The fresh Kills Landfill was opened in 1936, and is an unlined landfill built on wetlands, with all kinds of stuff leeching into the groundwater. It's been blamed for the abnormally high cancer rates, particularly leukemia, in the neighborhoods bordering it. Turning landfils into parks is something that's fairly common, as you can't build on them for at least a century. It's done by "capping" the landfill with at least 15-20 feet of clean soil. Fresh Kills isn't the only former landfils they've done this to in the city Flushing Meadow's/Corona in Queens also used to be a Landfill.

For me this vlog was full of surprises. Who would have thought that you can find such natural beauty and countryside / small town atmosphere so close to Manhattan, and such nice bike paths? Even some beautiful beaches! So good and characteristic of you to also talk about your environmental concerns about the landfill that is going to be turned into a recreation park. Pity there’s no bike lane on the Verrazzano bridge! It would have been nice if you could have taken the bridge on your way back to Manhattan. In the Italian restaurant you talk about having trouble speaking Italian. Do you mean that you’re losing the ability to find the right Italian words? I think that comes back immediately when you’re visiting your family in Italy (hopefully very soon! 🙂).
@WhatashameMaryJane
@WhatashameMaryJane 4 года назад
You actually gave me a reason to check out the bike lane situation on the Verrazzano bridge and there's still none. They're still pushing the MTA for solving the awkward situation nyc.streetsblog.org/2020/08/14/unidentified-verrazzano-bridge-cyclist-points-the-way-to-what-the-region-needs/ This trip was full of pleasant surprises for me too :) Yes I can't recall the right Italian words to express what I need to say. I must admit it's a very uncomfortable and almost scary sensation. I tried it before with German a couple of years ago, when I realized I was losing it because I stopped practicing, but as sad as it was, it was still a foreign language for me. I never thought it could happen with my mother language too.

As a kid used to go the city dump next to Kennedy Airport, now a neighborhood according to the maps. Since it was close to Aqueduct Racetrack there were abandoned cars useful for their copper wiring. (Suggestion: if you're gonna win big on a bet, don't broadcast it.) Initially, I wondered why there were dog paws and tails over the place, until one day a station wagon pulls up and lets out four geese, dare I say a gackle. Within seconds up from the debris hundreds if not a thousand rats pile on them. Less than half a minute the pile slowly disappears. I walked over to observe only webbed duck feet. Moral of the story: Rats. If you live on a landfill you're gonna have rats, brown tunneling, Black Norwegian (think of the Plagues), rodents In addition to seepage into the ground water table for a distance downgrade and air pollution. And, if you notice fire hydrants sinking into the ground or cracks from your house settling unevenly, check your property appraisal office for any pre-existing surveys or plot maps. With people leaving the city, restaurants closed, the subway rodents will start looking for food in a wider area. Get a cat(s). Long digression ahead. With the current situation developing and the shrinking city government buget, letting people to fend for themselves from two and four legged rats, some lessons I learned from the city, Rats are smarter and craftier than most people. They learn and adapt quickly so if you put out a trap they'll be a step or two ahead in avoiding it. They have very good hearing and sense of smell. While appearing near sighted tactically traveling close to walls, they have sight beyond our spectrum, ultraviolent I believe, for night vision. Ha, they own the night. Use an ultraviolet light in the dark to find their urine trail markings they navigate by. Or, for the previous tenant's nocturnal proclivities. So, put talcum powder along wall baseboards to track them and identify their type of footprints. First put out rolled-up balls of peanut butter and oatmeal, their favorite food. Wait a few days, four or more, until their guard is down then using disposable rubber gloves put in rodent poison. Note, the two common rats, brown and black, have their own food preferences. Yea, it might stink but Hantavirus is a life long ailment. No fun. It's iffy buying traps as they'll learn quickly. Consult your local USDA or university for information. They're usually a wealth of free pragmatic information for your area. Rats avoid the scent of cats. Better, have cats. Or, hire a professional Pest Control business since the longer you wait the worst and dire the infestation will get. Don't wanna wake with your nose and ear cartilage chewed off. It's true.

