Did not expect to appreciate this dev diary as much as I did! Thanks for your passion and hard work on this. Now I just need a mod to make it thunderstorm permanently
@@CitiesSkylinesYes but where is the initial sharp crack of the thunder clap? Now (6:58) we heard the same monophonic rumble over and over again. Where are the echos coming from all different directions, bounced off from all the surrounding world? Lightning does not sound the same when it strikes 10 km away (slowly swelling, undulating, subwoofer-demanding distand rumble) or right next to you (one ear-splitting PANG!! With no echo whatsoever.) So yes, the sound of thunder is important. There is nothing like the sound of intra-cloud lightning originating at one or two kilometers, straight above you: the onset of sound is a series of separate, sharp cracks, expanding from the zenith, rolling down both sides of you, gradually turning into softer and thicker, heavy rumble, ever lowering accents, resolving into resounding, tumultous ambient rumble receding in the distance. Picking the sound effect from a set of 3-5 recorded samples, based on strike distance shouldn't stress the game engine too much... I mean, you already do that with e.g. car/road sounds. (As a side note: Furiously wondering how can we have rain falling, when the stars are seen on clear, completely cloudless night sky... 1:24) But enthralled to see the views of Pyynikki, Hämeensilta, Tammerkoski when discussing ambient sound. Love it.
I must admit, if it wasn't pointed out how much work went into the sound, it would probably just pass one by, taking it for granted, and not realizing how much it adds to the realism.
I honestly got headaches from CS1 sound, especially the constant beeping and reverb on everything, so realistic sound design in CS2 was one of the most important aspects for me. So far it seems really good.
Besides the fact that the people at Colossal Order really know what they are doing, they seem to be really enjoying developing CS2. Motivated to put all their heart and creativity into probably their best game yet. Keep up the good work!
I only have one thing to say about Cities Skylines, and that is that everything is fantastic, my only minor complaint is that the skyscrapers and buildings don't have a variety of indoor lights they all seem to be a unified warm yellow colour, whereas most buildings and skyscraper have a variety of indoor lights that usually lean more towards incandescent white. Game sounds great btw
I've noticed that too yeah. I think especially during the daytime that yellow pushes out quite a lot. Nighttime definitely suites it better, but I think if they diffuse it a bit more natural it'll be cleaner
I guess they went with yellow lights because many European cities still use yellow lights in their homes. Hopefully we get a setting to switch to white/ mixed lights
I see, didn't know Europe still used a lot of the more yellow lights. Makes sense but yeah a setting to diffuse the lights would be nice. And I don't mind the yellow at all, I just think especially for skyscraper there should be a balance between the yellow and the white, it will go a long way to add a vibrancy to the skyline I think.
Europe uses more warm lights because it is cozy and we are used to it. When you see windows with white incandescent white, it feels very cold and not attractive. I'm not sure where white is actually used?
Every where in the world including Europe has a balance a white and yellow lights in office structures and highrises. Sure, homes are supposed to be more geared towards warm colors but not always downtown and cityscapes. Also this game is in Europe\North America. I am not saying replace all yellow lights, just balance them out so it looks more realistic is all. It's just a minor change that could go a long way.
At first I was like “meh, sound… I wanna see gameplay” and then you guys hit me with best diary so far! The effort you’re all putting into this game is so amazing, I can’t wait to play it and I’ll sure pay attention to the sound design and remember this lovely video every time I play it ❤️
This is why I really liked Exilecon for Path of Exile as well. They got some real nerds up there on stage to talk about their stuff and yeah it might have been a very awkward first few minutes, but once they started talking about the things they were passionate about, it was super interesting and entertaining. Even if the subject was very technical and "dry".
The best dev diary, I think... the subliminal realism added by sound is underrated for sure. So glad to see someone with so much passion and intelligence for gaming and sound design putting together the stuff for CS2! Just when I thought I couldn't be more hyped for this game... wow ❤
Holy them lighting strikes are the most realistic ive ever seen in any game youve outdone yourself with this. I've pre purchased the ultimate edition either way before any trailers and god dam i feel like i need to give more money for the content that we are getting. Im SO EXCITED to play this and i cant express how much i want this game to come out. You can see passion flooding out of this studio and this is what all game companies should do go beyond and not be simple. Just Well done Colossal Order absolute best role models👏
This Dev Insight especially is a wonderful example of what happens when you put someone who is incredibly passionate about way they do in charge of their niche. The sounds in this game are beautifully immersive and are rendered into focus in a way that does not trigger my neuro diversity, only appease it. I often played the original game on mute or very low volume; Cities: Skylines II will be the opposite.
This dev diary really made me appreciate hearing the surroundings of my own city! This is usually one of the things most people would ignore daily, so hearing it just for a moment just sinks in. Also, I love the lightning, maybe when they strike can the city be illuminated for a split second by the light?
