In this video, I give a bit more detail on fitting the big centre posts in my post and beam log cabin. I also explain why I think failure is so important and necessary.

Backstory
Growing on a farm in the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada I got my fill of manual labour and I couldn't wait to get to the big city and get an easy city slicker job. I sure made the most of those years but something was calling me back to a simpler life. So in 2013 we moved from the big city and bought a little cabin in the woods as our permanent home. This decision really changed the course of our life. Living along a flowing river full of trout, surrounded by a canopy of the old-growth forest has taught us the values of living within nature. But, like all good things you always want more. For now, we intend to keep this little slice of heaven but are looking to set up another home base a little further north.
Since we’re looking for land that has both a freshwater source and plenty of acres to explore, protect, and manage, we’re expecting to have to pay a fair fee and know we’ll need to put most of our financial resources into the land itself. We also want to design a life that allows us to live a debt-free life to avoid financial stress and worry that often prevents people from properly considering environmental factors in their home building decisions. When even the cheapest mass-produced house is beyond the reach of most, concerns about quality and environment are often pushed aside. This project is going to explore traditional building methods that have environmental concerns at the forefront.
Although it is a little disturbing to see how many trees it takes to make a small cabin I know they have been sustainably harvested from a planted woodlot and I feel so fortunate that my cabin project won’t contribute to the deforestation of the old growth of the great Canadian wildness that I love exploring. All the trees we are using were planted around the 1980s. At the rate of tree growth, and the size of the woodlot, if managed properly there would be trees for many many generations of cabin builders. My goal is to self harvest 100% of the logs used in this cabin not only reducing deforestation but also reducing environmental impact with the reduced transportation costs, and manufacturing of synthetic materials.
The cabin has been designed in a way that it can be completely dismantled and transported. While we build we are looking for the perfect piece of land to move our cabin.

Such resonating life lessons. My school woodworking table ended up wobbly, but the process was so enjoyable that it provided an incentive to keep trying. Failure is just a word that describes having had the courage to learn, and success is the wisdom to see that trying/failing/learning process through. Spreading that courage and wisdom with each of your videos is the ultimate gift.

Always a pleasure reading your comments. It's interesting now being a father how I'm annualizing all the little details that shaped me through my childhood. My table turned out pretty good and I remember thinking, finally something I'm good at and it gave me so much self esteem. I know now that good table was probably more luck then skill. One little mistake and I would have thought, just another thing I suck at and maybe never tried it again. I'm making sure my daughters efforts always gets greeted with positive encouragement regardless of the outcome.

There you go Dick. That whole episode I had your comment in mind. I had shot so much but in the end when I watched it with a few people they all thought it was kind of boring and I had to agree. I'm really happy through that what remained still pleased you. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks so much. Always looking to make the time to make more RU-vid videos but it's not all that lucrative so it usually has to take a back burner to higher paying activities but I'm in it for the long haul. I really enjoy both sides of it. Being outdoors, building, cameras and editing so it's a great hobby for me.

Hi Trustin...Just checking in after a long hiatus from the "internet"...Nice video overall and looks like you have been busy...!!!...Great Job!!! As to the joint at 00:24...(?)...That is a very common joint (not a reinvention...😉🤣)..in both the log and timber frame architecture, and employed in most frames of the more traditional context (often in the roof systems.) Your use of it here is both proper to application and fairly well executed though I could not see the tenon formation to make a clear determination of it fully...In Canada, the traditional "Piece sur Piece" log and timber homes of the late 1600s to 1800s used this commonly... As for your method of layout for the joint...(?)...there should be zero "guestimation" at all, though the "bubble scribe" is fine and commonly used by modern woodworkers such as you have in this video... This is a joint that can be fitted the first time with about 95% (or greater) accuracy if the proper layout methods and tools are used...starting with those like the 筬定規 (Osa jōgi.) Use the Kanji provided to look this up and hit images...in English its called a "wire gauge" and used in countless traditional crafts for remote "scribe work" when two members (i.e. stone, timber, etc) are too larger and cumbersome to be brought together for fitting until time for final assembly... It belongs to the family of joints called "Gain" or "Bridle" joints and of course, has its long history well documented in Japan, Korea, China, and all through European timber frames as well... The "tripod" is a form of "shear leg" raising assembly and would be more mobile for you if used with two legs and a rope as the "tension member." Also note, the use of modern metal fasteners is simply not necessary (saves lots of money too!) or could have been greatly mitigated... Good luck and congrats to you and Katlin on the addition to your family!!! Blessings, j

Thanks so much Jay for always steering me in the right direction. Always appreciated. Learning plenty along this journey, but really happy with how it's all coming together. Starting to prep for the roof now which has been intimidating me since I decided to build a cabin. Maybe I should e-mail you what I have planned to get your thoughts.

@@TrustinTimber I would love to hear from you. I am not on email much these days. Weekends only if I make it to the computer for such things. I'm timber framing a large Elder House deep in Amish country so it's all "horse and buggy" stuff around here. This project is within a cloistered traditional Essene that lives without power or modern amenities, so most days are simple traditional labor, living, and pleasures without much "modern" contact. I will make a note to look for your email with a time to schedule a chat. Blessings, j

The light was great. I guess that if failure comes from expectations, then living with failure is more a question of are or were those expectations reasonable, or not, and what are or were those expectations built upon, my own developing, growing and ever-changing real self-knowledge or on the somewhat static, fixed and judgemental wants, desires and wishes of others expectations of me. In the later case, expectations give birth to expectations that in turn give birth to more expectations, and yet not one of these inbred dream sequences is built on the very natural intimacy of self and other experience. Congratulations to you both again, and further to your recent comment, yes, babies do teach us a lot about ourselves, about love, about how to love them and how to love ourselves as we are loving them, and if we don't want to feel like a failure as a parent, how not to expect too much of them and/or of ourselves as we are learning by doing parenting and making so many mistakes and then trying to rectify as many of them as we can along the way.

Agree. I do a fair amount of rigging and crain work in a very large shipyard and would say 9 of those screws is beyond overkill. I probably wouldn't screw through the rigging strap. That would be my only advice, if any. Honestly this guy probably has alot better appreciation for side loading and attention to detail using that chain fall and tri-pod than alot of 20 something yr old "professional" riggers that I see on the daily using multi-ton remote operated crains. With modern comfort comes a little over confidence/comfort. Kid got half his face torn off a year ago by simply not paying attention. Way running a crain down into a compartment on a ship. When done, didn't hang his hooks back on the ring before taking gear back out of compartment. Hooks got caught and loaded 20 ton crain to the point the hooks bent and shot straight up and out of compartment hatch, striking the young crain operator in the face. He was not expected to make it but make a miraculous recovery (and was the recipient of multiple reconstructive efforts). Regardless, this guys seems to have his shit in order well enough for the tasks at hand. Sorry for the tangent...

Hi, this is really impressive, smart. Rising the building in what I call after a "TOWER-PRINCIPLE" and then constructing it around the TOWER and finally putting the roof on the whole building. You make measurements from the tripod that is a TOWER and stretches it (the building) out from that point - the "balancing point" of the whole building. If the tripod is places in the center or the balancing point of the building then this building will become a success after my opinion and persuasion. 1) 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙧𝙗𝙤𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙙 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙞𝙧❓ 2) 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 2 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧❓ 𝙄𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨❓
