I’ve lost 500 lbs following a carnivore lifestyle (yes, not a typo). I failed many diets and lap band surgery. My life was consumed by food. Carnivore has given me the “off switch” that I never had before. At 52 years I feel and look better than I did in my 20s. My doctor is amazed and happy with my transformation. People tell me it’s extreme and restrictive, 800 lbs is restrictive. I am finally free of the food addiction I had and living my best life, all thanks to the carnivore lifestyle.
I had a heart attack 6 years ago and followed the AHA dietary advice and lost a few pounds. My cardiologist wanted me to lose more weight and suggested that I could cut back on my carb intake which sent me down the Keto path and hooked me up with the low carb community. I slowly slipped into the carnivore community and have never felt better. My cardiologist knows about my diet and can only say that it seems to be working. I could care less about blood work, as long as I feel great I'm good and all blood values are based on a metabolically sick population. I' never going back to the SAD way of eating.
Not just as a fellow physician and surgeon, but as someone who is into bodybuilding and fitness, you are one of the smartest people I’ve ever come across in my entire life! Thank you for your knowledge, opinions, and everything else you’ve shared. I truly have learned a lot from you.
Same here. Cywes openly shared he was morbidly obese and didn’t know how to get healthy though he unknowingly for years gave his patients near deadly advise. I love how his now carnivore era advise has come from trial and error and not from all his degrees on the wall.
A really sensible talk. I dislike some of the obsessive stuff out there. I have autoimmune issues and heading towards carnivore. So far I find fasting up to 5pm has been hugely helpful in terms of gut issues. Lamb seems to be the best for me (trust me to have expensive taste!) Weirdly chicken causes huge issue. I like beef, but lamb makes me feel better. Thanks for explaining.
I got mutton from a local farmer. Huge beasts, was £180 per ewe including harvest and butchering and delivered chilled ready for freezing. She was worried in case it was "too fatty"! Fat is my friend I said. I also got all the bones, fat and trimmings from the butcher and made lamb broth, rendered fat, etc. I know it is difficult for people without the contacts in the countryside, but with persistence it can be done.
“No one knows how much protein you need to eat.” I’ve always thought this. Your body knows this. Also calories. You can’t overeat meat. Try it. But don’t calorie restrict. Trust the process.
You are the first person I have found that does carnivore because you enjoy this way of eating the most. Me too! I don't have an alterier motive other than that, and I believe I can be the healthiest me this way. Thank you for all the info!
My fat/protein ratio used to be skewed more toward protein, and i wasn't sustaining that very well. I was low in energy and craving carbs. Now, i am eating higher fat - about 70/30 ratio and doing great so far - energy is up, less hungry, and no carb cravings 😌
@@copieXD Smoking it isn't healthy. Edibles are a better choice. Gambling addiction can cause major financial problems. We don't need milk as adults especially from non humans.
@@EngineersQuest that seems like a problem with the individual and not the substance/activity, dairy on the carnivor diet is very effective if you're trying to gain weight, so does have it's uses.
@@copieXD The first two I agree with. Some people are fine with moderation. Dairy? Humans don't need it after infancy. We only needed human breast milk until we could get the nutrients from solid foods.
I always appreciate your reasonable, scientific approach. My experience with Judy has not been that - she deletes comments that question her science and is disingenuous. I'll keep listening to Dr Cywes to get reasonable, scientific information when he tells you when he has an opinion.
As a Lactation Consultant I love your explanation of breast milk and breastfeeding. Great touch on feeding breast milk in a bottle. So many women pump and feed now.
I am testimony that this has helped my life and health greatly being ill for many years it's been a godsent so keep up the great information thank you.And I give thanks for all the meat which God gave us permission to do so if we do choose to eat animals.
Dogs are carnivores. They thrive on meat, bone and organs in proper proportions. A small amount of veggies could be fed but not essential. My dogs are 15 and 16 and thriving still on this diet. And they do not need added salt!
