Starting from Inwood Hill Park, I cross The Bronx West to East to arrive to City Island. After a brief visit at Orchard Beach, I cycle back to Manhattan through South Bronx and I stop to rest in the best spot to enjoy the summer in NYC, Randall’s Island.

Some of the questions you raised about why New York City is the way it is are being explored in the Urban Studies Program at Fordham University. You rode right by it I think - it is across from the botanical gardens. If you are interested in further study, take a look at the program website. There are some resources there, including links to the faculty where you could follow publication streams. They also hold general interest seminars, lectures, and so on. You asked some profound questions that are not easily, simply, or briefly answered. But there are people working on them.

As a person born in Bologna, Italy of 2 Italian-American parents from NYC, I totally know where you're coming from about the "aesthetics" of many places in the USA (or lack thereof). I'm not offended at all, you are exactly on point. Most spaces in the USA are built for private access, private reasons, and private profit. Excellent observations. I have lots of friends from Italy who visit NYC a lot and none have articulated this. I've been waiting my whole life for a European to be so honest about this point.

"Most spaces in the USA are built for private access, private reasons, and private profit." You wrote exactly what I was trying to explain in the video, but struggled to find the words. That's the main sensation that I had, thanks for the comment.

Thank you for these powerful personal thoughts. NYC is amazing, but it’s also a microcosm of America. In many places you can see vast inequality, where the gap between the top and bottom is far greater than what you see in places like Europe. Industrial areas where a disproportionate number of people of color live (and are exposed to greater health dangers), and the privatization of public space are two things that you saw on your trip that are manifestations of the disparities in the US. Appreciate your honesty in this video!

Thank you for appreciating and not attacking. It's a rare thing nowadays. :) The USA are famous for their democracy and democracy is strongly connected to the idea of equality. That's why I was expecting to see more equality in this country.

24:01 The return trip map. I agree with you about City Island being a bit disappointing to visit for an NYC outsider. There is an elementary school on City Island Ave., which has a public ball field in the back; I seem to remember that being a decent place to see the shore. It's also a good place to view Hart Island from, but that's a whole other story.

Lol. I'm glad your honest, I was thinking that city island kind of reminded me of Connecticuts coast, it's not that interesting, the beaches can be nice though, you have to find the hidden corners. When i first got to the coastline from the farmington canal trail through new haven to the shore, it wasn't that interesting. But connecticuts inland rail trails are very pretty, I still have to write you that list, I'll post that comment in your live feed post of comments. Oh, congrats on trying those pizzas, lol 😘

In Australia, we've had compulsory helmet laws since the 1990s. These laws were founded on the concerns of our medical community; driven by what they eventually proved were avoidable head injuries. Decades later, Australians actually have a cultural aversion to people riding anything (cycles, scooters, skateboards, jet skis, et al) without a helmet, particularly children and the elderly. It may have cost $80, but, that's nothing if it saves you from a catastrophic injury. Stay safe, Mary Jane :-)

South Bronx is actually a lot cleaner and safer than it used to be. Everything is relative though. If you've never been to a place it's natural to feel unsafe or on guard....especially as a woman. I feel you. Video of South Bronx in 70s and 80s. Collapsed buildings everywhere, empty lots, garbage, fires (landlords would pay someone to set their buildings on fire so they could collect insurance money), gangs. So compared to back then, now the South Bronx is nice, and much safer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AtI-En92Xso.html

I'm so glad you discovered Inwood Hill Park. It's a secret that few NYers know about. That path through the Bronx looked kind of dangerous with all the highways. Don't worry about offending people you're being honest about your travel experiences. City Island always felt like a place to go for the entire day to eat seafood and explore. I've never been there but i know i would expect that island to feel different than any place in NY. I would, for example, expect the architecture planning for the houses to be uniform, in other words, all the same designs. .. when that bike route ended suddenly in the south Bronx felt so hopeless, thats a terrible feeling of being stuck in a place you dont know especially in a notoriously bad neighborhood. The music you added contributed to the mood. I felt the same way when last summer, I decided to bike from where I live in Queens to Bronx Botanical Gardens. Oh my God that bench you found on Randalls Island is picture perfect! Im usually on the other side, in Queens, undernearth the Hellgate bridge taking pictures, eating a snack and taking a break on the rocks. Great vlog. I love the history facts you provide. Peace and Love.

To really take advantage of the boroughs outside of Manhattan you need to hang with locals from those places. You will be SUPER surprised what you will find, most people that actually live in Manhattan are not from there, most NYers are from the surrounding areas of the island.

