Sanjeev Sanyal is a noted historian and economist turned writer who has written seven books on India’s history, geography and freedom struggle. His latest book, Revolutionaries: The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom, talks about the story of armed resistance which wasn’t individual heroism as it has been portrayed in our history books, but was part of a wider movement towards colonial occupation. Sanjeev is a recipient of an Eisenhower fellowship, has been named young global leader by WEF and is a visiting scholar at Oxford University and an adjunct fellow at National University of Singapore. Currently, Sanyal serves as a member of the economic advisory council to the Prime Minister of India. In this edition of Podcast with Smita Prakash, author-cum-economist talks about armed resistance against the British, his family’s contribution to the freedom struggle, Savarakar, the source of the Khalistani movement and how collaborators and the Nehruvian Congress wiped out the actual history of the Revolutionaries.

I am Maharashtrian Brahmin. My grandmother used to tell the stories of these riots after the Gandhi assassination. Brahmins were dragged out and burned their houses thereafter. My grandmother and their family survived only because her father was a doctor and savior for everyone not just Brahmins but for all. This horrific incident she experienced in Satara, but as per her it has happened in many other places also.

I am Maharashtrian Brahmin. My mother survived because her neighbours saved her, a four year child. My father and uncle in their early twenties were jailed by Nehruvian Congrees because they were Maharashtrian Brahmin and part of the revolutionary movement. I grew up hearing stories of true Indian heros of the freedom movement and stories of partition. I educated in English school but at home I was consciously introduced to Veer Savarkar's literature and thougts. I was blessed but wish more Indians especially the kids and youth are introduced to Veer Savarkar, the true Nationalist and his ideology.

A rare aspect of Sanjeev Sanyal's character I noticed here is that he is such a fantastic and flamboyant speaker that he hardly ever minds or takes umbrage with interruptions and interjections (often distracting, often topic-changing ones) of the interviewer, rather cares to politely and satisfyingly but briefly answer that and then returns to his previous talking point so smoothly and gracefully by somehow merging his talking point with the interruption that even the audiences start not to bother about those interruptions and instead find them to be enhancing the scope of entire discussion. Glad to know that he is a trained black belt in Taekowondo.

My grandfather was in the Hindu Mahasabha with Savarkar. After the Gandhi vadh, a congress mob descended on our ancestral home in the Dadar Portuguese Church area. My father (now deceased) tells the story of how he, armed with an axe, and four of his friends, all armed with swords stood in front our house daring the goons to make a move. Nobody did. All they could attack were defenseless people

If I'm not wrong, Mohini Mills was still in business in the late 70s and early 80s, and it used to produce very fine quality dhotis that my father loved!

About the genocides in India, Mumbai does not know about them but the locations where they happened not just know but the entire community marks it in someway. In North-Western Karnataka, all of it, Diwali is not celebrated even today because tipu murdered thousands who did not convert. We still find large number of skulls while excavating land in these region. There are multiple such examples across India. Promise you North has the most horror stories.

Prashant, I belong to the trader community, being trader we were considered closer to brahmins, but segregated by brahmins in Konkan. Nevertheless, my great great grandfather had own farming rice paddy land. His house was set on fire by GANDHIANS. I guess as traders weren’t Gandhian enough, and brahmins were hated by that section of people. Marathas. Being the only survivor of that incident, he hid in bushes and they went to nearby village for refuge to relatives. He got basic education, but was indebted to the family. Travelled to Mumbai at the age of 16, worked as lipik in small offices. A local wealthy fisherman ( yes fishermen were wealthy those days, they had control on economy) now they are cornered and ignored. That man helped him set the business. The bottom line is, many survived the atrocities of Gandhian politics. They were not peaceful, they were not morally better. He was no saint, and more evil than British for us. That’s why in my family we say, British ARE better than Gandhi.

@@somnathbose7455 Reference links will not be of much consequence. Vikram Sampath documents it in his biography of Savarkar. When Savarkar was sent to prison, his wife was generally shunned from society because she was regarded as the wife of a criminal. The family lived in penury.

I am really surprised when I listen that we didn't know real history, we in Maharashtra know from 60s (from my childhood) about all the revolutioneries, most of the great kingdoms of India etc. Even in our homes books other than published by then govt. were collected and even in libraries.

There’s a systematic ethnic cleansing of Hs taking place for centuries, not just butchering and dividing of clans/tribes. At least people r learning about it now. Hopefully they’ll stand up and defend themselves and preserve their heritage that their ancestors gave up their lives for.

My family from paternal side lived very closed to Netaji's bhavanipur home and I grew up listening to my grand father telling me several stories during that time..... One of which was " Netaji has promised he will be back"with so much conviction that we believed it.... My family from maternal side was Mukherjee zamindar of Ula, Bengal now called Birnagar ( which was thus named after the bravery of mukherjees) ..... One stroke of pen and we lost lands and properties because of rejecting the " Rai Bahadur" title and taking part in the revolution......I am so so sorry but this feels personal I dnt know who will read this ..... Attempted to listen to this several times... But cud not .... Really not sure what I felt.... Rage, Sad, Greatful, Disgust all at one time..... one thing for sure.... People who have gone through it doesn't like to talk about it.... I have heard many such stories .... A well established BASAK family ( holding good positions like Barrister ) came to kolkata ( only the wife with her two children) with rice, potato, few coins and gold all packed together in just 2 pillow covers. The menfolk mostly stayed back a bit more to sell of the properties.....I remember every time this woman told me this story she ended with " at that point I was not even sure whether I will see my husband again or not but I had to survive for my kids".

I am glad in past 8-10 yrs so many facts have come out. Also thankful to my mother who taught us right history and references from what she had heard fr her parents born pre-independence. I hate what Bengal is today but I am proud of the fact that I have been taught right role models and come from true strong patriotic heritage of Bengal (Baba) and Maharashtra (ma) from my parents!

OMG. I remember Sanyal Ji discussing in an interview around 2021, how US govt spent money in covid crisis vs how India govt spent money in covid crisis. He then told that US will have its consequences. He also expressed happiness about how India was able to send direct benifit to needy people, food ration along with some money, using Aadhaar & UPI. Mr. Sanyal is absolutely brilliant! What a treat to listen to him & learn about India's REAL History. For Western audiences - Congress & their collaborating allies who were so friendly to the British Rulers - were like the Vichy France in World War-2. Nehru was the Marshall Petain of India & People like Savarkar & Bose were the Charles De Gaulles of India. Except, while in France DeGaulle aligned with eventual Victors (Allies) & became a National Hero; in India it was tragically the opposite - was like Petain & his Nazi bureaucratic collaborators becoming the eventual French leaders. So sad for India. Hope the people of India learn about importance of the Naval Revolt (dont minimalise it by calling it 'mutiny'), INA Trials, Bose, Savarkar & other so-called extremist Revolutionaries. These people were the real Heroes & they loved their country & wanted Freedom so badly, way more than the Soft collaborators/ semi-revolutionaries like Nehru.
