You triggered some wonderful memories. We also renovated an old house which took us 11 years. It was a labor of love. During this time we ( well I was really just the helper, he was the brains) built a pie chest, a blanket chest (with cedar interior) a TV Table and matching end table. The tables were made of oak with opaque black stain and rose wood tops. We have moved from our old home but still enjoy all the things we built in that cold cold Chicago garage. We found a wood burning stove helped a lot. Love the work you have done on your house and the bedroom came our beautifully. I hope your family enjoys their visit.
That's great that you were able to build some nice furniture! It's getting to be a lost art. Even though you were the helper, it certainly went better with you there, yes?
Cedar smells amazing forever! I have this amazing Art Deco dresser that I RESCUED on the side of the road - and that first three-part segmented first drawer graces me with this strong and abundant aroma (it may be cherry wood? Or multiple wood types). Each and every time. It never runs out of fragrance. Love it so much. It needs SOME work. But mostly aesthetically. It has wheels! Vintage wheels!! And…some are broken. But a minor inconvenience quicker and easier than not able to be fixed. Can’t wait to see the finished product and the wood finish you decide to use.
What a lovely guest bedroom! It was so thoughtful to add the soft lights over the bed, and the reading material on the bookshelf. Very comfy and cozy. I hope you enjoy your visitors.
Nice job on the spare bedroom. Cedar chest, too. Totally get your point on how the curtains would collect dust, if they went to the floor. Dust everywhere in these old houses, right? We'd put a robot vacuum on every floor if it was in the budget...
Thanks for sharing all the information about cutting the wood safely. I remember my mom's cedar chest. She kept all of our winter clothes in there I love to take things out in the fall. Cedar smell brings back good Memories.💕💕😊
Nice job explaining the difference between the two machines, but watching what you had to do and explaining the concept was too much for me. Now I know why I don't do any kind of wood working. The guest bedroom now just needs a couple of paintings to make it feel like home. On the other hand, perhaps you don't want it to feel like home so guests don't homestead. 😉
The bedroom looks lovely! The curtains turned out so nice. You did a wonderful job decorating. Thank you too for the wood cutting explanation. A lot goes into that doesn't it? I'm looking forward to seeing the blanket box completed. It's looking good!
Is Jeannie going to line the inside with some beautiful light & airy material? It's going to be so pretty. When I graduated high school in 1978 a local furniture store gave evrey senior a small jewelry type box that was 100% red cedar and it still smells lovely today.
Totally forgot about this! I graduated in 1976 and we also each received a small Lane cedar chest.I treasured it for years but don’t remember what happened to it.(downsized twice)🥰
I didn't mean floor length drapes, I meant if you tie back to make a little bit longer so when you pull back they are below window seal. They look good just for warmth, is the reason I said that.
Hi, Mike and Jeanie! Your guest room looks fantastic, and I hope your guest(s) enjoy their visit. It's always nice to visit the workshop room and learn more about woodworking too. Fresh-sawn cedar must smell amazing ❤
What a welcoming guest room, Jeanie! Your company will feel so comfortable and at home there! And, Mike, thanks for the detailed demo of the jointer and planer and how they work together. The blanket chest project is coming along!
I can almost smell that cedar. Tip for you. Attach a piece of lumber to the miter gauge that extends to the end of the saw table, to the left of the rip fence. That way, when making a cut on end grain like you did, the miter gauge will give some better stability to the work as you move through the blade.
That cedar was so pretty. It's a shame it's on the bottom and won't be seen. But you'll smell it. When i saw the gap in the boards, i was excited like a kid in class. I knew why from the last weeks episode. 👋🤣 The guest room looks so cozy. I'm sure it will be enjoyed by your visitors. Have a fantastic week. ❤️🤍💙
Jeanie, the guest room looks sweet! I know your guests will enjoy it! Mike, thanks for the clarification on the planer and the jointer. I think I understand the difference better now. I felt like I could smell that cedar wood right through the TV. Love that smell! That’s going to make a really nice piece! Just wondering, could the rabbit joint be cut with a router? Keep warm! Best, Jan
Hi Jan! Yes, a router could cut a rabbet joint, but it would be best to have a router table. Our table saw has a place to mount a router, but it's never worked well.
Lovely guest bedroom. Did you make the quilt Jeannie? Goes well with the curtains. When I’m wallpapering I cover my dining table with Saran wrap and use the table as a pasting table. I don’t have a proper pasting table so I used what I have. It’s so much easier to clean up using the wrap as I don’t have to scrub a table clean. Just pull it off and discard. It works for me. The blanket box is going to smell lovely. Mmmmmm. ❤ love it.
I just wanted to pop on and say "Hello." I haven't commented in awhile. Been busy. But I do watch your videos. Who's the visitor that's coming? Did I miss that info or is it secret? I like your haircut Mike. You were needing one. lol. I love your sweater, Jeannie. How's the cactus? Is it surviving the cold or did you bring it indoors? Take care. Talk soon. Belle in AZ. 😊
Hi Belle! The cactus got promoted to an outdoor plant and they are doing very well. They really thrive in this climate and we never water it. Yes I was getting a bit shaggy! :-)
How did you do the lights on the bed frame? I hope you made a video of the build. There's 2 doors in the bedroom. One on each side of the fireplace. I'm assuming one leads back out into the hallway but where does the other door go to?
