Thank you for this. I'm an artist and use my exacto knife, which I've had for almost 30yrs, to cut my mats dozens of time a week. This technique has given new life to blades I thought were a lost cause lol. Being on a budget, I really appreciate this!

You are most welcome and thanks for the comment. I think I'm going to use a much higher grit paper next time to see if it works better. I had a poster state that using a leather strop with some sharpening compound works even better so when I have the time I'll try that as well and if it does a better job I'll post how I did it. Good luck sharpening those blades and I'll see you in the Air!

Just use a leather strop and some compound. It will make them scalpel sharp. Only use the sand paper if you nick the blade.

That's a very good tip David! Thank you for that. I had another comment with the same suggestion. I'm going to have to get a leather strop and some sharpening compound and start using that process. You just don't see that used much anymore but it certainly worked for barbers once upon a time ;-)

I want to try this with pencil sharpener blades too... they want between c. .70c & $1.05 per blade... almost 3-4 times the price of an exacto blade... and I saw recommendation to use a different sharpener every project. Wow, that would be a real waste. I'm about to take a drawing class with pencil types that really wear blades, so I appreciate this video. I also love your idea of spray gluing sandpaper onto a board strip... which can also be used to sharpen pastel & charcoal pencils.

Can you show me how a person can put the blade in the knife please. I'm haveing trouble with it being loose ? Thank you so much.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 2 года назад
Hi Connie! If your exacto knife is like mine, it has that knurled section just below the blade. That rotates to tighten and loosen the blade. The blade should slide in one of the two slots at the top and seat fully. Then just rotate the knurled section until the blade is tight.

Hi Connie! The method I showed was using a very high grit sandpaper. I've not tried using a Leather Strope but there are a lot of videos on the subject. They should explain the best type of leather to use as well as the type of polishing or sharpening compound to use.

Nicole, I'm not familiar with Cricut Blades but as long as you have a way of holding the blade at an angle for sharpening I don't see why it wouldn't work with those Blades as well.

Bro how are you going through that many blades? I make strong and light weight paper swords, which is way more stronger than foam core board. It takes days to finish a paper sword, I only need one blade, and sometimes I reuse the same blade from my previous project.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
Hi Christian! Hmmm....before I started sharpening the blades, I would use at least (2) blades cutting out all the parts to build the aircraft. I do use a cutting mat when cutting out parts from Adam's Readi Board. I use the blade until it starts snagging the paper on the foam, then I know it's time to sharpen the blade. Why do you think yours last so long compared to mine? I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to blades ;-)
@christiandavies4798
@christiandavies4798 3 года назад
@@GroundControlRC I'm not sure why the blade's get dull so quick, It might be the cutting mat. I use a plastic cutting board, and the only thing that always happens the my blade is it break's the tip. I watch Returacan and that guy always goes through alot of blade's.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
@@christiandavies4798 , Hi Christian! You may be right, I'll have to try some different material under the foam and see what leaves the blade sharp for the longest period of time. I'll try a plastic cutting board/sheet as well. Thanks for the info and have a Happy Holiday ;-) See you in the Air!

A good Arkansas hard stone will give you an excellent edge. I used them a lot in various sizes as a tool & die machinist. For a super-sharp edge: www.bestsharpeningstones.com/product_details.php?category_name=Arkansas%20Sharpening%20Stones&product_id=74 ( I used "HARD" for my machinist needs). Gabriel, I have never used a leather strop so I did not consider it. I'm old enough that I have watched people use them before ;-) It looks like it requires some skill.
@gabrielglouw3589
@gabrielglouw3589 5 лет назад
Ground Control RC, I do quite a bit of sharpening on my various knives. A piece of leather glued to a piece of wood like you did with that sandpaper is all you need. You will use the exact same technique. The leather requires very little prep. Stropping is very underrated as a sharpening method. If you wish I can post a link to how to prepare a piece of leather for stropping. In my opinion 240 and 400 seems like a very high grit for something as comparatively delicate as a exacto knife blade. I use grits of that caliber to repair damaged edges on knives. I routinely use 1000 grit stones for sharpening knives that don’t need repair. Most of the time I actually use a ceramic rod or a strop to sharpen, breaking out stones only rarely. Forgive my rambling, I’m just curious to see you try a strop because I’m almost positive you’ll have better results once you get the hang of it.

Ground Control RC, a nice thick piece of veg tan leather. Watch the video in the link and do it just like that. Then just go look a stropping compounds and see what you like. They come cheap and expensive. Don’t get the expensive. They’re overrated.

None of the ‘How To’ videos I’ve seen seem to address sharpening or restoring one of the most important features of an X-acto knife, that being the tip of the blade. If simply having a decent edge were the issue, most any knife would suffice. More often, precision work with the tip of an X-acto blade is required and the reason why you’re using a hobby knife in the first place. Dragging the edge of the blade towards you fifteen times isn’t going to restore sharpness to the broken tip on a blade unless it’s a tip with a curved point you’re after. I can’t recommend sharpening these #11 blades as described unless you do not need the tip to perform as it will when it’s new. #16 blades stand a better chance of being correctly refurbished because of their more acutely angled tip but still require more work, and attention paid to the angles used than described in this video. Sorry, just being honest based on my own experiences with using and sharpening these type of blades.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
No worries David! I'm not an expert at sharpening blades, I just pass on the information that works for me. I use X-acto blades to cut foam for building aircraft. When I drag the edge of the blade toward me at a proper angle it sharpens the blade from edge to tip. I always start my cuts with the tip and the blade angled in the direction of the cut. This method works for how I use the blade and I do get the tip sharp as well. Perhaps using a strop will work better for you.
