Hey guys, I found that if we added a few drops of water to the bottom of the bowl to wet the surface before adding the ash makes the cake is stronger and less susceptible to breaking apart. Be sure to let it dry out for a couple of days and it should be perfect!

Hey, all. I really like this channel. Even the opening guitar piece is cool (who dat?), like a 1930's movie soundtrack. I have only watched a few episodes on this channel but am looking forward to watching every one of them.

Hello, i use vodka instead of water, i make the mix more creamy, and put few drops in the pipe. I feel that it sticks better this way.

great tutorial. Some ideas for you, just collect cigar ash as you smoke it and keep it in a small ziplock baggie. You can much crush it to a fine fine powder with your finger in the bag. Also, I don't think boiled or purified water is necessary. You have to wait for all the water to evaporate anyway. I have done this many times to many many pipes, it works great. I smooth it out with a q tip, sometimes wet q tip. I let it dry for a couple days until its completely dry then i smoke it. You also have to remmeber cake will build on this ash coating really fast. Keep an eye out on the cake build up.

Very nice tutorial, thank you. Hoping you plan to show the next step of this process as well. Thanks to your video on Rebuilding Vulcanite stems, I was able to repair the bit on 2 estate pipes to a usable state. I think I have 1 that may need the treatment you covered in this episode. Hope you have an awesome week ahead and happy piping brother.

Piping and Camping that is great! It is exactly what I was hoping these videos would do. Demystify the repair process to encourage pipe owners.

I have made Cane Rod Pipers cement on old burnt out pipes and it works great. Thanks for your tip on the pipe gurgle.

I have a mason jar I keep my cigar ash in for mudding. My trick for braking down the ash is two 1/4” steel ball bearings. I’ll cap the jar and spin the bearings around and bounce them lightly and it works fantastic. Also I can spoon put exactly how much I want with a Czec tool and keep the rest.

Great tutorial, helpful !!! Wow tho, that noise that tool makes on the bottom of that ceramic bowl when you were hydrating the ash is like fingernails on a chalkboard !!! Almost enough to make me turn the volume all the way down !!! I'm just gripin' tho, great video !!!

Very interesting process. Was the bowl burned out or just poorly drilled when it was made?

This is an excellent video! I still have the very first pipe that I ever purchased (when I was 16), a Karl Eric, and it has been with me all over the world. I'm 35 now, and it started gurgling and behaving strangely a couple of years ago; this excellent technique quickly and easily restored what has always been one of my most beloved pipes to its former glory. Thank you!

@richardk8313 0 seconds ago Well I tried CaneRodPiper’s experimental Pipe Mortar (alternative to muddying with cigar ash) on several pipes now cobs and briars following the recipe in his video and I found the results disappointing at best…not only is it a bit messy and more time consuming to apply compared to muddying with cigar ash but it simply does not hold up as well…after allowing several days for the pipe mortar to dry in the pipe bowl my smoked pipes returned it to its wetted stage and when it had time again to dry out produced a powdery dust-like residue that had to be shaken out of the bowl before smoking again. All things being equal I am of the opinion that muddying with cigar ash remains a better and simpler way to go.

Thank you for the video. What coating do you put after the pipe mud has dried?
@chrisw7347
@chrisw7347 4 года назад
No need for any coating, the pipe mud is the coating itself.

@@chrisw7347 in the video he talked about an additional bowl coating, i was also curious as to what he was talking about

Very late reply but some people may still want to know...and since the OP didn't answer. The coating your asking about would be a pre-carbonisation coating, it is a carbon powder coating some people prefer to use in the bowl. Easiest method I've heard is a thin coating of honey inside the bowl then fill it with the carbon powder, let it sit over night to 24hrs. A few YT clips on it if anyone is interested.

Gurgling doesn’t really bother me. Of course, I puff the goopiest stuff in town! Haha!However, I do want to learn about pipe mud! Garbage Man Pipers tip works well.... just blow a tiny puff into your stem! The end! Haha! Thank you! Love the bear logo!

is that cement?
@mrbrown3546

In the video he says that it is ash from a cigar. He calls it 'cement like' and this is often referred to as not just 'pipe mud' but also 'pipe cement' so that might be your confusion.
