In this video, I do a recap of the building of my cabin walls. I also answer the most common question. Why am I not insulating my cabin walls?
Eventually, I will likely do a little chinking but since this cabin will eventually be dismantled, transported, and reassembled I'll wait until it is in its final home.

Hey Beautiful Family...It's been a while!!!... This one was worth commenting on as your explanation was/is excellent...!!! First and foremost, traditional..." Piece Sur Piece"...Timber Frame and log architecture found in Canada (and other places also!) are modular by nature just as you have suggested... "Water Proofing"...is a...FANTASY...!!!!...as there is simply...NO WAY...!!!...to actually achieve it effectively at all...Homes are homes and not meant to be submarines or space ships... IF...one does actually achieve some great degree of...whether striping...waterproofing with paints, sealers, and the other noxious modern chemicals...that will in turn...DESTROY...the long-term health of the structure...for both the occupants and the natural materials the structure is built from... Designing and building a modern "airtight" structure (a very ignorant delusion within the modern architectural movement) has never proven to last past the 30-year mark without major issues of "building sickness"...mold inundation...moisture degradation...and a myriad of other catastrophic issues within the thermal diaphragm of the structure...often leading to decay interstitially within the structural members, the insulation, and other critical elements of the structure... DRAFT PROOF...(not...!!!...airtight)...is the ultimate goal for well-designed and built natural-traditional and sustainable architecture once completed and as stated in this video your long-term plans for this building are in flux and change for the immediate future...Traditionally, and naturally "draft proofing" this structure is not complicated and will (I'm sure) take place when you feel the need for it... You have done a remarkable job thus far that I can see within this building project and any that think otherwise or have "modern" viewpoints of what you "should have done" I would be glad to address each of their points...so feel free to "Pin" this to the top and I have no issue expanding every point I have made in support of what you just clearly stated in this video... Blessings, j

@@TrustinTimber I admit I have not overly scrutinized every video, and knowing that you are possibly moving this structure someday (a common practice among even professional log builders before the final sale and site assembly) there is no purpose in "felting" the spaces between the logs or getting overly carried away with a full "draft proofing" of all the "nooks and crannies" that are there (and will develop in the next few years... Looking forward to more videos...Love seeing the baby and your wife...AWESOME...and looking forward to any questions (or challenges?) that viewers may have...

As a career HVAC Tech and Indoor Air Specialist I couldn't agree more! I've seen it for years how a home that is too tightly sealed can create health problems (often from mold and rot/ moisture caused by the home not being able to breathe.) Still people insist on sacrificing their health (most unknowingly) for a small gain in efficiency which ultimately results in them having to purchase expensive indoor air purification and sterilization products. As a result, they often end up spending more than their efficiency gains in an attempt to keep themselves healthy.

Really enjoying your build series. Nicely done. Working for a renovation contractor, I was amazed how many homes we worked on that had mold in the walls. My old house had no vapour barrier, insulation or heat exchanger. Best house I ever owned. One of the best ways to keep water out and to protect a log cabin is big overhangs on the eaves. Keep it from hitting the walls.

Your experience regarding overheating is going to pay off for sure. I spent two years in a wall tent and had to stand outside at -40c while I waited for my wood stove to cool down after I left the damper open for too long. My cats loved it but I am building a small log home this year and I'm not insulating the walls either. Great job - I'm going to build some outbuildings using your technique so I can bring my skill level up.

There is a RU-vid channel, Project Highlander, that has a playlist called "the easiest log building method ever". Interesting because you two use similar methods, but different approaches/styles. Anyway, he has a way of insulating between the logs that might interest you... no musty/moldy smell. Might be something you could consider as you reassemble....

