Yes, almost an hour of me stumbling through my own version of 'Junkyard Gold' here in New Zealand, at the world-famous Horopito Motors. I've wanted to visit this place for a long time. Dreams do come true!
Some amazing finds, including an Austin Tasman, Simca coupe (by Bertone), Subarus, Toyotas, Hondas, Holdens, Fords, Citroens, Peugeots, Fiats, Standards and so much more!
Sadly, I did suffer major sound issues on the day, and so some of this video has a particularly poor voiceover. It was that or nothing!
Support quality videos like this at www.hubnut.org - Support and Shop options to be found there. 2020 Calendars still for sale WHILE STOCKS LAST!
Thank you.

You were wise to move your car first! Years ago I went to my local scrappy to pick up some parts for my old allegro. When I returned to the car I discovered someone trying to remove my wing mirror!

We lived in New Zealand from the end of 1975 to the end of 1977. The number of old British cars from the early 1960’s was astonishing. Visas, Victors, Veloxes, Anglias, and so on. They graduated to getting in boatloads of grey Japanese cars as there is little to no market for used cars there. Stacks and stacks of models we never saw in Australia. Horopito is close to the army camp in Waiouru on the other side of Ruapehu. The Army Museum is a treat, if you’re into that sort of thing.

I first went there with my Dad in 1965. Back then most of the stock was prewar ,some of it was even WW1 era. Mr Cole was still very much the boss then and none of those buildings were ,except the sawmill building .Which is what it was originally . In 1973 I went with some mates from Auckland .We asked mr Coles Son if they had any 1932 Ford stuff... we left with a complete chassis for $200.

I never thought I'd watch a whole hour of 'iron oxide' but what a sight! Hubnut heaven! Reminds me of going to a localish scrapyard with my dad back in the late 70's, looking for a cylinder head for his Austin A55 Cambridge, & just wandering among the cars picking small bits off & hiding them in my pockets!

Some of them are a waste of space. To far gone with twisted panels and surviving parts that could be shelved. Not that I'm complaining. Nice to see them all just suprised they wernt all bailed a few years back when the scrap prices went up.

@@pastytit you would be surprised. There was a TV series on Horipito showing people looking for parts, cars that alas looked like a waste of space still had small fittings and other useful attachments you cant find anywhere which can be re furbished or used as a template for remanufacturing.

Ian, I could waste a whole day in that place. A Toyota Cavalier! I couldn’t believe it. That was a Chevrolet Cavalier sold in Japan as a Toyota. Weird and a dismal failure due to late 90’s GM build quality. In the USA we got the early Ford Laser as the Mercury Tracer. The later Laser was our Ford Escort. The Isuzu MU was offered here as the Amigo and the small squarish Isuzu sedan as the I-Mark. The Nissan Prarrie was sold here for about 5 minutes as the Axxess. Your camera rested for a few seconds on a boring beige 1st generation Honda Odyssey without comment. I would have done the same before I came to own one recently. I now love it due to it’s airiness and manageable size compared to modern minivans. What a great roam around. Thanks for bringing us along.

The twin wiper Camry was also licensed to Holden as an Apollo model. Sadly only a single rear wiper on the wagon from memory. Wonderful room, excellent steering but lacking engine power in 4 cyl. This arrangement was carried to the end of this 'wide-body' model c.1997 and started in the preceding smaller bodied line. The Holden was a JM & JP series, the Camry SDV10 (4cyl 2.2 litre) and aaaargh the V6 version transverse and fwd. This incredible yard is one one level soul destroying...the waste ! But it is what it is...and has brilliant stock. Reminds me of a yard/yards in northern Geelong, Victoria what with all the lichen and mould and variety. The Laser hatch was available in a 4WD Ian in Aus and I think also hmm Turbo ?? Mitsubishi Australia designed a station wagon Magna...hugely capacious with outstanding load area competing with the Falcon and Commodore wagons of the day. The 2.6 four was a false economy motor however as it used very close to the far more powerful Holden and Fords of the day. Lovin' the Tercel choice, always wanted one of those...a 4WD Corolla and so so rare now. I've waffled on a bit, blame the coffee. Ahah ! The facelift version of your Falcon was the 'BA' which shared doors only externally I believe but had massive engineering upgrades particularly the DOHC 4 litre engine, known as the Barra as well as a V8. Hugely fast and powerful and the most base 6 is very powerful, economical to a scarcely believable degree too.

