longer than unprotected bait because all the wee nibblers can't scoff it before desirable target species find it. Can be simply disposed of in a bin after use and worked relatively well for blue swimmers. From watching all your episodes several times now I imagine you might make up your own container should the technique also have some merit in your opinion. I remember one crabbing trip with an old mate in my tinny when he fiddled about attaching a fish head to his net while I chucked in a stink cartridge and heaved mine overboard. When next my cobber checked his net a ray or Port Jackson shark had managed to tear the fish head free unnoticed and wrought carnage on his net in the process so it surfaced minus contents looking a bit like it had been through the propeller of a tugboat.
