This guy is so wholesome.. It does my heart good to see a happy hard working family man with wonderful values. It's men like this that make America great right now. Thank you, Jacob Knowles
In Alberta, Canada here, so I generally have a contact in PEI so we get them shipped here from there. We do some big lobster fest parties at least 4 times a year, sometimes 6. We will bring in 200 lobsters for each party. It’s a private party, but once you join a couple of car clubs and contact the friends you have made over the years, when people start replying is when we get the numbers to order. We often freeze a half dozen to a dozen, depending on how well they are eaten etc. Our friend does a couple of massive briskets on the smoker starting the day before. We actually hire a catering company to do the lobsters and salads for us. They will do tails to eat with butter and the claws go into lobster rolls for lunch the next day. Show up at 4:00 pm eat, drink (byob, the rest is on my buddy & I) stay if you are drinking. We rent as many RVs as we can so people aren’t driving. I own 4 now as I snap up lightly used, but nice 5th wheels we keep at the cabins all summer otherwise. The fuel hauling those things back & forth rivals the lobster bills!! 😂😂😂. We are on the prairies/foothills so the only other “seafood” we get here are “Prairie Oysters”! 😂😂😂. (If you’re not sure, look em up!) Heh heh. For the springtime feast we have those as part of the feast as well. We process about 1500 head of calves the 3 days prior. Cowboys & hot rodders with live bands! My cousin’s band and one or two we hire. Ones gotta be country (ugghhhh😂). Yeee haaawwww! 😊
I am baffled how your channel worked it's way on to my page, but, at the same time, I am weirdly grateful. LOL I never ever thought about lobster fishing, enjoy eating them, just never thought about catching them. Your personality caught me and now I am here to stay. So much fun to learn all you have to teach. Thank you!
😂 same thing happened to me I'm like where did this come from and then I'm hooked ....no pun intended😂 Anyhow his personality just draws you in and his excitement over the lobsters nothing is ever boring with Jacob and his channel
I liked seeing his dad toss the barrels over from his boat. All the old Lobstermen in Maine have serious old man strength. His dad was probably doing that with the metal barrels 40 years ago.
My father was from Maine, and he also caught lobster. He passed away when I was 6 years old, and I kind of wish that I had followed in his footsteps. You're living the dream, my friend. Best of luck
Seriously doubt it...Not shown is all the downtime they experience, and all the arguments from their women when a storm shores them for weeks at a time...Or, they draw a bad lease claim (spots they are allowed to fish), and it wasn't maintained by the last crew...
Jacob that was super interesting! I was glued to my tablet watching you bring in those fish! I love every part of what you do, even the cooking of the lobsters. Your life is so fascinating. I live a very boring life by comparison because I am physically disabled and that is very limiting sadly, but watching your videos enriches my life, so thank you for creating them. Have a great weekend!
I think this is cool. its hard honest work with a bit of adventure to it. I think its something a lot of people are lacking. And thats why the vids are poping off.
I've used brunt boots for 4 years now. Definitely no breakin period. Awesome boots. Awesome quality. I work construction so I use a pair every year but I always love a new pair of brunts. Try out the laceless pair. It's all I use, flip the soles and enjoy your feet thanking you on the daily. ❤. Definitely order same size as your regular shoe size. They come bigger then usual but not too big. I wear 10.5 in shoes and get 10.5 in boots.
Great video, grew up on my fathers and uncles boats as a sternman out of Boston Harbor(Winthrop) We couldn't wait for the Poggy boats to come up North with the migration. Would feed them some food and in turn they would swing the arm over and fill our boat. Was a great time to be on the water. Miss it terribly.
I’ve learned so much about how invested and knowledgeable commercial lobstermen are in sustainability. Thanks for entertainment AND education. Oh - and the eye candy 😍.
I so appreciate your attitude about the task of running a large (for the size of boat). Just learning how to do a task as complex as this one is a huge learning curve.
This is without dought the most rewarding and interesting utube video I have EVER watched. It was almost as if I was one of the many working! I felt the excitement too. You guys are well rounded. I like it you adhere by the quota. It's exhausting having to break the quota to the authorities. Do the right thing and there will be no excessive fees and as reality has it gaol time if you can't afford it. We'll done for respecting the rules. Serenity. We'll done for teaching how good living pays off.
@@FundyisleLegacy i have alot of old memories from visiting moncton nb. Magnetic hill the tidal bore. The boat races in Fredericton next to the big marina.
Thank you, BRUNT, I appreciate you sponsoring Jacob and the crew. I would try a pair, but I am disabled, with no use of my legs, so even a pair of bedroom slippers lasts me for the rest of my life. But I still thank you for your sponsorship of this awesome channel!
Have you thought of fabricating a device you can place on the top of the barrel like a large funnel to keep from having so many fish lost out the sides and being shoveled off the deck? Just an idea from a landlubber in Texas. Also, have you ever eaten any of these fish, or are they not something good to eat? When your casting your nets, it just reminds me of the Apostles fishing. Of course they didn't have drones or motors on their boats. Red skies at night and hope you have a successful season.
They are technically edible -- not poisonous -- but extremely unpalatable. They are essential forage for coastal species from all kinds of birds including bald eagles to many predatory fish up to tuna and sharks and marine mammals -- dolphin and whales.
