On a recent trip to Arizona I took the opportunity to try out Riders-Share motorcycle rental service. The motorcycle I chose to rent was a 2005 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic. I'd always wanted to spend some time riding and evaluating Harley Davidson touring model. These are my honest impressions, the good and the bad. No brand bashing.

I know this is a couple years old but just looked at it now. ( 2024 ) I have A 2005 I bought new, You are basically spot on with your analyses. What I did , starting with the second week was install a stage 2 Screaming Eagle kit and better flowing slip on's. Then came the back rest, hwy pegs and lower wind screen, On the factory screen, I was looking right at the top of it, so I had to look over or crouch down a bit to look thru. I have NO problem cruising at 75-80, the stage 2 kit most likely helps it along. I like riding with Sportster guys because there tanks are smaller, so we stop for fuel when I still have half a tank, I can rest my ass ! That seat is a KILLER, was always going to replace it , some day I will. Well 65,000 miles latter, other than the normal fix and maintain , it's still running like new and has not been a money pit. Thanks for the review and keep the wheels between the lines.

Hi Gary. Sorry it took me a bit to reply. Life, you know. This ride gave me a whole new perspective on Harley Davidson motorcycles. I can appreciate the older Harleys for what they are and for what they do well. Any of the negatives are personal and can be corrected. But, the one thing that can't be denied is that they have character. Tons of it! I have since ridden a 2023 Road Glide and the difference in power just blew me away........so did the price. LOL. I can say with some certainty, that I will own one at some point. Great bikes. Thanks for having a look at the video and for taking the time to leave a comment. I truly appreciate it. Be well, stay safe.

The Wing does what it does extremely well. But I have to say, so does the Harley. They just do different things. Different intended purposes. But being a lover of all things motorcycle, I appreciate both for what they are. Thanks for watching Brett. I appreciate it. Be well.

This was a very interesting video that you posted. You rented a 16 year old motorcycle which actually is very similar to my 2003 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. There are several things that Harley-Davidson has done over the years that are not represented on this motorcycle. First is the transmission. This generation has a 5 speed transmission, which means that at 70 mph you're doing 3000 rpm. I upgraded my transmission to a Screaming Eagle 6 speed transmission which gives you 10 more mph for the same rpm. That makes a HUGE difference in your comfort at highway speeds. The 88ci engine has no problem with the extra gearing. The first 5 gears are identical, with 5th gear being the same 1:1 ratio and 6th being an overdrive. In 2007, the Electra Glide frame was changed to a longer wheelbase with a wider rear tire and a 6 gallon gas tank. This longer frame addresses the passenger footboard proximity to the rider, but frankly I prefer the shorter wheelbase and 5 gallon gas tank for the esthetics. Don't forget that a 16 year old bike seat may have compressed somewhat and not provide the same support as when new. Most reviews of the Electra Glide find the seat comfort very good, but that is a personal opinion. After 119,000 miles, I had my seat and passenger backrest renewed. You don't say what year Goldwing you have, but since 2002 they have been known for their sporty and powerful nature. The 6 cylinder engine not only is powerful and smooth, but has a different character entirely when compared with a 2 cylinder air cooled V twin. The heat from the exhaust of the twin can be an issue on hot days when stopped in traffic for any length of time. All in all, it sounds like you enjoyed your experience with this bike. The feel and sound of a Harley-Davidson (not the Milwaukee 8) is unique. If you appreciate it, there's no substitute. If you don't, there's lots of alternatives. See ya on the road!
@HaveMotoWillTravel
@HaveMotoWillTravel 2 года назад
Thanks for adding to my knowledge. You know your Harley Davidson's I'd say. While it took me a morning to adjust to the laid back riding style of the bike, the sound and the ride (minus the seat) lulled me into a different place and time. A one day rental of a 16 yr old Electra Glide Ultra Classic left me saying........Ahh, now I get it. My Goldwing is a 2007. Unlike you, the previous owner wasn't putting on any significant miles. It was 12 yrs old and had clocked less than 9000 miles when I bought it. It's been a great machine but it's purpose built for covering lots of miles quickly and comfortably. The Harley spoke to me, the Goldwing transports me. Two very different rides. Thanks for watching the video, visiting the channel and taking the time to share your extensive knowledge in this comment. It's much appreciated.

Twin Cammers don't respect the M8's? As an old wrencher-builder you'll definitely appreciate the "lope" of the Twin-Cams however due to evolution (No reference to the "EVO") and regulations things had to change. No one can dispute the superiority of the M8's, their engines, power-potential and the new frames! @@HaveMotoWillTravel I just subscribed to you, so make that video on the M8! I've ridden them, including the 117. There's no doubt as to the power that they deliver. But I maintain that they don't have the character of the traditional Harley Engine. In my opinion Harley is giving in to the allure of the spec-sheet mentality. They are giving up the uniqueness of the brand, for the competitiveness of the spec-sheet. So then they will be competing on HP/Torque, quarter mile times, comfort, features, and cost. To many Harley Riders, they are selling their soul.

