Hi Terry, been following you from the start. I'm hoping to do a similar channel to you. Anyway, I have built plenty of jabsco pumps, a few tricks for you: Carefully pry out the impeller with two screwdrivers, while protecting the sides of the pump. When refitting the shaft, the loose rubber ring on the shaft is called a slinger. It's job is to throw the water off the leaking shaft to stop the water reaching the bearings. When fitting the cam, smear the back of the cam and it's screw with red hylomar, this stops water causing the leak you have. It is irrelevant which way round the impeller goes as the blades sort themselves out when you turn the engine. Fit the impeller with fairy liquid to lube it before the water reaches it. Also, if the end cover is worn, you can turn it around to avoid buying another one. I'm glad you rebuilt it properly, pointless not doing that when you've bought all the bits. Years of service in it now. All the best, Nick.

You should clean parts up like that with a sheet of wet and dry on a flatt surface 🙂

Great video. I've also rebuilt a penta water pump. Make sure the back plate is secure. Had one that wore the base of the pump housing away as it rotated with the rubber-bladed thingy me Bob. The plate on the front can be reversed so you have a nice new surface for the gasket. I would advise putting a bit of silicone on the gasket then do screws up a bit then next day tighten them up fully. Nice job though. Do watch all those seals though on a penta they're a bloody nightmare.

Can't believe I actually watched this video all the way through without skipping but that may have something to do with the fact that I also have a volvo penta 2002 diesel engine on my yacht as well. I see that your exhaust manifold elbow thingy has been replaced. I've just had to fork out £250 for a new one as my old (cast iron) one, was completely rusted out and presume that is the problem no water was coming out from the exhaust. However, I've yet to find out as I've still got to fit it back on.....myself! Ever since I got a quote from a volvo dealer to come and do a service and refit it for me at a cost of £675, which is why I now need to watch youtube videos, like this one, on how to do it yourself. Thanks for this though, as it will come in handy if I ever have a problem with the water pump! HAPPY SAILING 2024

Hiya pal I have worked on a lot of these engines full rebuilds,the best maintenance tip for any marine engine is white vinegar,try locking it in the water system for 24 hours,then slush it out,the pump your working on replacing the cover plat,use bolts with locking nuts,think that would have sorted it ,if you are doing a full pump service, full service kit with shaft and bearings, Parts4engines Sheffield they are the best and cheap,good luck pal all the very best for 2024.

Love videos like this. One thing I did notice was the new impeller had the 'fins' pre loaded in the opposite direction to when you removed the cover at the start of the video. Hopefully won't have caused any damage to the new impeller.

Easy and cheap Bodge: get a small o-ring to put on the screw shaft under the head of the screw. You can use a little lock-tight or lanacote to prevent calcium build up on the threads and make later replacement of the cam easier.

The screw on the top that is leaking would usually have a little copper or fibre washer at the top to seal it.

Last time I had to do a water pump was while sailing. Luckily I had plenty of spares, silicone grease and sealant. Not the most pleasant of jobs while at an angle and bouncing along. I also had a screw snap on me but a small mole grip helped there until I got back.

That's a bit of a bugger after all the hard work you put in & it's still got a drip. I hope the some PTF tape sorts the drip out out for you., It keeps my power washer from leaking anyway lol.

Lots of maintenance but still not done. That's likely to be a lot of the jobs on your list for a while. You don't really know whats what until you dig in. On the plus side most of the jobs are likely to be like this one... fixing little fiddly bits.

Hey Terry. might be a good plan to find a better condition used pump IF that housing is outta whack. Jabsco makes a high-flo replacement for around 380 euro made out of fancy pants brass , it has an oversized impeller and larger channel that increases flow. I've seen other folks convert it to a belt drive style pump too. I recall about 6/7 years ago seeing a guy use a 12v galley pump and attached the in/out raw water lines to get him out of becalmed area where he sat for Days losing his mind. But I think he was still overheating a bit 😂 talk about trying anything to get moving. Lol, recheck your footage. Once the motor starts running saltwater is pissing out and running down the pipework. Not fixed, not yet.

A piece of glass (did you break any mirrors lately?) with a pice of wet sanding paper on top.. you need those surfaces TIGHT! (-: I'm gonna leave it with that! But keep going.. in the long run I'm sure your videos will become great how-to's for people in the same situation. (Edit: move the parts in figure of eight to avoid curves)

Gasket seal???

The more that I see these Jabsco pumps, the more I'm convinced that they're designed to fail. It's concerning when how much of your engine relies on this pump working. Bigger boats use a centrifugal pump, because the impellor doesn't rely on friction to seal or flexible vanes to work, so why don't they fit them to these smaller engines? There seems to be no logical sense to it, yeah centrifugal pumps typically don't prime themselves, but if your pump is below your waterline, that won't matter if the seacock is open. The person that comes up with a modified housing that converts a jabsco pump into a centrifugal impellor pump could retire a millionaire, because everybody would buy one. Other possible advantages are that a centrifugal impellor would probably never need replacing, the seals and bearings would last a hello of a lot longer than they currently do because there's only very minimal sideways thrust forces on the shaft, while it wouldn't rapidly wear out towards failure if it accidentally ran dry from a few minutes...they tolerate a lot more abuse. When I eventually get my own boat, I'm going to take a serious look at one of these pumps and see if I can prototype and test a 3d-metal-printed housing conversion part and a brass impellor, because these jabsco pumps tread a very fine line between _just about good enough_ and _barely adequate_ which becomes a problem when they break so easily.
