I once seen two guys on gravel bikes climbing up while I was on my mtn bike, and thought to myself these guys are crazy riding up here? Now just got my new gravel bike and gonna attempt this same ride and possibly take it up to Wilson, who knew🤣👌

I used to drive the road in high school. Cheney Trail was open in the 70's to cars.

Nice ride. Continue on up to Mt. Wilson and then drop down to Henninger Flats to Altadena. I did two loops of this ride starting near Chaney Trail in the same day (RT 7:35) when I was training for La Ruta de Los Conquistadores in 2009.

Holy crap!! :) How far is one loop? does it continue to be mostly gravel, lite on traffic?

That was an awesome video. Love the history too. Had no idea that LA had such interesting natural areas.

Yeah, I (Russ) grew up in LA but had no appreciation for the outdoors. It wasn't until moving to Oregon, that I started looking at outdoors stuff to do in LA. Especially during the winter.

Truly right next door, though very few know that.

Ahh, the beautiful mountains that keep LA pollution in on itself. Well done on that grinder of a hill, I'm with Laura's summary.

very impressive ride and very helpful for someone who is looking for guidance to undertake the ride. Looks like low gearing on a gravel bike would be the way to go except for maybe the last couple of miles before the tunnel. Thanks!

On the way down, hit the single track, which you pick up right about where the trail turns from dirt to pavement. It's on the right as you're headed down and it's a super fun single track. My recommendation, for those who want a little more riding while near the top, when you're at the fork (right side goes to the tunnel), take the left and head to the top of San Gabriel Peak. You can also do Mt Disappointment with the cool Nike Missile stuff. Then head back down to Red Box Road - fun ride, but watch out for the few hikers who are out there. Then head up Mt Wilson road to the observatory and grab a bite at the Cosmic Cafe. From the observatory, head back, but as soon as you leave the gate, look to your left and there's another gate heading down the Mt Wilson Toll Road. Take that down about 5 miles to the single track on the right - takes you to Idle Hour and then back to Mt Lowe Fire Road. When back at Mt Lowe Fire Road, take a sharp left and head to Inspiration Point. Inspiration Point is the place where all those sight tubes with landmarks listed. My favorite is the Inspiration Point tube - glad someone had a sense of humor. When done, head back down the fire road to right where you picked it up and look to your left - that's the Sam Merrill trail and it's marked - it'll take you to Echo Mountain - cool, fun single track, but again watch for the few hikers on the trail. Be good stewards, so they don't think we're jerks. At Echo Mountain, check out the ruins from the old hotel and tram ride up. Then head back to Mt Lowe Road and right when you hit Mt Lowe Road, turn left and in a hundred feet or so, look to your right and catch the super fun single track back to near the gate. This is the super bonus for the ride! Woo Hoo!!! Just watch for hikers and be courteous! Fun ride that won't kill you and you'll want to come back and play again and again!

Mount Baldy Road is a pretty standard SoCal climb. It's worth checking out. It's been featured a couple of times in the Tour of California. GMR and/or Crystal Lake ain't too shabby either.

Had plans to do GMR, but the weather hasn't been cooperating. Will have to try it again on our next visit.

Thanks for this informative ride review. I was wondering if I could ride up to Mueller tunnel. Years ago we used to run/hike this route. I like that you let us know the percentage and milage. It’s probably beyond me at this time but I will keep training.

"steep climb allows for lots of breaks" -> also allows for a lot of brakes on the way down :) Laura has a rear view mirror on. Heh. LA bucket list.

Great video on this route! I just did it today and without this video I wouldn't have known it existed. That said, how come you didn't go all the way up to the top of Mt Wilson? It's just a couple more miles of very tame climbing on pavement to the top. And from there you can take the Mt Wilson Toll Road as another great option to descend back into Pasadena

It took longer to do than expected with the filming so just backtracked to the car.

Oh yeah #LAsucksforcycling I've only done this on a mountain bike, how scary was it coming back down on the Vayas?
@PathLessPedaledTV

+John May it wasn't as bad as we thought on the gravel. Going down the paved 15% was hand cramping!

Also, why do you need an Adventure Pass?
@3j0hn
@3j0hn 7 лет назад
The parking lot outside Millard Campground requires a pass, if you want to skip the climb up Cheney Trail.
@Milestonerides
@Milestonerides 7 лет назад
Ah! Thanks John May. The last time I came up, I rode up through Cheney Trail so I didn't need the pass then.

+Milestone Rides you need it if you want to park near the trailhead past the gate.