I can relate as older GWs 05 and 15 experience and older and newer HD 01,05,06,12,13;17.19,21. 88cc 103cc and M8 107 and 114cc newer has better power however back to an 05 ElectraGlide Cassic again as something about them just satisfies my riding experience. I have an 05 Ultra Classic that I bought new in April of 2005. I think your review of the Ultra Classic your rented is accurate. I will say that adding a Stage II upgrade to the engine greatly enhanced the performance of my Harley. I've never felt my bike straining at 80 or 90 MPH on the interstate. However, I had my stage II done before I took delivery of the bike from the dealership. I did ride a friend's stock 2005 Ultra Classic when it was new in 2005. The performance difference between my Stage II Ultra and my friend's stock Ultra was very noticeable. So I recommend an Stage II or Stage III upgrade for Ultra Classics of this era. They're great bikes, very durable and well made. I have no knowledge about the performance of the later model Ultra Classics. Hopefully the stock versions came with more power. Great review and thanks for posting it. Ride safe!

Welcome to the channel Ken, and thank you very much. I'm glad you watched the video and left me such a great comment. I think that getting the Stage ll update straight out of the chute was a good move on your part. Harley's are great bikes with so much potential. I guess that a big part of the culture is making the bike your own. Probably half the fun of owning one is all the accessories and performance upgrades that you can do. Most non Harley owners don't get that part of the attraction. I think it may be Harley's biggest strength and the reason for their longevity, owner loyalty, and overall success. Thanks again for checking out the channel. Much appreciated.

Been waiting for this video. Great honest review. It was an older bike compared to the new Harley's with more power. This is what I like about the Gold Wings, excellent power out the box with no modifications. I agree both bikes are different type of rides. I ridden both and you must treat them both differently. I know several Harley riders that have ridden Wings and loved them, but said they wouldn't purchase one. i like all bikes, and I too have likes and dislikes about each one. Great job Rich.

I'm of the same mind regarding modifications. I like to leave it the way they designed it and decide if it's worth owning. Every bike has its own capabilities. Very nice! I own and ride an 02 Harley Electra Glide and an 08 GL1800. I love them both for very different reasons. My 02 Harley is very similar to the 05 you rented. She’s an oldie but goodie! I do think you nailed the overall assessment of this bike. I am not sure if the owner of that bike did any performance updates that would enhance the overall quality of the ride. I added Stage 1 and 2 to mine which is essentially a more robust exhaust system - stage 1. ( I have Cobra True-Dual’s) and for stage 2, a beefed up hydraulic cam chest with performance cams and a higher flow oil pump. I believe I am squeezing out 100HP out of my little Twin-Cam 88 which is what you were riding. I can cruise all day long at 80mph at 3200 rpm’s and still have plenty of passing power if needed. As far as comfort, my wife no longer enjoys riding on the Harley long-distance. Hence my GoldWing ownership.

The foot is doing well, I can walk and work on the farm, Still lots of flexibility and strength to develop though, and the swelling is still enough I cannot wear a regular pair of boots, but it is getting there. Glacier is about 14 hours (800 miles) south east of me. I am close to the geographical center of British Columbia and Glacier is on our south east corner. Depending on the growing season July could be in the middle of Haying season as well, that is a bit hard to predict. Last year I started haying July 1 and the year before was August 1. If haying is going well I can possibly get away even during for a short time. Are you coming north into Canada? or going further west? I could be on the US border near Osoyoos/Oroville in about 8 hours. At this point I know that there are still some Covid restrictions coming into Canada, and it is hard to say if they will be lifted. Haha, also have a BMW GT1200 for when I want to go somewhere, fast. Arizona is not the sort of place I ever want to visit but the mountains of Idaho and Pacific NW have my attention... I might do that trip on the Electra Glide and just enjoy the old US highways, state and county roads. Good review for me as I'll be looking for an HD of that vintage. I've been riding almost 50 years, the last 20 on my '86 Guzzi LeMans. That bike has rearsets, clip-ons and I just don't fold up to fit as easily as I did when I bought it new. I use it for travelling and 600 mile days are over for me. A few years ago my wife rented me a 2014 Street Glide and I loved it. Mostly. I'm 6'1", 270lbs and felt instantly comfortable. It has the 103ci engine and six speed and a very good handling chassis. I found myself at a comfortable 80+ on the interstate and very stable in unfamiliar Ozark mountain roads. I did 600 miles in a day on the SG no problem. What didn't I like? The front suspension. For the price, I don't expect the clanking from the fork that I noticed on rough roads and also the rattling inside the fairing. Would I want one? Yes! But finances have me looking for something pre-Rushmore, which I think was a great update to HD. One thing I do not like about Gold Wings is the limited foot space and position due to the large flat-six. Yes, you do get used to things, just as I got used to not hitting the fairing lowers on my R100RT when putting my foot down. Now there was a great bike. BMW R100RT. Might just need another one!

