Ep. #690 FlexRadio 6600M ~ Is it really that much better than a cheaper radio?

The answer may surprise you. There are some good options out there that will help you cut through the noise and they don't require a $5000 radio. Someone on the Flex forum was bashing the Flex Noise Blanker, and said their 7300 was better, so I put that to the test. Also I talk more about the MFJ 1026 noise canceler. I completely believe that if you have that, you are going to pretty much do as well as some of the best noise blankers out there and it can work with any radio.

If cost is an issue buy the Flex 6400, or even better buy a CPO Flex. I went with the CPO 6500, an older version of the 6600, I also bought a CPO Maestro vers. A, both the CPO 6500 & Maestro were just a tad over $3000. Works just as well as the 6600M you tried at a huge savings. Love it, beats all my other radios I’ve used in the past.

Cost is not an issue for me, that's why I am keeping the radio, but my reason for keeping it is not because it hears any better then my 891 as it really does not when you have S5+ noise. Not when you have other tools that do better at removing noise like the mfj 1026 - but if someone Can only afford a $1000 radio like the 7300, then thats the point of this video. Buy the 7300 and work on your antenna situation and you will be just as well off as far as beating the noise. But yes. your point is valid. If a ft891 or an ic7300, when used with a mfj-1026 are going to do just as well as or better than a flexradio 6600, standing by its self. The same would hold true that an older flex would do just as well also. Point being no need to drool over any of the $$$$$ radios if you have S5+ and are thinking they will help you with the noise, when a $ radio will do

I liked your casual presentation. Good gut feel and honest. I am in the market for a smaller ...almost a pacifier! But I suspect many others have gotten good repair response. This indeed has been the case with my ICOM radios (Kirkland WA USA repair center). Thank you for your video!!

EXCELLENT assessment. Your review has helped me decide with respect to the Flex. I look forward to your next video on this subject!

thanks. i really do like the flex, but to be honest if you get all your antenna stuff in order and get the mfj noise canceler, you pretty much will be fine with any radio. I love the feature the flex has, i love how clean the display looks, i love the fact that the UI on the 6600m is simple but gets the job done completely. I love how the networking works vs USB. but my original goal with buying the flex was noise reduction, and i found out quickly that the solutions i already had in place did the job just as well. In the end the flex won me over because of technical features, not because of receiver quality.

Hm...lot of $$ for a NOISE CANCELLER!!!! Awlful lot of ad lib/off-the-wall and so little MEAT in this videio. Appreciate the candor but repetitious. ANyhoo....it is clear you like the noise canceller. Thank you for your thoughts though!

thanks for watching, I love both the w6lvp and the mfj1026 with the mini whip and both setups end up costing around the same amount of money. the alternative is not being able to hear anything but noise, because even the $5000 flexradio can't get rid of it. so, by comparison, $250 for the noise canceler is cheap. Again don't get me wrong I do love the flex radio but I just wanted people to know by comparison if they are just wanting to get rid of noise, spending $5000 on radio is not the right direction

I don't think you quite understand what the Noise Blanker is for.
@Thejohnnyoshow
@Thejohnnyoshow 3 года назад
yeah I do "A noise blanker is a device that detects pulses and blocks the signal during the time of each pulse". How the 891 does it is very basic, and better radios have noise blankers that do not remove all the signal on every pulse. so yes the 891 noise blanker does what a noise blanker is supposed to do, that does not mean that it does not suck compared to other radios, and as far as I'm concerned the noise blanker on the 891 is worthless, it either removes nothing or it removes so much its pointless. because it just cuts off all signal. the noise blanker on the flex for example, when it can do it, removes the pulses but the signal you want to hear is still there. not choppy at all, unlike the 891 that's just choppy dead spots for every pulse