Awwww 🙁 My borough... I believe you could sense the energy of division and negativity planted here from times of the past, when city planners saw this borough as only a passing-by space and when neighborhoods where destroyed to make way for those horrible highways that emit so much darn pollution. I've lived here since I came as a kid and yea I agree it was not Manhattan... but, thankfully as you noticed, neighborhoods vary, and you learn to adjust... on a positive note the newer generations are refocusing and can only improve this borough and make it shine. Despite the past, and present the soul of this place is beautiful, it's just been hurt... I'm glad you made the video though and that you are well. I use to play soccer with dad and mom in Inwood Hill Park as a kid it was a good place to balance out the hard, monochromatic scenes of concrete and asphalt of everyday life. Best of luck in future videos.

I have to agree with you about city island , it's a bit underwhelming. We go here to dinner alot but not much else. As far a swimming in the water, the water quality is much better than it used to be and is tested regularly. I live in a private community across the bay from city island and we have a beach that I use regularly. I don't like cycling through the south Bronx because there are hardly any dedicated bike lanes and motorists ignore you. If you ever go back to orchard beach, you can get back on the 6# train from the Pelham bay stop

Beauty may well be in the eye of the beholder. I grew up in the Bronx and jokingly tell my high rent Manhattan clients that I am "from the provinces." Yes, the Bronx is in many ways unregulated and undeveloped but growing up here in the 50's was a page out of "Huckleberry Finn". By the late 1800's visionary New Yorkers saw clearly that the NYC natural landscape was quickly falling prey to overdevelopment and private enterprise. By the turn of the century over 20,000 acres had been set aside for public use, the vast majority of it in the Bronx. The Bronx now contains the largest total parkland acreage in the City of New York, some of it untouched since colonial times. Pelham Bay Park alone is three times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park and contins nearly 2,772 acres of river, upland forest, and salt marsh. Situated where several climate zones meet, the diversity of this one preserve is worth a closer look. But there is more. The Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo, Van Cortland Park and countless green-ways and shorelines bring total Bronx natural preserves to nearly 7,000 acres or roughly 25% of the total borough landmass. In an otherwise overcrowded city, this figure is staggering. Since Tuscany is not in the cards, count me in for the Bronx.

I think most foreigners who come to America for the first time have the same experience as you. They expect America to be this wonderful magical place that they've seen in countless Hollywood movies and TV shows that they watched for so many years growing up, then when they come here and it's not at all like that they're like, that's it? So my piece of advice to people who want to come to America for the first time is this, lower your expectations and stop watching too many Hollywood movies! LOL

Excellent video Mary Jane!, there was so much variety, and so many things that happened in this video, that I doubt if I can remember everything. Once again though, you show us that you have a natural ability in producing really great content, and it's rare for any one moment to be actually boring!. I was just the other day looking at some of your oldest video's, and even there I was impressed by how you edited and presented your work, and any faults were merely simple technical oversights. Somebody here commented on the history aspect (of your video's), and I have to agree, it's something I am always fascinated about too, but something you can't always pay lip service to, if the history sometimes demands a more detailed explanation. Your reading of the plaque about the purchase of Manhattan by the dutch, reminds me of what happened here in New Zealand with the local indigenous people we call the 'Maori', at the start of colonization in the late 1830's. In both of these cases, vast amounts of land were exchanged for often simple, and sometimes useful material items, to which any of us we would think was crazy! (understanding their concept and motives for doing this though, is actually very eye opening about what we can understand about ourselves!). Anyway, to continue... the trip through the natural forested area's was beautiful, and all things considered, I would have expected to see many more people, as this was not really all that far from civilization. The bike trails were very nicely appointed as you got closer to the city, and as you say, this was really more like some area's in Europe, and were a nice tonic to the straight streets, and concrete vista's of Manhattan!. All that being said, getting to the southern Bronx, was something of a contrast to these bike trails, and you did a marvelous job of making us feel your discomfort with the situation. Once you got to Randall's Island though, it was clear that the tension had subsided, and your favorite spot was now something of an oasis!. It was interesting for me that you then played Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" (twice!), which is an album that I have owned on vinyl for years, and also appreciate very much indeed! (great taste MJ!). I can see that after the ride that you had, this melancholic masterpiece, would be quite suitably reflective!. Anyway, it's now getting late, so I'd better leave things here, and say my appreciation for your efforts. Thanks so much for this long and quality video, I hope that many people will come to notice it, over these coming weeks and months... it does deserve some recognition I think!.

Andrew, I appreciate your comment immensely. It's very interesting for me to hear what a viewer sees in my video, what he notices and what parts, moments or features he likes most. And thank you for the big compliments! I've never been into that sort of songwriter/folk music à la Bob Dylan, but Nick Drake was an incredible talent. The Pink Moon is my favorite of his three albums and yet the most minimal in its components, only voice and guitar. It is an absolute masterwork, and as I stated in the video, every time I listen to it I get goosebumps. Interesting your consideration about the Maori. It's also been West-Northern Europeans colonizing territories where the people were probably living much more in contact with the nature than with the urbanized environment, right? I'd like you to explain further your statement "(understanding their concept and motives for doing this though, is actually very eye opening about what we can understand about ourselves!)"