Great stuff can't wait to watch more. I was reading the comments about the moss or wool and how you seem to plan on moving it at some point. I was thinking maybe since its modular you can select two wall portions next to each other and try using wool on one and moss on the other. Then compare what holds up best when you disassemble it, if its no insulation, moss or wool. That way when you rebuild you'll know what way works best. Good luck 👍

Trustin, really good to see that your shoulder is back to functioning in small ways and on the mend, also to see your beautiful family again, and please tell Katlin that the videos on her channel are sorely missed by my old eyes. To insulate or not is a subject that isn't much discussed today, when everyone tries to save on heating bills, but back in the 50's, when metal window frames that sealed air into the rooms first came into the UK, black mould came with them and it still grows in the most unlikely houses and in many odd corners today, where drafts and any flow of air has been excluded from houses. In Bavaria, the tradition was and still is in many places, to open up all the windows for around 10/15 minutes during the day, rain or shine, to exchange the air in the rooms, and this was primarily about letting heavy air out and lighter air in. Additionally, all bedding is/was hung on the open window frame to let this 'air through' also. What connects these events is people breathing and sweating, and it is this, the moisture from people's bodies that enters their homes, mostly through their breathing, that has to be considered and allowed to leave in any build, firstly to stop mould growing, and secondly, to bring the sacred breath, that sweetness of natural life and the associate of soul's, back into people's homes. For me, the fire of spirit always burns brighter in a home when the souls that it warms and that it then burns within are well, and naturally, aired. So, yes, to insulate or not, and for me, the answer is to just find ways to stop the drafts blowing the candles out, Oh, and with my tongue in my cheek, can I ask when are you doing the video on how you interned to hang the wallpaper.

I'm a high performance builder looking to build something drastically more simple for myself in the near future. I love this design and process, and your philosophy! Agree also with letting the cabin stay a tad drafty; otherwise you'd just need to sleep with your windows open for fresh air anyways. What is the potential future wall insulation strategy, just putting wool between the logs for a a tiny bit of R value and some air attenuation? Seems like a lot of work for not a lot of gain?

@@blairarthur302 Thur- bolts, screw jacks (and related modern "concept" approaches in log architecture) are simply not necessary when the architecture follows as closely the principles of proven traditional modalities in means and materials application as Trustin has achieved with this modern " Piece Sur Piece" cabin... He will have no issues at all with how he has built this because of following the very well-proven traditional systems of constructive for such folk architecture. The issue (and why all the modern "fixes" like bolts and jacks came into play) as the traditional methods got either "reinvented" by those that knew nothing of actual traditional building systems...and/or...to augment the structure to meet perceived modern viewpoints in architecture rather than the proven historical systems of design and fabrication... I can more than appreciate the positive vibe your trying to offer Blair, but the foundation to it technically is not based in reality as much as it is in "I think" modern concepts in architecture. To this day the oldest (and best built) structures in the world are still over 100 years old or even older. The oldest lived in homes (and still functionally viable) that I have studied and emulate in my own work are typically between 300 and 800 years old...Modern architecture and the approaches of means and materials applications within their construction can't (and does not) hold a candle to these systems of design and fabrication...Modern buildings are aimed primarily at a profit and the consumer market industry behind them...not well-built structures...

Please remember that wood is an unstable material and when you start inside heating the house, the horizontal logs will shrink and a gap will appear on top. PermaChink or any sealant for log house will help you. You can do it very cheaply and authentically also. In the Russian north, dry marsh moss is used for compaction between logs. Moss is also useful because it is a natural antiseptic.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Yeah, I had started collecting Sphagnum moss. I got a grabage bag full. Do you think it's better than wool? I was affraid the moss would hold moisture where as the wool would not absorb moisture and therefor dry quicker. Hopefully the neither see moisture but at least during the building I figure it would as it's taken me a 2 years to build.

@@TrustinTimber On the contrary, dry sphagnum will not retain moisture at all, plus it delays the decay of the tree. The most widespread use of moss is for log sauna construction. Wool isn't bad either, but in my own log house the birds took away so much wool that it looked terrible. However, the house is very large, so it was decided to use a special sealant. Your design and execution lessens the need for chinking almost to the point of not needing it. As you say, live in it and let it settle and dry before deciding whats next. And you did say its temporary and you plan on moving it at some point. Not to worry about the insulating just now. It does make the building more permanent when you try to make it airtight. I have 3 acres of timber and I'm about to start building. The agony is that it's all standing green timber, and I need a shelter right away. The general rule I've always heard is that after the logs are de-barked and decked they should dry for a year before you use them. I hate to wait that long! One man built with green logs all vertical saying they don't shrink in length, and that you can go back and re-chink later. I will try that with a small 12 by 12 and see how it goes. Many thanks for the videos.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Yeah, I believe that to be true about shrinking in thickness not length. However, with this method I think you can build with green. Just don't fill the walls to the very top until the end so they have some time to settle.
