It was time to get the Hilux expedition ready! I got to use plenty of Eezi Awn gear on the Jimny and I knew that the Hilux, would handle it all much better. So I was really excited that Eezi Awn were keen to get involved on this new build! I took my favourite Tent and Awning setup from the Jimny and put it on the Hilux, except this time, the Hilux is actually big enough to safely drive around with it all on! We put on the Eezi Awn Blade Rooftop Tent, Batwing 270 Awning, Show Cube, and a K9 Roofrack for some additional storage space! We took a short trip out to Dinokeng Nature Reserve, to test the setup out and it was just awesome!

Hi Adrian, Your Hilux Overland setup is coming along nicely! I know the thinking, planning and execution of such a setup is half the fun, other than building it! The most fun is had when you go out and use it! I have done 2 separate trips since my setup Phase 2.0 finalised, and it was a PLEASURE to use. Everything worked as it should have! Looking forward to your future trips!

I must say i love what you are doing with your Hilux, and the workmanship is looking fantastic. I love camping in my old volvo stationwagon, but i cant wait to build my first real overlander and get off the road! Both a used Land Cruiser or an Hilux has been in my mind, but with that canopy setup the Hilux makes a very compelling argument :) If i may ask, how is it for a taller guy to get in and out of the roof tent, im quite a tall and big guy but the only roof tents i have seen in real life has been the cheaper kind with not much room to get in and lay down. Cheers from Norway!
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
Thanks so much! It’s been a lot of work up to this point for sure from everyone’s side. If you are taller than 183cm then I think you need to look at the Stealth Rooftoptent from Eeziawn, it pops up a little bit more by the feet, will give you some extra length. Getting on and out is perfectly fine 👌🏻 I’m a big dude and don’t struggle at all. If you’re in Norway, I’m not sure how far Iceland is from you but if you happen to out that side any time visit www.jeppo.is/ maybe you can see one in the flesh or they can give you some advice 👌🏻

Excellent build Adrian. Looking very good. I note that so far you haven't added fittings on roof rack for water and fuel cans. Any reason why? Also what is total weight up top at the moment with racks, tent, awning and shower curtains? And can you give breakdown of weight of each piece of kit? Look forward to seeing it in more action. Cheers
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
Hey Martin, it is unnecessary for me add that weight to the roof, because I have a 55L onboard water tank and an additional 65L fuel tank as well. The weight of the rooftop accessories is in the region of 120kg

I would go over and watch Ronny Dahl video on pop riveting a roof rack to a Hilux...looks like any roof rack using rivets is compromised
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
The Eeziawn method has yet to fail; they use the highest quality rivets, and as you see here they rivet down and sikaflex the aluminium track down onto the roof; then the roofrack is mounted to the track, they also use 3 feet instead of 2 like Rhino (which distributes the dynamic load across a larger surface area along the track, meaning that each individual rivet takes less strain. They have never seen a failure to date; and that is on all the toughest trails throughout africa and the world. I think the situation with Ronny is certainly an interesting one, because Rivets were never a problem until now, this all stemmed from Tyler Thompsons video, but he had a full hardshell rooftoptent on his cab roofrack, and was doing hard wheeling; which I would never advise anyone to do anyways. My canopy has an incredibly high dynamic load rating on the roof; hence I put my rooftop tent on that. It seems to be an Aussie thing to not run a canopy and this is the side effect of that.
@shaunross6238
@shaunross6238 3 года назад
Great build. I'm just wondering how much clearance there is between the bottom of the tent and the roof rack on the cab. My concern is that the tent and roof rack will come into contact with each other on corrugations and axel twisting obstacles. I hope the tent is attached to the cab roof rack as this will definitely break something.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
There is a gap between the bottom of the tent and the rack on the cab, you cannot secure it to the car, because the tub and the cab move way too much, and something will break. But I will be watching the powercoating to see if anything touches or rubs, but there seems to be plenty of clearance at the moment

It may be a little late but there are 2 very important videos I’d say to watch. Both in regards to roof racks attached using rivets to hilux vehicles. One tells a storey of how the rack came away from the vehicle and the other addresses this issue.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
Hey Frankie; I appreciate your concern! Eezi Awn has been around for over 30 Years, they have yet to have a roofrack rip out of roof of a vehicle like what happened there in Aus. The fact that Mr Thompson had a hardshell rooftop tent mounted on his roofrack over his cab was already a bad idea; my rooftop tent is mounted to loadbars onto my canopy which has a dynamic load rating over 500kg; so in the case of the front roofrack; you have to load it up pretty significantly to bring it to the point of ripping the roofrack out the roof. Rivets are plenty strong for 99% of regular uses of a roofrack of that size. Sorry if this sounds hyper defensive, I have just gotten this alot recently. Yet for the past 15 years it hasnt been a problem until now. anyways, I am very confident in my Eezi Awn roofrack and how its installed. So you wont be seeing any panic attacks happening here :P
@MrFrankieb1
@MrFrankieb1 3 года назад
I didn’t realise the majority of the weight was on your canopy, not the rack until I watched a later video. I thought it best to say something rather than hear of another build ruined. Just figured, great vehicle build would be a huge shame.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 года назад
For sure 👍🏻 plenty people out there aren’t aware of these things to it’s good to bring awareness to it for sure 👌🏻 I learnt a lot from my Jimny days and try keep the weight on the roof down to an absolutely minimum where possible 👍🏻
