Aha yeah they do the same with some passenger trains over here in the UK, I guess it's a way of getting double the goods moving at one time so more trains can follow

+Jay stebbeds Not so. Locomotives are placed though the train to spread out the load and to allow longer trains without the risk of pulling the train off the tracks in the middle on sharp curves. It is almost always the case in western Canada's mountains that both CN and CP space locos thoughout the long trains rather than load all the motive power on the front end.