@gcs7817 Along with many other diseases. IBD is rampant among dogs and cats just like it is with humans. The vets recommend kibble. Yikes. They are clueless about nutrition, just like many doctors.
Thanks for another great video with some awesome content. What is the best way to up-regulate the lactase enzyme for those who have trouble consuming dairy?
Not really true, when your adrenals are done even black coffee can spike cortisol and epinephrine which will spike glucose and then insulin, well 1 coffee will be alright but 6 or 7 may not 😂
What about black coffee with some heavy cream and butter? 😂😂 I never use sweeteners, but I need the cream or I just don’t drink coffee. And I drink barely half a cup anyway.
I agree with all this. I am very much in favor of the carnivore/keto diet I have been on since September 2023. However, after 1 year of treatment with Trulicity in 2022, my stomach-brain signals are damaged, therefore, dietary fat, such as e.g. butter, doesn't easily make me full. I could eat a whole 200 g package (this is how we get it in Poland) and not feel stuffed.:( I need to control it consciously and not with my hormones:( I hope, with time and the carnivore eating, this will change, and I will restore my correct feeling of satiety.
16:47 There is a very important nuance in your recommendation for 'salt' intake - you state 2-3g of SODIUM CHLORIDE (aka Table Salt(-- the nice salts we are leaning into, Redmonds, Maldon etc. have around .4g of sodium per 1g of the 'salt' - so 3g of Table Salt would have around 1.3g of sodium. Too often I think folks think 'table salt' = 'sodium' when there are actually quite a few different minerals contained within.
I try and balance my fat - and protein intake in grams, which will vary daily, and that gives me that 60:30 ratio (roughly), with anything between 3 and 10 grams going to carbs. My weight is stable, BMI 23, and I have to check that I do not lose weight.
What's your view on eating pork and pork fat? I've read that pork fat digests differently to beef/ lamb/ chicken fats and should be eaten in moderation. Welcome your thoughts.
for liver (i HATE liver), the way i take mine is by cutting it into small cubes, something that easy to swallow whole and freeze em on a sheet pan (you can do this with raw or cooked liver), and then chuck em in a container that i keep in the freezer, i just take a few cubes 2-3 times a week with a meal, just swallow them whole like they are pills. no flavor, all benefits!
Last night I had pork chops. The fat is minimal on it so I had half a stick of butter. Every time I cut some pork chop I slice a sliver of butter and add it to the pork and eat it that way, so I’m adding my fat to my pork chop because it’s a lean meat with minimal fat. Everybody else had a salad with ranch I avoided that and just had meat only and I ate till I was satiated😎
For getting enough iodine and iodide, table salt is way insufficient. Americans are extremely deficient in iodine. Instead, Lugol’s iodine solution (2% or 5%) is excellent (liquid or gel caps) or you can take Iodoral tablets (12.5).
Almost ever low carb doctor eventually goes carnivore or near carnivore. It is pretty clear that once you stop carbs you don't crave them, and if you dabble back into them, your body loses the abiltiy to tolerate the lectins, etc. I cannot believe how sick a small bag of potato chips cooked in sunflower oil will make me. At times i test different old fav foods and I can't eat them even occasionally anymore because it makes me incredibly sick. Peanut oil and sesame are okay, but not canola, not corn, etc. Unbelievable how sick I will get. Packaged food smells and tastes like plastic now lol. Real food still tastes good. Very small quantities of real vegetables are tolerable but not optimal. It is amazing how sick I get eating tomato skins and seeds, ditto potato skins. Babies instinctively dislike vegetables. There must be a good reason for it. No baby of mine every turned up a nose to meat.
According to your criteria people like me don’t ‘need’ Carnivore. However, I DO need it for food freedom and journey away from alcohol and carb addiction. Thx doc for all your wise words. 👏
Have you read Raunenheimer and Simpson Eat Like The Animals? Two research scientists who inadvertently discovered that it is protein that determines satiety. They tested their hypothesis with insects, mammals, and even Petri dish slime. All species will continue to eat until they reach their specific amount of protein. A hidden gem in this space. Everyone talks about fat and carbohydrates when discussing obesity while the 800 pound gorilla is sitting quietly in the corner.
