Yamaha XT 250 - ( Model 3Y3 ) sold between 1979 and 1990. This is Part 4 of the Yamaha XT 250 series, looking at valve clearance adjustment (valve check and adjusting).
In this episode I show you how I adjust the valves and share some tips and tricks to save you time and unnecessary dismantling of the left-hand side engine cover.
The XT 250 valve adjustment is a fairly straightforward job, and only a few basic tools are required
The Yamaha XT series will cover many different topics, from simple servicing and maintenance to more complex modifications and restoration.
By clicking the LIKE button and subscribing to the channel you are letting me know that you find the series interesting and helpful and it will encourage me to upload more XT videos. Also, if you have anything specific you would like me to cover in a video in the future…. Just let me know.
So please Subscribe and press the Bell notification button (This will help the channel grow and develop), and of course you will be notified when the next episode is uploaded.
Also, there will be a new series all about mid 80's Japanese motorbikes starting later this year. Restoration VS renovation and the whole process of restoration.
Valve clearance settings / check - adjust when cold:
Exhaust valve clearance:
0.12mm to 0.17mm
0.005" to 0.007"
Inlet valve clearance:
0.05mm to 0.10mm
0.002" to 0.004"
Thank you, Carl

XT -250 was my first bike in 1980. It was used and i was an 18yo. Never had a problem. I learnt how to ride on this bike. Good memories. 👍😮

Really well done video. I have a 1983 XT250, that was the last year the 3y3 was sold in the states. I am sure you are aware that Yamaha released a TSB regarding low oil flow issues to the head on these engines. The fix was a roll pin inserted into the crankshaft. You say that particular bike is a 1988 and maybe by then they had fixed that issue at the factory. My original XT250 engine definitely has top end damage from poor lubrication. However I put an SR250 engine in the bike and did the roll pin mod and so far so good. Cheers from the USA!

Hi Motoshark, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and say hello, I enjoy working on these older motorbikes and making videos about them, but very few viewers are interested, which is a shame. Thank you for the information on the roll-pin, I was aware but its great you share it here so other owners can read about it too. Greetings from Germany Kindest Regards Carl 👍

@@justthewayitis Carl, thank you for the response. Yes it is a shame that these bikes don't generate more views. My XT250 Videos dont get much attention at all either. My bike certainly isn't as nice as the unit you had in your videos but it gets ridden often and ridden hard and out away wet, unrestored and still kicking. I did cheat somewhat and use the SR250 engine to gain E-start and 12V. Also transplanted a 1988 RM250 front fork to gain a disk brake and better suspension, iI shortened the travel to match the XT's original travel. Built some custom racks to carry stuff and do some dual sporting. Fits my riding style just fine. The bike is remarkably capable. Cheers again!

Back to the 80's Carl. I worked on those bikes a lot. Funny to see that it is still running. By the way, remove your rings on your fingers while working.

Hi Edward, yes thank you, I normally do. Back to the 80’s indeed, great little bikes and simple to work on, and also great for helping the younger generation understand how a basic motorbike operates. Best wishes Carl

Hi Carl, always a bit of an art getting the lock nut just right! Would you say that clearances always reduce over time on inlet and exhaust? Best wishes from `stickig` Wiesbaden, Nick

Hi Nick , it’s the same here 😞 In general yes they get smaller and reduce, I’ve not checked the GS yet but I imagine it’s the same Greetings 😇

Excellent video as always Carl. I really enjoy these maintenance videos, it's nice to see how others go about doing these things. I do have a question for you. On the R1250 front brake, is there an adjustment that can be done to get the brake lever to engage the brakes sooner in the travel? I know there needs to be a bit of free play, I feel like mine has too much or at least too much for my liking. I've looked for an exploded view of the front brake lever and master cylinder to see if there is anything I can do, but haven't found one. I did have the front calipers replaced with Brembo's recently and I assume the dealership bleed the brakes correctly. They did put the OEM Brembo pads in and I'm waiting for the SP and SA pads to arrive to replace those, but I don't see that making much of a difference in when the lever starts engaging the brakes during the squeeze. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Correy , I’m not aware of any adjustments that you can make, other than checking the front brake circuit for air, which BMW probably did when they changed the calipers, but it might be worth checking. Their is a slight (lever travel) difference between the Hayes and Brembo setup, and the Brembo set up does have more travel. Carl

@justthewayitis thanks for the reply. I thought as much. Looking at where the lever attaches to the master cylinder there's a stud with what looks like a threaded shaft going through with a hex head. Wasn't sure if that could be turned or not to adjust when the brakes start engaging when the lever is squeezed. Guess it's something I need to get used to coming from more track oriented bikes.