"Impressive" isn't the word for that place Ian - I'm not sure what is other than "gold mine" or "treasure trove", but it's more than enough to make your wallet tremble in fear. There are obviously some blanks (cars you've not seen, or know little about) so I'll try to fill in a bit (NB my Oz car knowledge is sketchy, so if anyone knows better than me by all means chime in): 1:46 - Chrysler Valiant AP5 (early 60s) 3:04 - Valiant VK(?) (Oz, mid-70s) 3:53 - Valiant (VF?) ute; (I think we're seeing a pattern here...) 4:11 - Holden HD? 5:34 - (yet another) Valiant wagon? 5:45 - I can remember lots of 2-dr A30s (my Dad had one - JTK 719) but I can't remember seeing a 2-dr A35 in Britain (in my defence I was Very Young); 6:10 Skoda 1000 - crumbs, I never knew they were exported this far away (Dad had a 110 as a loaner and later owned an Estelle); 7:15 - what on earth is that light blue small van-like thing right of frame? I've tried FIAT Multipla but it isn't that. Answers on a postcard to... 7:40 - probably a Valiant (again) AP6; 7:55 - mid-60s Falcon wagon; 10:28 - To me it's "leonie" but is that a Mitsi Galant VR4(?) These had awd and (I think) 4WS. Plus bonus MR2; 12:01 - "Scrapyards are dangerous places". Ones like this especially. 12:43 - Oz gots lots of these vans a while ago. They had M-B engines (and badge) but I think they were "assembled" and "styled" by SsangYong at the same time the SsangYong Musso 4WD was around. 14:48 - I've hankered after a FIAT 850 coupe for years. I know I'm odd; 15:35 - cripes, look at the condition of the original interior of that P4. People in Britain would commit all sorts of bodily harm to get their mitts on that; 16:33 - wasn't that the Hillman Husky? 21:56 - LAD-cabbed Albion/ Leyland Clydesdale (can't see the rear hubs) with possibly a 2-speed axle; 23:07 - Bedford TJ 24:47 - R12TL estate - yes please; 28:16 - it's a Toyo Crown, not a Nissan; 33:44 - series 1 Dodge Commando 35:25 - at a guess it's a Leyland Tiger Cub; 37:24 - blimey, where to start? 323 Astina, Lada, Toyo Surf; Datsun ute... 41:47 - no, it's a Nissan Pathfinder (not Terrano) - the Terrano was an ungainly narrow body 4WD thing that was also sold as a Ford (Maverick?). Unlike the Pathfinder, it didn't last long (thankfully); 43:18 - KH Ford Laser (as you say, essentially a Ford re-body of an early '90s Mazda 323). In the '80s and early '90s there was nowt wrong with a Mazda 323; 43:48 - XF Falcon; 44:25 - I do like early Sigma wagons, especially if they've got the Astron; 47:02 - Hino RG, bodywork by ...? 48:04 - facelift Mitsi Sigma 48:35 - Bedford TM and a very early one at that. The full-width cab versions got Cummins E290, R-R Eagle and - oh my oh my - Detroit 8V-92 2-stroke V8 diesels. If you ever get the chance to ride on a Denning (Oz-desgined and built) coach with either the 6V-71 or 8V-92 2-smoke diesel, take it. I promise you won't regret it. 49:27 - AU Falcon XR6 sans headlining; how disappointment; 54:25 - sold as a Daewoo Cielo(?) in Oz - unsuccessfully . 54:48 - neither did I (let alone sold in NZ) Much like yourself Ian, I seem to have wandered off the plot a bit. I do apologise.

Just amazing seeing these cars for better or worse and ashame that more could not be saved. This used to be a common site all over the UK, you could easily wile away a few hours and pick up some bargain parts too. May they rust in peace. Thanks Ian.