I love diary - all of it. However, I get an inflammatory response from it - arthritis like pain and stiffness in the knuckles of my hands. And, it causes me to be constipated.
Saturated fat doesn't trigger my satiety signals. I can eat butter pretty much endlessly with no digestive problems or sickness. I can eat 3 sticks of butter in one sitting, if I allow myself to eat 'intuitively.' My body doesn't stop me eating fat, so I have to object, doc. Maybe I'm a freak.
@@robertcywes2966 I did gain weight while I ate butter freely, yes, but it pretty much fell off when I removed the butter from the fridge. I'd been listening to people like Elizabeth Bright who recommended iodine and butter for low thyroid symptoms, So for several months I ate a very high fat diet, with weekly fat fasts. Zero carb carnivore (with coffee.) Fat to protein would have been an average of 80-90% over this period. I was still terribly cold all the time, hair still shedding etc. My bloodwork showed normal TSH, then my lipids, after a fast, were frankly terrifying. TC: 650, non-HDL: 580, HDL: 70, Trigs: 328(!) That was the point when butter was ejected from my life. The TGs scared me. I know my lipid metabolism is probably compromised due to low thyroid. I have low stomach acid, and probably bile, and I supplement with a high dose of Betaine HCL with pepsin to help me digest large meals. This might explain the endless eating of butter if I allow it. Even after a huge meal of protein and fat, I can feel competing signals of stuffedness AND hunger. So I guess my body still isn't pulling what it needs out of the food. What really shocked me was my Ferritin levels being very low after a year on carnivore eating plenty of steak and liver. I know low iron and low thyroid are inextricable, in the same way that low thyroid and high cholesterol are linked. So I'm on a large dose of iron now to try to replenish them. Maybe that will sort things out. I do think I might need to reintroduce some carbs, though. Saladino might be right. My thyroid might need some insulin. My hba1c and fasting insulin are both rock bottom. I'm more concerned what lack of insulin does to someone like me with a broken lipid metabolism, though, eating a high fat diet. If I can't store any excess fat I eat and I'm not quickly metabolizing it, then I guess high triglycerides are inevitable. My BMI is 21. I'm cutting my fat intake at least until my Ferritin is replenished.
Beef tallow and lard rendered from animal we buy. Thats how we cook everything on occasion Ghee as well. Fatty cuts of meat been carnivore for going on year four. However even though I don’t consume carbs but last March Blood Sugar went sky high. Working hard to get those numbers down. Trending the right way but never fast enough. Frustrating when I don’t have Docs that understand blood work. Isn’t many prescription drugs similar to supplements?
Hi Dr Cywes, I’m looking for a South African Doctor who can assist my gran to transition to the carnivore diet. She has a long list of health issues. We are based in Johannesburg, South Africa and all the doctors tell her to keep eating the standard “healthy diet”.
@@1Hope4All Perhaps a chicken when first hatched, but they don't lay eggs. Eggs are from adult birds that have spent quite some time eating grains and, hopefully, green matter...however that would be debatable. Most if not all commercial eggs don't have a hope of ever being a chicken either. It is just a statement to me that makes no sense. I do love to eat eggs though and do believe they are good for me.
If a person is carnivore, how do you make sure they have enough protein to keep then satiated? How is a person to know they are eating too much protein?
Hello Dr. Cywes . Maybe you can answer something for me. I have been on Keto for a little over a year and now leaning more towards a carnivore life style. Always have suffered from anxiety and I still do😞 I am on anxiety meds and was hoping I would be off them by now. I have one cup of hot coffee a day, I use salt and spices. Is anxiety something that I just have to continue to deal with? I’ve been dealing since I was in Grade school and I am now 68. My tummy is shaky first thing in the morning. I need answers, please!
