A ton of people have been asking me about this. The install was pretty straight forward, only a few hiccups, but they look awesome! Haven't beaten them up too much yet, but plan to ian the future!

Here’s a tip: never use a torque wrench to break a nut loose. That can cause it to come out of calibration. Either grab a bar to slide over the ratchet to extend leverage or get a breaker bar!

Breaker bars are your friend, Jason! Also, you may want to put some blue lock-tight on those bolts to keep water out, as I have the aluminum RCI skids as well and the bolts suffered quite a bit of corrosion in the first year. Great video as always!

Thanks for the video. I have the steel RCI skids and today I changed my transfer case fluid. I was disappointed in realizing that I had to remove the skid plate. There is no hole in the transfer case skid for some reason while there are holes for the engine and transmission drain plugs on the other skid plates. The strange thing is that the black, steel cross-member support piece for the transfer case does include a hole so that doesn't need to be removed (thankfully). Why the actual skid plate does not, I have no idea. Changing transfer case oil is such a simple job but now it's a pain knowing that the skid plate has to be removed. I've contacted RCI today in hopes they can provide an explanation of why there isn't a hole in the first place. I will be taking my skid plate to a machine shop tomorrow to mill out an opening so I don't have to take this off again. Word of warning: The aluminum skids plates bend and can crack really easily on rocks. I purchased the aluminum RCI front skid and cracked the welds doing a trail in Big Bear, CA (White Mountain Trail). I was really surprised. But, RCI came through though and sent me a new steel skid plate to replace it. It's much heavier but it seems to take a lot more punishment.

I bought the full steel setup for maximum strength, added about 110 lbs total (without filler plate). I dont plan on adding a new bumper or bull bars or a roof rack with ladder, so weight shouldn't be an issue. On my short time driving with the plates installed, I definitely noticed a change in body sway during slow speed quick turns. Felt more centered and steady. Them steel plates definitely lowered the center of gravity

Great channel! I have the RCI skids too. "Pro tip": Back the bolts out & put some anti seize grease on them. Skids collect all the muck from the trails and you are going to want to remove them to spray them off. 2nd exhaust pipe comes in contact with the Transfer case skid. Use an exhaust wrap on that pipe or you will hear a metal on metal rattle.

Awesome videos! But since everyone else is picking on you, I'll add something. I always toss extra jack stands under my rig when I'm getting under it. I don't trust $.50 worth of Chinese plastic. I had a close call when I was 19 and ever since then I make sure I'm over protected. And the new 18v-20v impact tools will make quick work of those bolts. Keep up the good work!
@SwellRunner
@SwellRunner 6 лет назад
Max Haha. Thanks. That’s a good idea with the jack stands. There’s actually plenty of room for me to crawl around under there without anything lifting it up. I just rode it up on the stands to make things a little more convenient. If the plastic was to have crushed, it would have been scary, but I’d still have been cleared.

For those curious on weight the RCI engine, trans, and transfer case package in aluminum weighs in at about 75-80 pounds if you also get the bumper filler plate that protects the radiator gap in front of the engine skid. The factory engine and trans skid I took off weighed in between 20- 25 pounds. Net gain is 50-55 pounds.

I have the same skid set on the way for my 2016 as well as their tank skid and sliders. The stock tank skid seems pretty thin and the tank hangs so low. A couple tips: Loosening the frame end of those braces would have relived the downward pressure. For breaking loose tight fasteners, get as close to the bolt or nut as you can. Use a short socket if you have room and no extension if you can do without. Makes for better leverage and fewer skinned knuckles. Once loose use whatever is easiest. I do enjoy your videos.

I can't read through all the comments to see if anyone has touched on this, but I scrolled through the video looking to see if you had installed the (2) 3 hole L brackets that should have come with the transmission skid plate, and it doesn't look like you did in the video, maybe you did afterward. If you were wondering why you had those brackets and 6 carriage bolts and nuts left over, that's why. You install them on the top of the plate to add structural support if you end up leveraging the vehicle on an obstacle or come down hard on a rock. Anyway, thanks for the vids, they are a good source for how to make some of these DIY projects easier.

Take a large socket and long extension and use that on your ratchet handle to break em loose (or get a dedicated pipe that works). You dont need alot of fancy tools, I had nothing when I started, you just have to learn to work with what you got. I have all the fancy tools but I could do 95% of what I do with the tools you got and knowledge just takes more time.

I wish my rig was a toyota with skids already, yes they are pretty thin (the ones I have seen are around 1/8 or thinner punched tin, mpg numbers) thick enough for light rocks if your careful but if you live in a area like mine not going to cut it for any real offloading. I am watching for design ideas for my skids that I need to build. Edit: just realized that was a really old comment, shrug.
