#51 Ishite-ji
●About this temple
The origin of this famous temple, which has one of the best temple treasures and cultural properties in the Shikoku sacred sites, dates back to the 5th year of Jinki (728), when Ochi Tamazumi, the governor of Iyo, built the temple as a dojo for the protection of the nation at the request of Emperor Shomu.
The main image of Yakushi Nyorai was opened by Gyoki in the following year, 729, and the name of the temple was changed to Anyoji.
There is an anecdote about how Anyo-ji Temple became Ishite-dera Temple.
One day, Emon Saburo, a greedy landowner who behaved in a heartless way towards Kobo Daishi, tried to change his ways and then set out on a pilgrimage in search of Daishi, but he fell ill without being able to meet Daishi.
It is said that the master appeared at Emon Saburo's bedside and made him hold a stone inscribed with ``Emon Saburo'' in his hand.
After that, a second son was born to the Kono clan, the lord of this land, but for some reason the baby did not open his arms.
Mr. Kono, who was curious, prayed to Anyoji Temple, and a stone with the word "Emon Saburo" written on it came out from his eldest son's open hand.
The stone was placed in the temple, and from this time on, the temple was renamed Ishite-dera.
●Point to watch around
・Niomon - Built by Michitsugu Kono, it is designated as a national treasure, and the statue of Nio is large at 2.5 meters.
In addition, the main hall and three-storied pagoda built in the late Kamakura period, the bell tower built in 1333, the bronze bell built in 1251, the Goma-do hall built in the early Muromachi period, and the stone five-ring tower built in 1190. Both are designated as important cultural properties.
The main hall is a magnificent tile-roofed building with a majestic 5-room, four-sided hip-main building.
・Three-storied pagoda - A Japanese-style building with a tiled roof. Inside the pagoda, statues of the eight ancestors of Shingon are depicted.
・Treasure Hall - Approximately 100 items from over 1,100 temple treasures are on display at any given time, including pebbles associated with the shrine.
・Kari Teibo Tendo Hall - Kishimojin, the goddess of protection for children, is enshrined inside and is believed to pray for safe childbirth.
There are pebbles piled up in front of the hall because pregnant women take the stones in front of the hall and return them in two after giving birth safely.
・Dogo Onsen Main Building - A nearby symbol of Ehime
This hot spring has been loved by locals and tourists for over 100 years and is the first public bath to be designated as an important cultural property.
・Matsuyama Castle This is one of the world's most famous castles, one of Japan's three major continuous-style Hirayama castles. It was built by Yoshiaki Kato in 1602 and flourished as a castle with 1.5 million koku of Matsudaira.
The castle tower offers a 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea and Mt. Ishizuchi, making it a must-visit spot even if you are not a history buff.
