●About this temple
Yasaka-dera Temple is closely associated with the legend of Uemon Saburo, the founder of the pilgrimage.The temple is said to have been founded by Yaku Gyoja Shokaku, the founder of Shugendo, and has a history of 300 years.In the first year of the Asuka period (the first year of the Taiho era), the temple was built by the provincial governor of Iyo, Prince Ochi Tamaoki, at the request of Emperor Monmu (reigned 697-707).The name of the temple derives from the eight slopes it was built on, but it also derives from the increasingly prosperous "Iyasaka" (Yasaka).Kobo-Daishi practiced Buddhism at this temple in 815, when it was rebuilt from ruin and designated as a sacred site.The principal image of the seated Amida Nyorai is said to be the work of Genshin Monk Genshin (942-1017), who laid the logical foundation of Pure Land Buddhism.Later, the temple became a fundamental center of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) by enshrining a branch spirit of Kumano Gongen and the Twelve Shrines Gongen from Kishu, and was also called "Kumano Yasaka-ji Temple.At that time, the temple had 12 monks and 48 branch temples within its precincts and prospered so much that it had its own army of monks, but it was destroyed by fire.The temple was once the site of a palace where the Twelve Deities of Kumano and the Kumano Daigongen of Kishu were enshrined. The main hall, Daishi-do hall, Gongendo hall, and bell tower are all located on the site, creating the atmosphere of a quiet village temple.In the basement of the main hall, about 8,000 Amida statues dedicated by believers from all over Japan are enshrined.

Enma HallLocated between the main hall and the Daishi Hall. The hall depicts the beautiful Pure Land in Paradise, and the road of hungry ghosts, the road of animals, the road of Shura, and the road of Shura in Hell.The hand of salvationOn the left side of the 10th step from the bottom of the stone steps leading up to the main hall. It is said to be the hand of "salvation that removes nine difficulties" and is said to be effective for foot and eye ailments.Houkouin-to (pagoda)A stone pagoda built in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), it is a temple treasure located in the garden in front of the Kori.Fudosanzon (Iyasaka Fudoson)Every year on April 29, ascetic practitioners from all over Japan gather to perform the "Shiba-do Dai Goma Ku Hisei Sanmai Hidari Shugyo" (Great Gomamatu Ceremony with Shiba Lamps).

第４７番札所 八坂寺
●寺の歴史/縁起
浄瑠璃寺から北へ約1キロと近い八坂寺との間は、田園のゆるやかな曲がり道をたどる遍路道「四国のみち」がある。遍路の元祖といわれる右衛門三郎の伝説との縁も深い。修験道の開祖・役行者小角が開基と伝えられるから、1,300年の歴史を有する古い寺である。寺は山の中腹にあり、飛鳥時代の大宝元年、文武天皇（在位697～707）の勅願により伊予の国司、越智玉興公が堂塔を建立した。このとき、8ヶ所の坂道を切り開いて創建したことから寺名とし、また、ますます栄える「いやさか（八坂）」にも由来する。
弘法大師がこの寺で修法したのは百余年後の弘仁6年（815）、荒廃した寺を再興して霊場と定めた。本尊の阿弥陀如来坐像は、浄土教の論理的な基礎を築いた恵心僧都源信（942～1017）の作と伝えられる。その後、紀州から熊野権現の分霊や十二社権現を奉祀して修験道の根本道場となり、「熊野八坂寺」とも呼ばれるようになった。このころは境内に12坊、末寺が48ヶ寺と隆盛をきわめ、僧兵を抱えるほど栄えた。だが、天正年間の兵火で焼失したのが皮切りとなり、再興と火災が重なって末寺もほとんどなくなり、寺の規模は縮小の一途をたどった。現在、寺のある場所は、十二社権現と紀州の熊野大権現が祀られていた宮跡で、本堂、大師堂をはじめ権現堂、鐘楼などが建ちならび、静閑な里寺の雰囲気を漂わせている。本堂の地下室には、全国の信者から奉納された阿弥陀尊が約8,000祀られている。
●見どころ
閻魔堂（えんまどう）
本堂と大師堂の間。「極楽の途」「地獄の途」があり、極楽には美しい浄土が、地獄には餓鬼道、畜生道、修羅道などが描かれている。
救いの手
本堂にあがる石段の下から10段目の左側。「九難を去る救い」の手とされ、足や目の病に効験ある話が伝わる。
宝筺印塔（ほうきょういんとう）
鎌倉時代の石造層塔で、庫裏前の庭園にある寺宝。
不動三尊（いやさか不動尊）
毎年4月29日に全国より修験者を集め、柴燈大護摩供火生三昧火渡り修行を行っている。