I'm biased in the opposite direction about protein over eating protein is less bad than under eating protein. And someday I will do labs and it will be posted on my channel. So we will know who is correct and who isn't. Specifically for me as a n=1. I've been playing around with how much protein how much fat in the context of a meat salt water carnivore diet. And I still don't know what works best for me. I just know that I'm now able to put down 2 kilograms of meat cooked weight in 1 meal/sitting.
I would only do that with grass fed beef/fat... When the cows have a grain diet and are pumped full of shots, all that crap goes into the fat. The meat is still fine, but if you eat a lot of fat it's then worth getting a higher quality cow.
I have been carnivore now for about 9 months . Great success down over 100lb and off most meds . I am thriving , I got all my information from RU-vid. I would like to say this is the best video I have seen by far . Thank you ❤
And he now drinks the excellent South African rooibos tea instead, so we are all on our unique individual paths that change all the time. He is indeed a "true health care worker". In fact, one of the very best!!
I don’t want to give up my coffee either. I just flat out enjoy it. I put heavy cream but now I need a sweetener. Coffee for me has become a treat now and I like to have a little sweetness.
THIS, is a true healer!! We all need more doctors JUST LIKE Dr Cywes!!! Love this guy!! Carnivore for 8 months, down 38 lbs, blood pressure is 122/84. THIS IS THE WAY!!!!!
The fact that you can say that you disagree with someone and at the same time say they are incredibly brilliant, says a lot about u as a person and as a investigator. Lots of respect for you, sir!
Thank you, Brother! Truth received. Into my 3rd month. Best days of my life. Body, mind, and soul. 56 young, male. I am learning more about the way I choose to eat. By what the mind and body tell me, and by truth, I realize with real eyes by doctors of truth. Mahalo Aloha from Michigan. Subscribed. ✌️💪
Thanks once again for an excellent video!! My father in law passed away in his sleep at 87. He wasn’t born in a hospital and never went for any operations. He refused to go to drs or use medicine. He wasn’t carnivore but he ate real food and water (and he loved his sweets). Healthy and fit until his last breath. The health care system is failing us.
Yep, keeping slim and moving and eating healthy for the most part does a lot of good. My great grandma still drives and cooks and lives alone at 92, and gramps at 74 still does physical labour with greater vigor than many unhealthy 25 year olds these days.
Thank you so much for this video! I am one month carnivore and my biggest confusion has been more or less protein. I have a much better understanding now and feel more confident that I can adjust for my body.
I’m 68 and not a complete carnivore yet. However I grew up drinking whole milk which now I use when I can’t go back to sleep and I love liverwurst. I live in Italy and found a group in sudtirol that makes it and I am so happy that I found it. I think we have to find our own path to healing. Whatever works for us works. It may not work for someone else but no can say that you have to do this or that. My gosh, we have been bombarded by the standard American diet for years. Look at what has happened!
I’m traveling to Italy for 10 days and want to try and stay carnivore. I’ve heard the meat is lean in Italy. Is real butter available at restaurants? What carnivore friendly items are available at most restaurants? I’ll be in Rome, Amalfi & Florence. I don’t love seafood:(
@@lindseytaylor9758 Hello. Yes the meat in Italy is pretty lean. However you can get ribs (costine) and long cooked meats like osso buco that are fattier. There are restaurants that offer different grilled meats. Yes you can get real butter either salted or unsalted.I don’t go out too much and I usually get some sort of seafood. Talk with your waiter about what is available and ask if it can be cooked in butter instead of oil. If they cook in oil you can ask about them using olive oil instead of other kinds of oil.if you like salami and/or cheese there is nothing better than Italian. It really depends on what type of carnivore foods you eat. Good luck and have fun. 👍🏻

Yes! There are some things we grew up with that make daily living miserable without. Finding a way to include them, maybe at a small amt. I have gone from 4+ coffees a day to 1 and I'm ok with that. I add butter or Wagyu beef tallow to leaner cuts of meat.