One of the things I love about these videos is that it demonstrates the economic system of Distributism. This system put the means of production into the hands of local business owners rather than in the hands of huge corporations. This also puts the governance into the hands of these business owners. Unfortunately I don't think this aspect of the system is true of the lobster industry in Maine.
There is 5,500 boats registered to lobster in Maine to remain registered they have to follow Federal and State quotas that regulate the whole industry with some variation between Maine, NH, Massachusetts, Maryland and possibly Rhode Island. The most "lobster industry" ships are in Massachusetts with their daily catch limits because some of their fishing spots are more protected from the open ocean so they can safely anchor and be out for a week or two at a time instead of daily before heading to the processing plants. As we got better at communicating and working together a lot of businesses became more sustainable across the board. Now, onto hunting invasive green crabs to eradication in New England.
Trust me; Big corporations would do it if they could...They cant, because then they would only work hard enough not to get fired; VS, the current system where only the best workers have a job...
This is awesome! Reminds me of throwing a cast net on the same type of fish in south Alabama. Just 100000× more lol. Living in the Interior of Alaska now. I do miss having the saltwater resources out my back door. Have a 7+ hr ride to get there now. Love your channel man! God bless yall!
Great episode you never get to old to learn I think Jacob was Spider Man at one time. Your crew rocks in teamwork really enjoyed this and I don’t have fish scales in my hair and didn’t even work up a sweat.
What I appreciate n your vids is the way you and your crew are mission focused and enthusiastic about getting the job done. No doubt it’s really hard labor but you and your crew celebrate success. To achieve this day after day requires skilled leadership. I’m sure that there are numerous bad days that generate anger and frustration but the foundation of team and your continued leadership get you through the difficult times. Well done sir you have my respect.
I hope your sponsors appreciate you as much as you do them because you are the only channel I never skip through when it's sponsor time LOL You make it fun and interesting.
I do utility and foundation work. I absolutely wear out a pair of boots in six months, no matter what brand. I would be delighted to get 2 years, forget 14!
We pile the net same as you when hauling back with enough fish for our limit. If we doubt we have a large enough set, we’ll put it the rings on the bar when we start bringing it back aboard just to be ready to set out again.
Found your short videos on accident and this was my first full video watch. I love the "behind the scenes" of any industry to see what goes into it. Yours is no different! I dont eat lobster (or seafood for that matter), but I love learning and watching what you do! Keep up the awesome work and keep making these videos!!!!
I used to do this on the Chesapeake Bay on a little larger scale. We used planes as spotters and our circle was a little bigger . Down here we call them Bunkers
Really enjoyed this video!! I like seeing the intricacies and steps required to be a lobster fisherman. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the processing of your bait! Could you do one on the process of “selling” getting lobsters weighed too?
Your life is so Fn hard. I’m glad that social media is helping. Watching your crew harvest bait, makes me think of Winslow Homer, and his artwork, depicting sea fishing. Especially the bait seller! Of which I have a reprint of this, hanging in my hallway!
(for those who do not know "co-op") "Cooperative business", aka "a cooperative"... From the USDA website: "A cooperative is defined as a user-owned and controlled business from which benefits are derived and distributed equitably on the basis of use or as a business owned and controlled by the people who use its services."
Good morning from Kodiak Island Alaska this is the same thing we do for salmon and Herring fishing it's actually sunk boats when you get the Herring and they sound
You guys are amazing love watching your videos, your dad is awesome as well love the amazing teamwork between the boats. Incredible team, you guys rock. Be safe out there boys. 😀👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’ll never untoward some people who have never done the job, though out their opinions on what’s wrong with how you’re doing the job. They have zero understanding of what’s going on and why, yet feel it necessary to criticize others hard work. Shameful! You guys are doing fantastic work. Don’t pay any attention to the haters. 😊
Really loving your videos so interesting to see how lobsters are caught how the whole fishery works and how they are brought to market.. I live in New Hampshire and spent many summers in Maine and near the ocean... Lobster/seafood is my weakness.... I could eat it everyday... Always look forward to my special days when I get to have lobsters :) Thank you for your videos ~
I’ve been seeing you Jacob on Facebook for a while and didn’t know you had a RU-vid channel but I’m really glad I found it a few months ago. I’ve always loved lobster and it’s really cool seeing them getting caught and everything that goes into it
This is such a wonderful video I'm truly glad you made this I got alot of answers from this video. Thank you all for doing what you all do and for sharing with us. I love this channel soooooooo much.
Jacob and crew, thank you for making your videos. Many memories of my grand-father, father (who only fished for 5 years :-D ), cousins and my uncles on Grand Manan, New Brunswick and Swains Island Maine. 🐠 🦞 In memory of Bob Green, Al Kelly, Uncle Maynard Guptill, (Grand Manan NB), Uncle Llewelyn Joyce (Maine)Kodoos to my cousin Spencer Joyce (Boat,Daily Bread and his son Joshua (Swain’s Island Maine). Take care and stay safe. :-)
We are seeing bunker in huge numbers here in the Saint Andrews New Brunswick area. Only started seeing them in the last few years. BTW, they make great striper bait.
