#55 Nanko-bo
●About this temple
Of all the sacred sites in Shikoku, Nankobo is the only one that has the word ``bo'' in it.
It used to be adjacent to Betsugu Oyamazumi Shrine, and until the early Meiji era it was said to have been the temple of Oyamagi Shrine, and its origins date back 1300 years.
Tamazumi, the younger brother of Ochi Tamaki, the founder of the Kono clan, received the imperial request of Emperor Bunmu and prayed to the Oyamazumi Myojin Shrine on Omishima Island, and built 24 temples as a horaku hall.
However, since it was impossible to visit the shrine without crossing the sea, in the 5th year of Wado (712), the annex shrine was moved to Hiyoshi Village, Ochi District, and at the same time eight temples, including Nankobo, were moved as Bettoin Temple.
However, during the Tensho era (1573-1592), eight temples were burnt down by the Chosokabe clan's military fire that swept across Iyo, and the Kono clan, a descendant of the Ochi clan, also perished. It is said that it was rebuilt as a Bettoji temple of Kyo Shrine.
During the Edo period, Yakushido was rebuilt as a place of prayer for Todo Takatora.
During the Meiji period, during the Haibutsu-kishaku movement, the principal images of Daitsuchi Shonyorai and the Sixteen Great Princes were returned to Yakushi-do, and it became an independent temple; however, in the great air raids of 1945, all but Daishi-do and Konpira-do were destroyed. buildings were burnt down
The current main hall was rebuilt after the war.