I think we get a bad rep because many parts of the Island remind people too much of the types of places they were trying to escape coming to New York in the first place. Starting at 43:17, Front Street that was part of my regular bike commute to work via the ferry (nopw I get to work from home except for one day a week). Also the Alice Austen House (historical colonial era dwelling, once home to a posthumously famous Staten Island photographer who inherited the family home where she lived from the late 1800s to the 1950s) was right there, you should have stopped by (unless you did at another part of the video? I haven't watched the whole thing beginning to end.) While you were here, as an Italian, did you have any opportunity to investigate the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum? If you haven't, neither have I, even though I've lived close by to it and have lived here for most of my 53 years. Still, Giusseppe Garibaldi lived there for a while when he was in exile, with his friend, Antonio Meucci, reputedly the inventor of the telephone before Alexander Graham Bell stole the credit (so some people claim, I don't wanna get involved). That was also not far from minute 43:17.

Such a pleasure to watch this video MJ, you constantly provide a way of doing things, that really agrees with how I like to watch video's!. At first I thought that 50 minutes was going to be quite a lot to take in, but of course it wasn't really, and as usual, I never got bored in the slightest!. Staten Island is certainly a very beautiful, and interesting destination, and is certainly the kind of place that agrees with me very much as well!. I think it's awesome that you can take this ferry for free, and certainly beats the alternative, of having to pay mega bucks for the bridge trip! (it suddenly occurred to me, that maybe the bridge is subsidizing the ferry?). I think, if you were a local though, the cost of getting to the Island by car, would be a constant bugbear!. One thing I was wondering about, is about the subscriber that you met... is she an Italian girl too? (I'm afraid that the audio was pretty bad in that section, and I couldn't quite hear what she said, but she did seem to have that accent!). I was wondering if that cemetery, was perhaps a war grave cemetery, as it would be quite unusual for civilians to be buried this way (whereas the government would pay the cost, to having these highly regimented plots, looking perfect, for all time!). As for that giant landfill site... turning it into a park, is generally something pretty commonly done here, and I would have thought, probably also in many other parts of the world too!. I'm not sure what the alternative would be really, as you certainly wouldn't want to use the land for any structural use, as there's always the possibility of some subsidence happening. Pretty sad though, that there's human remains involved... a landfill's not the place for that!. Anyway, a really lovely video MJ, I actually watched it twice, and with pleasure!.

It's always a pleasure to read your comments Andrew. I didn't think about the contrast between the free ferry and the expensive toll for the bridge! I prefer it like this than the opposite 😊 The girl Beatrice is Italian from Verona. I'm sorry about how the audio turned out, I didn't realize it would have been like this. That's always the trick with audio: you're not able to hear the result until you go back home and replay the clips... Turning landfills into parks is common in the US!?!? I'm sorry but it sounds pretty absurd to me. I wish somebody proved me wrong. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting, I'm very glad you enjoyed!!

In my yard in suburban Northern Virginia I see deer, foxes, skunks, raccoons, the odd coyote, all sorts of birds of prey, none of them are afraid of people. That's amazing!!! It's something I've been discovering this summer actually and I love it! Where I come from wild animals rarely come as close to humans that we are able to see them. @chrisgoshey7388
@chrisgoshey7388 4 года назад
@@WhatashameMaryJane We do hunt deer but it is a very controlled hunt, only at certain times of the year mainly autumn and winter. The rest of the year they know nobody will be hunting them so they are more relaxed around people. Also, most hunting in the US takes place rural areas so deer that live in cities and suburbs don't have as much to fear from humans. Smaller animals like raccoons and skunks aren't hunted these days unless they make a serious nuisance of themselves and then they are usually trapped and released into the deep woods. Since coyotes keep their numbers down this is rare. So city animals have pretty much nothing to fear from people. By the way, next time you are outside look up between the buildings, peregrine falcons LOVE large American cities and they can be a lot of fun to watch as they fly around and hunt between the skyscrapers!

Going the opposite direction down Bay St towards Ft Wadsworth and the beach gets you out of there faster. You also miss areas like Silver lake, High Rock, and the south island parks. Great Kills (south of Cedar Grove where you entered,) Wolfs Pond, and Bloomingdale parks each have their own charm. As for the dump, they did the same thing in Brooklyn shore, building a park over garbage. 11:00 American graves are mostly uniform because Americans don't want to think about death and so don't make as many arrangements for it. Their family is then left to decide and will usually choose the easiest, least-choice-effort option presented to them which happens to be mass-produced, and thus cheapest, cookie-cutter grave markers. Older grave-yards, with most graves before say 1940, will have a greater diversity of markers including some really large and fabulous ones, since death was more common then and people were more religious and thus more conscious of what they wanted after their deaths.