Great video tackling the question of ‘how much to eat’ and the ratio of fat to protein. I have NEVER known how much of each to eat, but over the carnivore years I have come to eat twice a day until I am really full and don’t fancy any more of the same ( beef, eggs, fish and belly pork). I do not need to lose weight. I am 63 and post menopausal. Sometimes my brain wants to eat more, but I get full up too quickly😢. The fat seems to be very satisfying.
Yes I'm similar- 70 and not overweight no meds etc but I have never been able to eat big meals and feel full easily. Most of my life I've eaten one main meal a day plus a snack- never 3 meals like friends. Trying to navigate this carnivore diet despite numerous videos. Dr Cywes has retained helped clarify some stuff for me
Dr Rob, I'm from Durban SA. Thankfully your podcasts are soooooooo full of hints, tips and detailed scientific knowledge. I'm 75 and carnivore for 4 weeks now. You are my daily motivation yo keep me on track. Feelings massively better now. Keep up the wonderful motivation. Luv it.BAIE DANKIE hoor.❤
Hi! I highly recommend you watch Dr Berry’s video where he interviews the Iodine expert, Dr Briwnstein. You’d be surprised to learn the amount of iodine that his research shows/proves is needed to prevent glandular cancers (such as breast, prostate, thyroid, lymph, etc) is far more than the US standard recommendation. The video is on Dr Ken Berry’s channel and took place only a few days ago. I hope this helps you!😊
I live on a dairy farm in NorCal & have access to raw dairy, including keifer & yogurt. Yum. My butcher makes warrior burgers for me. That's ground beef w heart, liver, kidney mixed in. Yum 😋
For those who can afford it, Force of Nature sells ground meats with organ meat included. They call it their Ancestral Blends. While some of their meats are available in a local store here in Milwaukee, I usually buy online because more variety is available there.
I keep my coffee and pepper too!! I was wondering about pork???? Belly pork to be precise... I really enjoy it - ok to have every now and again? No medical health issues - Carnivore lifestyle by choice. Thanks as always for such an informative straight to the point chat!
Eat for what works for you. I can eat huge amounts of beef and lamb fat but pork fat makes me feel sick. Pork belly with crispy crackling is a favourite, but I have to cut off much of the fat, yet with beef and lamb I eat EXTRA fat!!!
I have been only doing carnivore for 6 weeks but am more aware of my body now.. It tells me I need fat at times other times that I need protein. I now know listening to you that when my body tells me I need fat it is because I have had to much protein. Thanks for this video. Annamieke from NZ
It will become even more intuitive the longer you do it.....i have days where i forget to eat, and it doesn't bother me...more than 2 years eating this way now Keep going!!
Dam this was solid, especially the part on protein. It's actually quite amazing how fast you get signals from the stomach when you have had enough food . Dr.Cywes is right, its almost always less than we think we need.
Love your message. I have drank raw milk for over 20 years. It makes me feel great. Raised my kids on it. I recently added heavy cream to it even tho it is high fat jersey milk. I eat any animal food that doesn't make me feel like shit. Sadly plants just dont agree with my body. I just try to stay where my body feels good. Everything else just goes in one ear and out the other. Damn I love your passion. It matches mine. I do not meet too many people that have kick ass passion. Absolutely love it!💜
Throwing out veges (especially from south african stores) really pushed me towards carnivore along with having two Operations from too much fibre giving me hemorrhoids when i was a teenager - all the doctors said i needed more fibre which totally fucked me around. Been carnivore/meat based for 8 months with a few small carb treats along the way. Cut out seed oils too. 1st time in my life i have had normal bowel movements and with out anxiety or pain. No more gas or bloating. Dandruff gone. Painful cracked and dry heels gone. General skin improvement. Lost alot of fat. Sleep well. Feet and legs no longer swollen and sore. Have energy to gym hard and walk 1hr a day. Waiting for morning wood to reliably return though but was fat for 10years. Never going back to carb/fibre based life. I have been eating when hungry and often dont get over 2200cal-2500cal. I am 192cm tall and down to 120kg (was 130). Always wondering if im not eating enough but getting more than that is going to be forcing myself. Getting 160-200g protein, 100+ grams of fat. I was putting a fair amount of salt on steaks and was getting bloated legs and feet - my body doesnt like a lot of sodium apparently.
