In 2013 we bought a little cabin in the woods as our permanent home. This decision really changed the course of our life. Living along a flowing river full of trout, surrounded with a canopy of old-growth forest has taught us the values of living within nature. But, like all good things you always want more. For now, we intend to keep this little slice of heaven but are looking to set up another home base a little further north.
Since we’re looking for land that has both a fresh water source and plenty of acres to manage a woodlot we’re expecting to have to pay a fair fee and know we’ll need to put most of our financial resources into the land itself. We also want to design a life that allows us to live a debt-free life to avoid financial stress and worry that often prevents people from properly considering environmental factors in their home building decisions. When even the cheapest mass-produced house is beyond the reach of most, concerns about quality and environment are often pushed aside. This project is going to explore traditional building methods that have environmental concerns at the forefront.
The biggest question most of you will face if trying to pursue a similar journey is where would I be able to get logs legally that wouldn’t have a negative environmental impact. With a little looking around you might be surprised how many people have planted woodlots because municipalities and conservation groups have been providing grants and subsidies to landowners encouraging them to fill their land with trees. It’s expected that one day these trees will be harvested for lumber. However, sawmills are looking for trees larger than 18” in diameter. In southern Ontario that’s going to take roughly 60 years and for the trees to get that large and they need a lot of space to grow. In my case, the landowner happened to be family and was more than happy to have me out there thinning his woodlot. So part of what this cabin project will showcase is making use of logs smaller than those that have commercial value. I did harvest a few bigger ones for key elements of my cabin design but for the most part, these trees are a byproduct of woodlot management.
If like me, you wish to self harvest your own logs it might be worth inquiring with the local landowner who have woodlots if they are willing to sell you some trees for a trade of services.
If you plan to work the wood with hand tools and build a cabin without heavy machinery, I’d highly recommend using a Coniferous species. Coniferous, also known as evergreen, are trees that have needles instead of leaves. In woodworking, we call these softwoods as they are much easier to work with when using hand tools and much lighter.
This woodlot has White Pine, Norway Spruce, and Siberian Larch. The larch are similar to a native Canadian Larch also known as Tamarack. Tamarack is a word from the native Abenaki language, which simply means “wood used for snowshoes.” I will be using some Larch in this project since it is the strongest and most rot-resistant tree on the woodlot but for the most part, I’ll be using the lighter, and easier to work with, White Pine.
Although it is a little disturbing to see how many trees it takes to make a small cabin I feel so fortunate that my cabin project won’t contribute to the deforestation of the old growth great Canadian wildness here in Ontario that I love exploring. At the rate of tree growth, and the size of the woodlot, if managed properly there would be trees for many many generations of cabin builders. My goal is to self harvest 100% of the wood used in this cabin not only reducing deforestation but also reduce environmental impact with the reduced transportation costs, and manufacturing of synthetic materials.

Thanks so much Janey. I'm not sure what I like more, the axe or the camera but the combination seems to keep me fulfilled. I really appreciate the comment. Sometimes I think I overproduce these things and that they maybe don't feel natural but I can't help but try to make every aspect of what I do something I'm proud.

@exploringlife738
@exploringlife738 4 года назад
I think about the winter aspect a lot, too. I lived in snow-states in the US for 35 years, and the winters can be monumental. However, I did visit one place that found something to help with the white-out 5 months of the year ... an indoor atrium. By just having two sides of a room walled with ample insulating windows they created a near-tropical oasis with indoor plants, flowers, trees and a small raised garden (they even had a few small birds living in the atrium). Having spent an hour outside in 2-foot snow cover, then quickly into the atrium with its warm, moist air - and a nice water-feature to enjoy - I cannot even describe what an amazing experience it was! Built-in atriums are popular in the UK, Europe, South America and Asia. I wish more builders in North America incorporated them, for both cold and desert homes that benefit from oasis.

Well, good news, 16 is an awesome age, and you can live multiple lives. I also live in Ontario, and I didn't always live this lifestyle. I once had an office, flew around the world doing fashion shows and photoshoots. Stayed in fancy hotels, ate and fancy restaurants even wore a suit sometimes. Wouldn't trade any of it and I think part of why I'm so happy living simply now is because I've already lived lavishly. So aim for the stars. Chase your biggest and wildest dreams while you are young. You can always simmer down like me and resort to this lifestyle but I think people should go see the world before they do.