Thanks for such a great comment Erwin. My friend just bought a Guzzi. Very nice bike. I've always thought of Guzzis as the bike everybody loves but nobody buys. Such an iconic brand and always designed with beauty in mind. I know that the Goldwing has always been a bit of a challenge for taller riders. My son is 6'1" and has commented on feeling cramped when he rides my Wing. At 5'8", I have no such problems. I've been itching to try an RT. I hear all good things about them, other than some final drive problems a few years ago, but I've never gotten the chance to ride one. An older vintage Harley may be in my future. The sound alone is worth the price of entry. I could live with the shortcomings. And with the most extensive choice of accessories in the business, there's nothing that can't be fixed. Thank you for having a look at the video and my channel. I especially appreciate the time you spent leaving me the comment. All the best, be safe.

The bike is a great bike now days later models are amazing but i encountered many down sides when riding it on a 7k mile trip through mexico and i then realized they are capable of alot but i wouldn't take the same trip twice on it! Theres better bikes for that

I've learned that every bike has a kind of personality. They each do things well and fall short in other areas. In the end, they impose their riding style on the rider. I get laid back time on my Intruder, because that's what it's good at providing. I get comfortable high speed mile crunching on my Goldwing because that's what it's good at providing. Each bike has its "happy place". If that's where I ride them, I'm happy too. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment.

@HaveMotoWillTravel well said something about bikes most put a smile on my face, it has to be very uncomfortable for me not to enjoy a ride on any bike for the most im happy just to ride out and back safe every time 😀 thanks and keep the content commin hehe

Riding a Harley, did you quit waving at other riders?😎. Just kidding, I know you wouldn’t wave. Curious, how does it compare to your Voyager? Wouldn’t they be more in the same class? I love all bikes but to me, two best sounding bikes are Harley’s and Honda in-line 4’s. Interesting video Rich, enjoyed it!

😂😂 I understand now. Too busy being miserable about my ass to wave. As far as comparing to the Voyager......no comparison. I never lacked power or comfort on the Voyager. It's a 2002 but really 1986 technology and it still amazes me how good it still is. But, something about that Harley rumble. It takes over. You shift into a different mentality. Thanks for watching my friend. I hope you're well.

The 05 platform If your not rich is the absolute best harley I have a 05 ultra classic and by god I can still work on it!!I would love to find a low mileage st1300! Another thing is that large windscreen!! I put a 8inch on mine.

That's kind of why I was looking at that vintage Harley. I'm certainly not wealthy and it's in my price range. Got the dealer hounding me to try a new one. We'll see. St1300 is one of my favorite bikes. Good luck in your search. Thanks for watching the video. I appreciate it along with the comment.

That’s how I feel about my 02 Electra Glide. I know where every nut and bolt goes and I have the better quality Timkin bearings installed as OEM. My machine was right before Harley started to cut back on certain quality parts. I did rebuild my cam chest though and went with Feuling and S&S components. She’s hard to kill now.

My 08 ultra classic has the 96” motor and she flies and likes to be between 80-90mph

I've heard the same from several riders. I'm planning on renting a late model ultra classic for a couple of days just to check it out. Thanks for watching the video and especially for taking the time to leave a comment. Much appreciated.

I wonder if the fact that you used a rental motorbike should be factored into your overall impression of Harley Electra Glides. Could be you just lucked out and got a rental bike that hasn't be properly maintained and it's not a true representation of what this bike model has to offer? I might add that I've got no connections with the company, nor do I own a Harley.

I think the bike was represtative of that Era Electra Glide. Most knowledgeable Harley guys have suggested that the new Harleys are quite different. I recently test rode a 2023 Road Glide and the difference was amazing! The power on the new one blew me away. The 2005 was a very competent bike bike and after I got my head adjusted to riding it the right way, completely enjoyable. Thanks for watching the video. Happy New Year.

The reviewer had a jaded mindset before he even sat on the Harley. Better to be objective and less whiny. This was a touring bike review. Feedback on luggage capacity, fuel range, etc. would have been helpful. Better luck next time.

Thanks for watching and for your comment. I was more interested in giving my impressions of the Harley as a Goldwing owner/rider than I was in a review/comparison of the two bikes spec for spec. Those kinds of reviews are everywhere and frankly all that info can be read online. As far as being objective goes, my impressions are subjective. Everyone's impressions are subjective and my mindset wasn't jaded unless you think that merely owning a Goldwing may ruin every other bike for me. You might have a point there. If my mindset was actually jaded, I don't think I would have changed my opinion 1/2 way through the day. Maybe you should have watched the whole video since many viewers before you have commented on how fair I was. Lastly, I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to have better luck with next time. But thank for your well wishes, I'll try not to sound whiny in the future.

You dont know how to ride a Harley. They will run 90 to 100 all day. I do it on a 2016 flstc 103 with 60000 on the clock. Two up with both saddle bags full and tail pack. No worries.

I'm not quite sure what's different about riding a Harley and i think I was turning the throttle in the right direction unless a Harley is different. I don't doubt that a 2016 will run 90 to 100 all day. Matter of fact, this proves your point. Check this out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MJjp_XYWkn4.html. But I can say for sure that the 2005 I was riding wouldn't. Thanks for watching.
