The smoke stove is a great idea. Having built many a structure in the woods, small smudge fires spread around the entire job site goes a long way to keeping the bugs at bay. Rhyme! haha

Nice spoon! My first 3d object that I carved was a spoon. I had seen Paul Sellers sharpen an old chisel on his youtube channel and I was waiting for some glue to dry one day in my shop and I had an old chisel so I thought I'd give sharpening it a try. I got it surprisingly sharp. Up until then I thought a chisel had to have a hammer lol! But this you could just push thru the wood. I picked up a piece of pine and started testing it. I kept going and I remembered Paul saying, as I watched him carve a spoon, if it doesn't look like a spoon, cut it off. So I just kept going and before long, surprise, a spoon! before long I had gotten a couple of carving knives and have enjoyed carving ever since. Loved yours!

Dang, hand-carved moon spoons! I've been hoping to see them show up on Amazon, tho I realize they're likely too time intensive to float out there. SIGH. Thanks for the great music, Lane, and the night lights, Trustin. Enjoyed the rain christening the house-tarp! Brings forth a truly house-warming sound.

Hi Trustin, you have already mentioned the pitch of your roof, so this is just a vote for you to consider or even reconsider a knee stock wall of any height, up to say 3 feet, if the roof pitch set by your ridge pole will stand it. The point is that any knee stock makes a big difference to useable headroom areas on the first floor, and I am sure that you have done a couple of sketches to see how this roof pitch will affect your bedroom. But...if you have been in a bedroom where the roof runs down into the floor, then you will know that the loss of space can feel claustrophobic and that the room can quickly start to feel as if it has become just a crawl space. Yes, you can partly overcome this by putting a false wall in at say 3 feet high, with cupboard space behind, but the loss of floor space will be great and you will end up with a knee stock wall anyway, albeit a false one. Yes, I know that many factors have to come into this decision because of the style of build you are into at the moment, but you've got a lean-to shelter and sleeping in this while imagining it as a room with a front wall can start to tell you what a first floor room without a knee stock will feel like. And finally, on a less argumentative note, I do agree that your mallet is great, but, man oh man, I do love the smooth appearance and precise application of those long bladed chisels.

I've considered I many times over but not going to do it. I get your concern but I would rather get this finished and start building the other half. Then other buildings. From and structural engineering point I'm just not confident. I want the roof to lock into that main second sill and lock this sucker down super tight. It might face a lake that has heavy winds one day. I'm not taking any risks.

It's a beautiful thing to see you back at it. Your attention to making the logs on both sides line up speaks of your fine workmanship. I like seeing your use of the ladder to step the log upstairs (save that shoulder) The SPOON...so delicate, like your use of the chain saw. So many contrasts in motion. I'm going to try your smokey anti bug implement as the season is upon us. Foe some odd reason I thought the front face was all glass . What direction does the front face ?
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Well front now is the doorway, but front once the other side is finished will be all glass where you see those three big windows spaces now.

I and many wish to thank you for sharing and being so informative with this video and series. Your method of "grooving" the wall logs is always wise. One doe not have to chink the logs in your method. Also as Cabins settle the walls get even tighter. Really nice, thank you again! Sincerely, Ross

excuse the ridiculous question ... but why did you not make the floorboards, at least those of the first floor, with tongue and groove ... one for the alignment of the floor that would come naturally and two to prevent dirt from falling below ... considering that once dry wood will definitely shrink ... great job you are very good bye Gian Luca

Im curious as to why you chose not to insulate between courses. Your painstakingly scribing each for a beautiful fit. It would only add minutes to each course to pack some "chinking" insulation in there. You'd have a fully weather tight 4 season structure. Exponentially increasing it value both monetary and efficiency. Just curious. As a fellow builder, I truly appreciate your effort and skills.
