I gave up coffee for a month before I did a full lipid panel, because Dr. Paul Mason said that for *some people* coffee can raise triglycerides. I did a little N of 1 experiment. I am happy to report that abstaining from coffee had zero effect on my triglycerides, or any other lipid markers. As soon as I got my results, I put in a batch of cold brew mocha using my French press... coffee plus 1/2 cup of CrioBru (coffee nibs you brew like coffee). Next morning, I put 4tbs of the cold brew concentrate and a tablespoon of grassfed butter, teaspoon of beef gelatin (makes the froth frothier), poured boiling water half way, used the milk frother to whip the butter into a froth, added more water to fill the cup... after a month away from coffee or mocha, this was a cup of heaven.

My grandmother always drank black coffee. I wish I could get into it. Coffee without a bit of milk & sugar is just too bitter for me. Any suggestions? Brand or roast?
@backpackingonline
@backpackingonline 3 года назад
Sarah, I was told, if you add a small amount of salt to your cup of coffee, it removes the bitterness. I don’t know. I prefer light roast peaberry coffee that has flavor without bitterness. The peaberry coffees have one coffee bean in the pod, not two. In my experience, it is the dark roast coffee that has more bitterness. I woukd think how it is prepared makes coffee more bitter, also. I prefer cold brew, light roast, peaberry coffee for full flavor and pleasant taste.

This was timely. I gave up carbs and sugar. I unconsciously started to drink sparkling water. It seemed like a non guilty treat to me as there is no sugar, or sweetners, or anything but carbonated water and some essence of lime (my favorite). I did not realize until this video that it was my serotonin high that I was chasing. I just knew it was what I liked and I didn't even realize that as an addict I NEEDED to replace one addiction with another and that other one needed to be healthy and non harmful. I am viciously defensive of my sparkling water. I LOVE it. It makes perfect sense. The first thing we have to realize is that this overeating and carb/sugar problem is an addiction and needs to be treated as such. Thanks for your no nonsense approach of education that really hits home.

in the 70's i was diagnosed as hyperactive. i was told to drink coffee as it would calm me down. i would sit with my mother and drink coffee, cream and sugar before she would go to work. it started me out on the roller coaster of life which led to alcohol and drug addiction. putting substances in my body to change how i feel. later in life i tried black coffee with mct oil and it led me to such intense cravings, it was like torturing myself; my day was ruined by 9am. my family members think its a complete joke as they waddle around with their obese bodies guzzling dunkin donuts and complaining of tiredness.. coffee is dangerous for alot of people with insulin issues and should be avoided. ive watched so many drunks switch to smoking and coffee and believe they are no longer addicted because they stopped drinking alcohol. until you can stop putting things in your body to change how you feel you will always be an addict and will never find peace

Tea! Never been a fan of coffee but I love my tea. Especially that fresh cup I make in the early afternoons. I use loose leaf tea from places like China, Taiwan, Japan, India, and similar. It requires I spend a couple of minutes fiddling with infuser, the leaves themselves, waiting for water to boil, and a steeping. I then sit down, close my eyes, and spend a couple of minutes sipping the tea and relaxing. The entire process, including boiling the water, takes about 5 minutes, but its five minutes where I've separated myself from the chaos going on around me. That afternoon ritual is probably my favorite part of the day.

I’m three months into being a ketogenarian and also love my coffee. However, I was still experiencing real difficulty getting to sleep at night, so had to reduce my caffeine intake. Even when having only one “proper” coffee first thing in the morning and the remainder decaf, I was still suffering with insomnia, so I cut out caffeine altogether and now only drink decaf. I still enjoy my coffee even though every cup is decaf. I know decaf has traces of caffeine, but significantly less, and I am sleeping better.

Me too! My doctor said some people metabolize caffeine at a slower rate, and suggested not having any caffeine (or chocolate) after 12 noon. I only started drinking coffee 2-3 years ago while trying to reduce my Diet Cola habit. In spite of being a sugar hound, I have adapted to decaf that is 2/3rds reduced fat milk. It tastes sweet to me now - I am grateful for that. Maybe I'll try that at other times in the day after seeing this talk.

My wife and I went on an all-in holiday in Gambia a few Christmases ago. There was filtered coffee - as much as you could drink. We had a headache and were a bit jittery for a day or so and out it down to jet-lag. Found out at holiday end that the coffee was ersatz - probably chicory or some such but tasted ok. Anyway, we came back detoxed from caffeine after decades of addiction and decided to carry on. Bought decaffeinated coffee beans and they tasted great and we have never looked back. The taste fulfils the need and the sleep is wonderful. Try decaffeinated coifed beans - you will never regret it.

Hi doc! I personally love coffee so much to the point of addiction. After I started my ketogenic diet a couple of years ago and managed to reverse my diabetes and insulin resistance I turned my attention to my adrenal fatigue. I learned in that journey that caffeine is a neurotoxin and an endocrine disruptor in that it has a negative effect on the hormonal balance especially the adrenal gland hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, so I decided to drink only decaf coffee. I've been drinking decaf for almost a year. Now I feel much better in terms of sleep cycle and stress. Recently I turned my attention to my iron deficiency which in my case is originating from low stomach acid, so I started supplementing with iron. The problem I faced was that my morning cup of coffee is definitely going to block the absorption of that iron pill which I also take in the morning. So I decided to drop that morning cup of coffee, which is my only cup of coffee. It's been now 2 weeks coffee free. I never felt any better. I'm really surprised that you say that coffee is ok when you know very well that, along with tea, it blocks the absorption of many nutrients like iron. I'm convinced that caffeine in coffee and tea is bad for health, not to mention the other constituents they contain.

Caffeine is more toxic to some than others. It's all about how efficient your liver is at making enzymes to break down the caffeine so it has minimal impact on other biochemical functions. That's the explainable reason why some people can consume copious amount of caffeine and it has minimal negative effects.

Great video. I love coffee. I’m trying to cut back though because of adrenal fatigue. The rationale is that coffee causes your adrenals to release cortisol and adrenaline, and if you have over stressed adrenals, they can burn out and stop working normally. This often shows up with sleep problems like difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Of course, your adrenals can become over stressed because of physical and emotional stresses. Coffee simply adds workload to the adrenals. Also, the brain adapts to the amount of caffeine you consume so I would love to be able to get similar dopamine benefits from coffee but with less coffee.

Listen to your own body. Robert has his own bias just like every other human and just hasn't believed the people who do badly on caffeine. Some get panic attacks from it if they are generating predisposed to getting them from stimulants - even at a low dose. Good to hear that coffee works for you. Others have quite a different experience. For me coffee delivers a rush of energy for a couple of hours followed by extreme tiredness. Also while coffee has no calories itself it destabilizes my blood sugar level which results in eating foods high in sugar. This is the last thing needed for a person trying to loose fat, obviously.

That's interesting! Even black coffee affects blood sugar? As you say destabilizes it. U sure?
@jensherrmann8202

@@tjburr1968 Yes, I am sure based on 20+ years of experience. For me drinking coffee also leads to bonking (hitting the wall) when running or cycling, a phenomenon of low blood sugar. In this situation you will eat anything around that ist high in sugar even out of a trashcan. This does not happen when not drinking coffee. There are also secondary symptoms like knee pain and diarrhea. So coffee is not for everyone.