@@TrustinTimber Absolutely... 木霊 ( Kodama) are the soul spirits of trees and 神 (Kami) generic for "gods" and in this context of writing the "god spirits" of trees following the foundational elements and beliefs of 神道 (Shinto) understanding... I was raised within a mix Native American cultural group both culturally by heritage and from the perspective of daily life skills, reverence for the natural world and beliefs. I was also fortunate, at an early age, to be exposed to a 数奇屋大工 (Teahouse Carpenter) and his Korean wife who practiced 민중 도교 (folk Taoism) or also called in English "Mountain Taoism." Good day. I love your cabin build and would like to learn from your experiences. I'm building a cabin using white pine logs that I will cut down. Would you please tell me what conclusion you came to regarding the best time to cut the logs and when will the bark peel the easiest? I did notice you were partially torching the logs on another later video to remove sap so maybe these logs were cut during summer? Thanks and all the best with the new baby!
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
From what I have learned it all depends on your client, moisture levels in the air, and type of bugs. Cabin builders I respect have said they cut in the summer and let the logs dry with bark on because they like the way it looks later. But I have a wood boring beetle in this forest and if I leave the bark on the beetles get in there and eat the wood. If I peel it the logs they get really mouldy and sappy, and the wood turns really grey. I’ve found felling and peeling around December 20th the perfect time for hard dry clean logs.

I had a 3 level spinal fusion. 10 years after that that failed. I spent a year look a neurologist that make me an appointment. I found a good one that told me the truth about what he could do. He rebuilt my fusion using a spinal rods. I had lots of nerve damage. 22 years past all of that. I have neuropathy really bad. I not telling you this to make you feel sorry for me. I want you to take care of you. Avoid any physical labor you can. Find a tool that helps you lift stuff, pull stuff,move stuff. Give me a fulcrum I'll move the world kind of stuff. You will have all the physical things you want, you can still go to bed dragging your tail in behind you. Remember that big resource l mentioned it's you. Take care of you.

Yeah, well noted. I grew up with back pains from sports. However, since starting building this cabin I have been doing yoga every day and not pushing myself to hard. I actually have eliminated my back pains now and feeling great. But I'm also being carful.

Interesting how you are asking what you can do differently. I think your "creative" talents will definitely come in to play.

Yeah, I know even when I try to copy something exactly it always goes trough the Trustin Timber filter and comes out different so I'm relying on that process as I develop this. I think most of the innovation (if there is any) will come from a necessity either limited by what I can lift, or resources and tools I have available.

A good log should lose moisture slowly, in Brazil the logs are debarked and thrown into the river so as not to lose moisture. slowly. The reason is that in the sun they would dry quickly and crack. In winter with snow it has the same effect as throwing them in the river. The Indians buried the logs when they retired in the summer. obviously they were a community with many workers, such a job doesn’t make sense to just one person.

interesting. I didn't know that about drying logs in a river or burring them in snow. Thanks.

You honor the trees by using them for beautiful buildings. And you sequester half their weight in carbon as long as the building stands!

Did your parents help you pay for this mate?

Pay for what? I don't own the land and have permission to take the trees in trade for labor. My cost for the whole cabin should be under $5000. The project has already turned a profit on absence, amazon links, and sponsorships and I'm just getting started.

In twenty years we will have no forests, all distroyed by youtubers that are building cabins.

Though you may be posting in jest (?), if not, you missed the part in the video about how this forest needs thinning or it will die out. Trees are a renewable resource as long as people, and governments, care for them and their environment. Watch the end of the video for a very thoughtful explanation of how this healthy approach to forest management is being applied.

Glad to hear your concern. However, RU-vidrs are the furthers threat of deforestation. I'd say the world uses more toilet paper in a day then all the RU-vidrs in the world will ever cut down. Right now they are cutting a massive section of boreal forest that took 300 years to grow every day, grinding it up for paper towel, toilet paper, and paper. Never mind the harvesting of commercial lumber. If trees were selectively harvested as I'm doing here, and always leaving trees in the areas to grow bigger and allow new growth we would never have an issue but unfortunently it's just not a profitable approach for the businesses involved. However, just to give you an idea, on this 100acre woodlot, I've calculated that you could build a 1500 square foot log home every generation (30 years) forever, and have a completely sustainable private woodlot.
