Thank you. This is the ONLY video I've found that shows me how to sharpen the blade of a violin plane.

Thank you Ben. Even though I've been doing this kind of thing for a long time, I always pick up something new and helpful.

Ben, you could try using these cheap hobby scalpel blade holders made from aluminium with a crosscut collet on the end to hold small blades. You may have to cut the slots to hold slightly thicker blades but it's worth a go! I've used them before. All I need now is some decent ceramic stones!

Can you sharpen mechanical pencil sharpener blades?
@juanrivero8

There are tools called "cutter and die" grinders. Used by machine shops. They will sharpen end mills, no mean achievement. They use diamond wheels. They are fearfully expensive even when made in China. But they have more angle adjustment than a politician, and I would love to have one. In my shop. In the UK you can buy a kit for a grinder called the "Quorn" at a semi-reasonable price but you do need at least an engineer's lathe to build it. In the meantime I will look out for a ring vise, or build one myself, and cut up little pieces of wood. You have just saved me a lot of time and trouble. Thank you!

What a great tutorial. Thank you. Can you please tell me how to sharpen scissors. I am a sewer/quilter and use my scissors constantly. Is there a way I can sharpen them; especially the little ones. Thank you in advance

for those really small blades, uses a razor handle that the blade slides in a Colet style end and you twist it to tighten the blade in, think they are called a hobby knife. you can find them at most places you buy car model kits and such.

My pleasure Marc, enjoy :) but then I know you have the shapton stones from www.niwaki.com so the process simply has to be enjoyable :)

Use "sealing wax", it's much tougher than other waxes. That what is used for polishing precious stones.

What about glueing the small blades to the holding stick / tool with hot melt glue?

Ben, try the new Lie-Nielsen honing guide with jaws for short blades, it's excellent.

Ah, the joy of frustration :-) Tiny blades are fiddly, but also require less work, so fingers can be surprisingly sufficient. One just needs to be much more mindful about angles and directions.

A couple of things that popped into my mind whilst watching this, Carp fishermen now sharpen their hooks using a little clamp which might be useful, and also how about a fly tying vice?

Would it not be easier to take the sharpening system to the blade rather than trying to take the blade to the sharpening system?... For example clamping the tiny blade and then sharpening it with a small sharpening stone such as the EZ Lap diamond paddles.
@doktorwer
@doktorwer 8 лет назад
Could you also just use a nice pair of vise grips to hold it and sharpen away?
@allanmck
@allanmck 8 лет назад
+doktorwer Exactly what I was going to suggest. I have a small needle nosed vise grip I use for fiddly bits on my lawn mower which would suit these blades.

Nice one Ben! Is there any chance you could do a video on sharpening hand router blades? I have a No. 071 Record router plane, and trying to sharpen those blades is an awkward and unforgiving task.!
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 8 лет назад
I have one in need of refurbishment and I will certainly film the process.. Could you use a jig somehow? I haven't given them very much thought tbh.
@Darrenmccarthymusica
@Darrenmccarthymusica 8 лет назад
That would be great, i look forward to seeing that! I have seen people sharpening them on the edge of a table so the shaft of the blade can over-hang the edge, but trying to sharpen them like that is awkward and difficult. I've never seen a jig for them, but might be worth looking in to!

now you need to sharpen 6 tools that you used to sharpen the tiny blade, the problem is when you sharpen these blades, you would need more tools to do so and making them blunt, so then you will need to sharpen 20 and thing gets out of hand all for sharpening the little blade..

Hey Ben, I just watched your whole series of Sharpening Masterclass (besides the 3M Film) Where is the basic Waterstone video? No machine, just Waterstones. Talking about different types, pro/cons of combined stones, keeping them wet or just soaking them shortly before sharpening from different stones, keeping the water bath clean, smelly or not? If there is already a video just for basic waterstones, it should be in this playlist. In the Introduction video you talk about sharpening gouges as well. The video I found is from back in the shed days where you show the technique you learned from your violin building master. I think it may be time for an update after 6 years, since you learned a lot more about sharpening since then. Do you still use the same technique?