🎉The more I hear from you, the more I respect & appreciate your knowledge & frankness, & ability to see things in a subjective way. & I thoroughly enjoyed your chat with Anthony Chaffee! Thanks ! 🥩
Thank you so much for this balanced non non-legalistic on Carnivore. The craziness of some people can turn you off because it makes you give up. I like this balanced approach.
Yes, truly. This was refreshing. I am just considering myself 95% meat based. I am still having my berries, peppers, asparagus, greek yogurt. And some days I have no veg or fruit. I cant do the cult style diet lol
Thank you for clearing up the part about dairy. We have raw milk everyday as we have a milk cow and it was the one thing I went back and forth on whether or not to give up. I watched my son, after beating cancer at 1 year old, when we put him on raw dairy just explode in his growth. So I never doubted the benefits of it, just wasn't for sure how to go about it on a carnivore diet. Thanks again for a great video with lots of great information!
The more my body gets used to low carb eating, the more I’ve noticed it just lets me know when I’m done eating. It’s very clear and it has nothing to do with my stomach being full. My body doesn’t feel overburdened, I just feel done.
very very interesting, so a person whos jammed up to their eyeballs with vaccines would have problems with eggs whereas someone who has taken very little if any throughout life should have no issues.
Interesting. Though, many people these days have more allergies in general. Studies have shown in animals that higher caloric intake than necessary will make more inflammation and so cause inflammatory responses to foods we eat. Interestingly, we can actually overcome allergies by micro doses of the proteins and by improving the dietary situation. The most common one is a small intake of raw honey causing pollen allergies to subside. It's even been done with fatal peanut allergies to full cure, in some cases.
"Supplements? I dont need all that shit." Seconds later, you're promoting Keto IQ! I disagree with the trace mineral supplements. In an ideal world, we should be able to obtain sufficient amounts of nutrients. But we do not live in an ideal world, and the reality is our soil no longer has the nutrients it once had. That is why I take certain mineral supplements - even with a 100% grass fed lifestyle
Turned 80 this week. Started on carnivore end of Feb. history of colitis, autoimmune and cancer. I have never felt better. So many improvements. Your videos that I watched this morning were so helpful. Thank you, thank you.
Really enjoying your videos. It’s hard to get grass raised, real beef and dairy where the animals aren’t forced to be inoculated. And to get grass pastures that haven’t been weed controlled by herbicides unfortunately. And the powers that be are allowing and encouraging destruction of perfect grazing lands by buying them up and placing housing or solar “farm” on them. The destruction of perfect lands for growing wonderful food production is happening now at a insane rate. Regards from Oz.
I have a feeling I’m eating too much protein…Looking forward to my follow up appt. with Dr. C next week to discuss my labs. Very thankful I have you in my corner!!!
@johnrecker in most of professor Bikman's videos he speaks on the importance of protein consumption for adults. But he also speaks extensively on Insulin and blood glucose. These things he's devoted twenty years of his life studying. The amount of protein can be quantified.
I believe Prof. Bikman is speaking at Dave Feldmans Citizen science foundation fundraiser in a couple weeks in Vegas. I look forward to his presentation.
@@Brainwashedmorons69 Do you have a video link to this info? All I see online is that older adults (I'm 67) have to eat a ton of protein or else, sigh.
Superb wee video thanks. Subscribed. Been on Carny 1 month and still in disbelief at the improvements I’ve had. The stop eating when your body says so is so true and hard to overcome after a lifetime eating “amounts”. Twice Ive had the runs from eating too much fat in a meal and both times I felt I’d had enough way before the plate was finished but made myself eat it as I thought I’d not eaten enough based on the amount of food on the plate.
