Well, I can sleep better now knowing the hardest part of the cabin build is in position. This ridge pole was hoisted up about 22' from the ground. A bit sketchy at times but that's part of the excitement. Hope you enjoy it.
Special thanks to Lane for keeping the jokes flowing and helping me out.

Getting that tripod sorted was fun especially finding the perfect piece to prop up, that was so funny. But I got a bit distracted by your gorgeous baby. But you got it done, well done guys, you got it done, communication is all, as well as a bit of brute strength, all admiration. Take care and stay 🌷👍

Hi Justin. This is Beth, Albany NY. I’m an interior decorator and archaeologist. Congratulations on getting that monster beam up. Was thinking about your last episode and your staircase placement. Trying to figure out a way for you to keep your matching second window. New placement suggestion: as you go up the staircase, you’re facing the interior of the cabin. That is, the lowest stair is a few feet away from your side wall, and as you climb up into loft, when you step onto the loft floor, you’re facing into the room. Snug those stairs up against the interior post, and you’ll still have a small walkway, to the staircase, in front of the window. Heck, it seems redundant to have two ways to approach the staircase. With the narrow staircase, you will have room for a little window seat/wood storage. And I think that if you reverse the direction of your staircase, as I have suggested, it may block the window a little bit less, also. How? Not 100% sure if I’m correct, but here’s a thought experiment. Picture yourself sitting in a chair, against the wall, next to the fireplace. Now look to your right, there’s the window. My proposed staircase orientation might allow the chair-sitter to see out the window better. My orientation: You may lose a little bit more floor space on the second story, but I bet you will appreciate the second window more. Cabins tend to be dark. Just saw a couple in Alaska start seedlings in front of their window. Their shelving is temporary, it’s only up in the early spring. Also, by orienting the staircase as I suggested, you’re almost creating another room/nook. You can cozy up on the window seat and use the ladder as an “end table,” a place to put a drink. And if you hang up coats, etc. under the staircase, with my orientation, the chair sitter’s view, through the window, won’t be blocked by the clothing. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your detailed thoughts. I'll consider them, but since the full front of the cabin is all windows I'm not that heartbroken about blocking on in. I think I'll do some form of a spiral staircase.

Hi Trustin, well, it was fun to watch and listen to you both, and also great to see the baby shots and a somewhat distant view of Catlin, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't have a real good chuckle several times while watching this video, and even hold onto my head on a few occasions. My problem is that most of my working life revolved around moving heavy items into various places at heights and in often difficult situations, and without meaning any disrespect whatsoever for the efforts that you guys put in, for me, you sure made hard work of it for yourselves by overthinking as you worked, and by not thinking the project right through and getting it clear in your heads on what you were going to do before you started. In mitigation for my rudeness, if it came down to me trying to deal with the details that you excel at with your woodworking, I would be hacking lumps out and really struggling to find the patience that you display, so, yes, there are always horses for courses, and no I am not doing a video of me trying to trim a log just so that you can chuckle at my efforts. I only want to note that in the end, you got there, by hook or by crook, with every fibre straining and aching, and it is the getting there safely and in one piece that really counts in the end, plus having a laugh or at least a good giggle along the way. Quite seriously to both of you, the dialogue was wonderful to listen to, - communication at its wildest, almost informative, almost instructive, not quite dictatorial, conveying worry, then just concern, and back to worry again, occasionally grateful, often not, sometimes, 'oh shit I want to drop the F%*0"/^ thing,' and finally, Yeh!!!! Made it!!! Men amongst men, and almost, let's do it all again just to show everyone we weren't really worried, or anywhere near to falling out with one another, or even contemplating panicking when the leg of the tripod started to move when it wasn't supposed to. Best of luck with the rest of the roof Trustin, and quite seriously, I will now stop talking like a 'know it all asshole' for a moment to say, good job done, and to add that the doing made a great video

Caitlin and cherub cheered you and Lane on for all of us! A crowning achievement guys! Now that the cabin is looking nearly habitable, inquiring minds are wondering: will there be an outhouse? how will you get water to the cabin for cooking? will there be possible solar energy? or, will the cabin be fitted with wood stove and left in its original rustic nature to enjoy?
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Caitlin and I aren't huge outhouse fans. I'm thinking we'll splurge on a Cinderella Incinerating Toilet. It's an Off-Grid solutions. No use of water. Only ash remains. No waste handling. Drinking water we will bring in for now. Solar absolutely. Also a wood stove.

Curious on the ridge pole. You simply screwed it into place and not a mortise….will the screw be enough load bearing?
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Great question. Yeah? Choose to just screw it instead of the mortise and tenon I did on the top plates. I’m very short on big logs so that beam isn’t as think as I would have like me it. After doing some tests I determined one screw in each was too weak for fear of pivot, but two in each made it ridged. I felt the two screws would be stronger then removing wood for a tendon. They are 3/8 think screws 10” long so they really bite in. Also as you’ll see later when that wall fills up, it will get screwed in all along the top wall.

I see so many lifting logs or other heavy stuff with only a single lifting point and don't understand why you don't attach both end of a rope, cable, or chain to the log and attach the hoist to the middle of it. Think triangle 🔺️ .
@exploringlife738
@exploringlife738 2 года назад
Just my thought, if I understand correctly; after seeing how they pivoted the log, is it maybe a single central pivot contact was needed on the log to clear it between the corner cabin posts and the hoist's tripod legs? It seemed pretty tight at the top there, but looked like it worked because they could teeter-totter the end of the log upward and get it in place atop its post.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Correct Exploring Life, the centre point gives us some room to manoeuvre and it. The primary reason was though, how would I unhook it at the two ends? I wouldn’t be able to reach that far out on the ridge pole without climbing on top of it. That’s too sketchy for me:).
@No.1R3dneck
@No.1R3dneck 2 года назад
The length of time it took to set up your tripod, with having the two of you there, yous could have just lifted the log onto place by hand! Being how you were able to lift and carry the logs by yourself, I'm sure the two of you wouldn't have had an issue. Instead of taking 3-4 hours just to get "1" log into place... It could have taken maybe 20 minutes if you're lucky! Those poles aren't that big or heavy!
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
You must be much stronger then me. Lifting that over my head and having to balance it on a post is more then I can manage.