@@WhatashameMaryJane Thank you so much for your in-depth comments MJ, I loved hearing about your thoughts on the "Pink Moon" album, and how you think of it in relation to his other albums. Well, this just confirms to me that we think alike, because "Pink Moon" has always been my favorite too!. I agree with all that you said, and understand that this album was his no compromise album, and he finished it on his own terms, before sadly committing suicide. By some coincidence, I have just recently started reading an unauthorized biography of this incredibly talented, and mysterious musician. It is incredibly well researched, and seeks to understand the man, who virtually no one really knew (not even his own family it seems!). I've only read the first couple of chapters, but am looking forward to getting back into it, after I've finished another book I'm reading. After I finished my piece to you yesterday, I just suddenly remembered his song from the album "Bryter Later", titled "Thoughts of Mary Jane"... is this coincidence or not!. Anyway, I love that song too, it's just so incredibly well written, and timeless!. Also totally agree with your thoughts on Bob Dylan, who I've always considered an intellectual, rather than a true soul stirring musician (neither his music or voice have ever appealed to me very much). Tomorrow I will attempt to address the 2nd part of your reply to me, as I think this is worth mentioning in some greater detail... but not tonight, as it's now too late!. I think it's important that I try to do my best to explain what I meant by my comments, because I know they were a little vague... Ok, see ya then.

@@WhatashameMaryJane Hi MJ... yes, about the book, it's called"Darker than the Deepest Sea - The Search for Nick Drake", by Trevor Dann. I picked it up at a local charity shop for next to nothing, and decided to give it a quick sample, before reading it fully... and I was immediately hooked!. I have read a few accounts of Nick's life story before, but this was definitely bringing up a lot of information that I wasn't at all aware of, so I know this guy's done his homework!. When I've finished with it, I would be happy to post it your way, as you might be able to gain some valuable insight, into what inspired his musical creations. Also, while on the subject, I accidentally gave you some incorrect info last night, as "Thoughts of Mary Jane" was on the album "Five Leaves Left", rather than "Bryter Later". I simply had my wires crossed, with the song "Hazy Jane" (part 1), which was actually the song I was referring to (though "Thoughts of Mary Jane", is a wonderful song too!). Now, about the other thing I was going to mention, which was a brief history lesson about the colonization of New Zealand (some context for you, regarding the land deals done with the pre European 'Maori' population). As I said before, this sounded similar to the Manhattan land deals done with the dutch, and I can't say if any of the same circumstances did actually apply, but here's some of what I know about our own history. Having read a book myself, about what actually happened, by one of those involved, I can get a good idea of the circumstances that surrounded this land deal. The plan to colonize New Zealand, was actually conceived inside a prison cell, by a man called Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who was a convicted child kidnapper. He was a well educated man, but became infatuated by a young under-aged lady, who he wished to marry, but the circumstances wouldn't allow. Anyway, he decided to kidnap her, but was then caught, and sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence, where he had nothing to do, except plan for a life outside of prison, where he could make up for lost time, by creating his lasting legacy. He dreamed up this scheme, where he would sell land plots to colonists, from the yet unseen shores of New Zealand (at that time very few people had ever been here, except a few whalers, and the early explorers like James Cook). He somehow managed to get the British government involved, and was commissioned a sailing vessel, to scout for suitable land for selling to his clients (the government also receiving their own cut from this deal). After taking some time to select the eventual settlement (my home city Wellington), he managed to strike up a friendship with a local Maori chief, who controlled the strategic area. This 'Paramount Chief' was very receptive to the idea of Europeans moving to this area, as he was constantly under threat, by other warring tribes, who would steal his land, and kill his people. A deal was done, where a ship load of provisions (such as guns, tools, blankets etc), were exchanged for a large quantity of freehold land, which the first settlers were able to farm, build houses, and grow crops. Exchanging of these provisions, was more the idea of the Europeans, rather than the Maori, as the Maori had no real concept of buying, and selling in their culture. Maori tribes would often barter with other friendly tribes in their area, by exchanging things like food, or other necessary items for subsistence. This early deal with the Maori, worked out well for both parties, as they both lived quite harmoniously together, and benefited from each others knowledge base. It was only later, that some disputes arose, which then led to a number of regional skirmishes, which were labelled the 'Maori Wars'. So anyway, that's a very brief overview of what happened back then, and European concepts were to later clash with Maori understandings on a number of issues, which have not all been fully resolved, even now!. It's this presumption by the European majority, that I was referring to in my comment.

@@andrewbadart3827 Fascinating story, that I'd never heard before. Hopefully nobody except you is going to read through all these comments, so I can tell you - quite shyly - that bartering is my ideal of economy. It must sound terribly naive but I don't care: I love the genuineness and the the frankness of an economy that exchanges value for value, without giving prices that are too often not mirroring the actual value.
