EPDM Roofing Install Tips

Last fall I installed a new EPDM rubber roof. It seems like a great product for a flat roof like I have on my workshop but, it was the first time I have worked with it and there was a bit of a learning curve. If this is a project you plan on doing yourself, hopefully this video will point out a few things to watch out for while working with this material, and give you some better results than what I ended up with.

Thanks for putting this up, you didn't have to and you are obviously placing yourself in the firing line but it is a very useful video for anyone who thinks they can just throw down a sheet of rubber.

Thanks, I am glad you thought it was useful. Yep there is definitely a learning curve with installing EPDM.

I agree! takes alot of balls to admit when you fooked up. Its like this, we all make mistakes at some point in life, thats why they put rubbers at the end of pencils. Nobody is perfect! but fair fucks to him for doing this video. Its shows it isnt as easy as it may seem to others!

I agree, but a smaller flat roof as opposed to a large area with wall perimeter and chimney stack should be do able for the budding d.i.yer

Classic homeowner’s mistake. When gluing you have to wait a for the glue adhesives to flash off the roof deck and the membrane. Meaning touching it and its sticky but none sticks to the finger. You’re looking at gas bubbles everywhere Glue was not dry enough to roll membrane on roof which creates gas bubbles. FYI so come silicone caulk is chunk! Always use a butyl caulk which is real rubber. Box stores now carry it Quad Caulk.

Check with your local pond store. The Firestone EPDM PondGard is basically the same membrane as the roofing EPDM GeoGard (or vice versa) but rebranded. They even use the same seaming products: Firestone QuickSeam splicing tape, QuickPrime primer, QuickSeam cover tape and Firestone lap sealant of AP sealant. Here's a response from a Firestone specialist when I asked what's the difference between GeoGard and RubberGard, "GeoGard was simply a change in brand or added branding for the geosynthetics market and adherence to ASTM standard as well as GRI standards.. Also, size of EPDM rolls reflect requirements for larger sections in geo applications. Pondgard was to be marketed to the landscape and backyard pond/Home Depot markets. I believe both have similar properties but GeoGard must be tested to meet ASTM D 7465 and min GRI."

Pond liners are different to EPDM and can't be used on roofs. It hasn't any UV protection and will Shrink over time.

I did most of the prep work myself, but did have one person helping with putting down the glue and moving the 10'x25' pieces of EPDM in place.

Omg man that’s not an air bubble that’s a major hazard! No joke your about to have a rough next year!
@planbuildplay8528
@planbuildplay8528 3 года назад
Can you let me know why you would consider this a major hazard, other than that section being more likely to tear at some point? Its been up there a couple years already at this point and no issues yet.

@@planbuildplay8528 If you run into problems, you can handle it by cutting the membrane and seaming a new piece of membrane. Here's how to patch the membrane ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kIxHnYW0wo0.html

Air bubbles aren't "major hazards".. air bubbles usually happen when the glue on the rubber and iso board wasn't given enough time to dry... them bubbles you see are caused by the fumes given off from the glue drying the rest of the way

You would put EPDM again?
@planbuildplay8528
@planbuildplay8528 3 года назад
Hopefully I don't have to worry about that for another 15-20 years, but yes. When this EPDM needs replacing I would probably use EPDM again if there isn't a better flat roof material by then.

How did you get rid of the ripples on the membrane by the way thanks for the video
@planbuildplay8528
@planbuildplay8528 3 года назад
Most of the ripples were removed during the install by slowly pushing the membrane into the glue and sweeping it or using a roller. The adhesive is a contact glue so once the EPDM hits it there isn't a way to re-position it. The ripples in the video are still there.
@JillofAllTrades2
@JillofAllTrades2 3 года назад
Check out Firestone's video on how to repair "fish mouth" which is a ripple where the cover strip meets the EPDM membrane. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LL-5ks1orrQ.html

Yea, I didn't really think recording the install at the time. This EPDM roofing actually replaced a modified bitumen roof. I guess I'll have to record the next roof install, hopefully that won't be for a few years yet.

@stevenmanchulenko3984
@stevenmanchulenko3984 Год назад
These repairs are all wrong. Very temporary. For one thing, you can’t let silicon caulking touch EPDM. It eats away at it over time. There is special caulking that’s designed to be used with EPDM. All EPDM tapes MUST be used with EPDM primer or they will just peel off eventually. Where the EPDM goes over the top of the wall and hangs down on the outside, if there’s no metal cap to hold it down then you have to use termination bars attached to the wall with tap cons. Or at the very least attach the EPDM to the outer wall by fully adhering it to the wall using EPDM bonding adhesive, which is basically a glorified contact cement. Still not really right but better than nothing. None of the repairs you did will last for years. That’s a promise.

Honestly I'm not a fan off EPDM .. but the issue here is poor fitting ! And the fitting starts with the substrate it's fitted too being correct. Then the right application off glue and the membrane being applied at the right time. If you do it yourself after watching online videos and reading manuals honestly how could you ever expect to fit it like a professional would ? 99% of the time it's not the product it's the installer...

Yeah, this was definitely all done wrong. Not bad for someone who doesnt know this product but it is definitely installed wrong. Lots of mistakes, and that wont be warranted by any of the manufacturers of epdm. Just being honest.
