It was time. The 4Runner needed new brakes. SO, I figured I’d try something new. I’ve never put high performance brakes on a vehicle and I have to say… Loving these so far.

Jason Koertge I ran slotted rotors for years on another car and caught a small pebble, man did that make some noise! Just something to keep an eye on that’s all.

Just upgraded my brakes to Cquence about a month ago with the dimpled & slotted black zinc rotors and the posi-quiet xtended wear pads. Very happy so far, but I also don't drive my 4R like a race car...

Hey man, Im not sure if you already have ( i couldnt find it), but i would love it if you made a video about your entire setup -- primarily what you have going on with your 4runner. The equipment you use, what all the storage and tools you have are in the trunk. Im interested and planning on making a setup like yours within the next year or two and so far it seems like yours is the perfect setup for me.Thhanks

Hey Jason great video, can you do a breakdown of what the main pieces of gear have cost. Basic cost of car plus tyres plus roof rack plus.......just to give us an idea how much it costs to put a nice overlanding rig together.

Thanks for doing this video. I just finished lifting my FJ80 with a Dobinsons 3" lift. Love it so far. You should look into Dobinsons. They are located in South Florida, David Otero is a very knowledgeable and patient person. Dobinsons is from Australia and they are one of the more popular lifts. They are heavy duty. They have all strengths and ride feel. Thanks Jason keep up the good work.

Hi Jason, to measure the height, don't measure to the ground because it depends on the tyre size, the wear, and the air pressure. Measuring from the centre of the hub is better, but the centre of the hub is not marked. Better to measure from the bottom of the rim. To install the best measurement spring and shocks, the weight of the trip packed vehicle should be measured front and rear and then the spring rate and height decided by someone who does engineering. Same for the shock rates, they should be valved for the particular vehicle and measurements of the weights of each corner. Been doing that and the result across offroad in AU made a huge difference. The problem is that the suspension sellers sell their standard shock valving regardless of the weights and spring selections.

Gonna stay with ome? Maybe the BP51 or you could always go all out and get Kings! I’ll be doing radflo 2.5” all around with 650lb front coils and total chaos UCA’s! Love the content bud! Keep it up 👍🏼

i was looking into the OME setup but then started reading the dobinson's thread on T4R forums. it seems like a similar setup and i think the dobinsons might be slightly cheaper.

Jason, everything you've added seems to put the truck at or over the GVWR, especially with that trailer. Improving, your brakes is a good idea, but remember you only added higher friction pads and disc that may cool a bit better. The general idea about increasing braking performance is adding surface area, both on the pad and rotors. If you don't increase those, as well as a larger master cylinder and added boost, you're not really improving the brake system. also, springs and shocks alone will not compensate for the extra weight you're carrying. You really need to add better anti-sway and anti-roll controls. Not only is your full loaded over-lander not stable at highways speeds, but if you are ever in a long steep decent on a wet day, you may well end up someplace you don't want to be. I recommend you do some math and figure out where you need to be as far as safety and control.

Did you buy the protecting plate for the back shocks? When I bought pretty much the same suspension from toytec last month I think they were $29 add on just a piece of metal to protect the bottom of the rear shock

Really great videos, so much so that I went to test drive a 4Runner yesterday with the intent to purchase. I noticed the shimmy in the steering wheel at highway speeds on the 2018 TRD off road. Just wondering if you or anyone else have noticed this.

Ya know. Mine comes and goes. I was annoyed by it the other day (it’s so slight), I looked it up on t4r.org forums. Seemed super common. So - I figured if others see it, it’s not an indication of something broken or not working correctly, then I’m cool with it. Many have said it’s rooted in poorly balanced tires.

Jason Koertge they said it was just a tire balance issue. I went back and took it on a pretty long drive at all speeds. No shakes/shimmy. I walked out of there with a 2018 TRD off road. Thanks for the videos and ideas for mods to my new 4Runner.

I drove two with the same issue. My 2017 has it for like the first 10 minutes of driving until the tires warm up I guess? I’ve learned to live with it but will have them rebalance at the first oil change.

I’m no expert, but my understanding of how brakes fail is overheating. And, that can happen off-road when you have to “ride” them for an extended period (e.g. downhill crawl) or just use them a lot. So, performance brakes are not just for racing.

I’ve just installed my Kings on my17 TRD Pro. Def a big difference. I have the same set up front as Jason and rear arb drawers and fridge. Full skids rci sliders. OME heavy duty rear speings(440lbs). Sitting at almost the same height as jason rig. Have the 550lb coils upfront and wondering if 600 woulda been better. Still some nose dive in braking. Sweet system tho.

The Kings along with UCAs were a pretty straight forward bolt on/off and took me one weekend day. Not much more complicated than your front bumper. ..Maybe 6 hours and a few cold ones for front and rear with no help. Jason, is there any chance you could measure the height of the floor at the rear door? Specifically where you would plant your foot. Reason I'm asking is due to my daughter's physical limitations and how she transfers from her wheel chair into the back seat. I'm a newer owner of a 4runner (totally stock 17 TRD Off Road) and am looking to maybe do a 3" lift but wondering how much higher it will raise the door sill. I did install the Amp Research retractable running boards so right now I think it's 12" to the step (when down) and another 12" to the door sill. Thanks.

Both are great suspension companies. King has been around a lot longer and were more off an offroad racing company. Icon have great products, so many products. At this point, it's all about preference. Both are great.