I am surprised how much I love that diary. I love all of them but that was different. I love how passionate, calm and respectful she is. She seems like such an amazing person! I'm sure the whole team is! But this left a smile on my face.♥️
Oh my god, she is adorable and so inspiring! Her enthusiasm comes across, amd you can tell she is so authentic ans dedicated. It's really great to see... I mean hear... sound engineers being featured so prominently, since it's such an important part of every game and easily overlooked. Love these dev videos! Let's all be friends ❤
I'm glad there's such a focus on sound...and hopefully on minimizing annoying/repetitive sounds. That can make or break a game experience. Honestly, a lot of times I played C:S 1 on mute (or with music over top of the game sounds) because of the annoying sounds overpowering the experience.
I love hearing the dev's stories as much as the game itself. Sometimes it's easy to overlook the gargantuan efforts the creators have put, so they equally deserve recognition too :D
As an aspiring audio engineer myself, I really enjoyed listening to this. I can't speak for anyone else, and I know sound can be a criminally underrated aspect of games and movies, but I hope she knows I'm listening with all my heart and my best headphones and soundbars. I really get the nearly indescribable way of feeling like "ah, yes, this is finally the perfect sound" and then hoping your vision for that perfect sound is something others notice even if it's through their own interpretation and through their own set of speakers. It's a beautiful way of connecting people together no matter what they may be listening to the sound through.
I've been loving these dev diaries, and this one is no exception. Annu's passion is such a wonderful thing to see! Legit got teary eyed at the lightning and thunder 🥲
It feels like having a job working on CS2 is such a good experience for the devs working on the game. Imagine also having a big community behind the game that can’t wait to expand the game by building mods/assets. These videos are great, keep up the good work.
I did not expect to find this video, this topic, so absolutely mind blowing and enjoyable never having thought about soundscape as a canvas. Thank you for sharing!
what i love about what they've shown so far in terms of sound is no.1: the layering of so many more sounds which meld together and no.2: how it's not so overwhelming as it was in CS1. Often times I'd turn off the audio in CS1 because of those beepings in commercial areas and the annoying sirens which you could hear across the city. Now, the soundscape is much more dynamic, bearable, layered and realistic and it truly feels like a real city, not just a cacophony of multiple sounds fighting each other for attention. The highlight for me are the weather effects. The rain, the thunder, the frosty winds sounds EXACTLY as they should and provide a mood so perfect i might keep the music off just so i can hear them.
Great Dev Diary and overview of the sounds. You can tell she really loves her job. I do hope that there are more at least a couple more lightning strike sounds implemented. Of all the ones shown they all used the same sound which breaks immersion. Add a couple more and randomize them so they aren't all the same.
This made me so happy, excited, and also a bit emotional. 😅 Something very special about listening to someone that's THIS passionate speaking about what they do.
Omg the sounds are dope! That thunderstorm gave me goosebumps, so realistic, kudos to the Colossal Order Team, keep it up guys, we love you and what you’ve built for us!
I loved this dev diary! We underestimate how much sound immerses us in a game. Even in Cities: Skylines 1 the sounds you hear throughout the city as you build are well done. I’m excited to see how this is improved upon in CS2!
I find it so interesting how this game is built! Originally I downloaded CS as something to just play, but as I got more into it, it became something I'm actually passionate about playing as I have learned a lot and also have a ton of fun! Thanks for all the hard work and dedication in creating a memorable experience!
Placing an a preorder for the most expensive version of the game was probably the best idea. What I'm seeing here is making my heart warm, and I feel like I will be spending most of my free time playing Cities Skylines II.
"It's just some code! Why do games cost that much?" THIS IS WHY! There's so much work going into a game and CO's marketing has been able to make everybody hyped about this game.
This actually made me feel emotional. Bravo. People really underestimate the power of sound and music. Well done. So happy. The soundtrack sounds great too. Can't wait!!
This is the best dev diary. All the rest just repeated what was said in the reveal video. This one really put perspective on how things were done. Thank you for the insight
Thank you for sharing. Having great audio experience is incredibly important (in games we can only see and hear, no touch, smell, taste), so all the best for your efforts, and hope everything comes together !
I didn't realize how important sounds are in games. Even though its largely a subconscious effect, this will make CS2 so much more realistic! Great work devs!
I love the fact that sound which is important got such love and attention to detail. This is what happens when someone who truly loves what they're creating is involved. Not only does CO show love for the game but also the player base. We could've just had some generic sound design but aren't we fortunate to have her as the sound designer? Big thumbs up again! 👍
Absolutely loved this. I’ve worked as a sound designer and use sounds in my current job. Love the enthusiasm and the philosophy of her thinking. Brilliant.
Not only was this fascinating, but Tampere looks like a really beautiful city. It's really cool to see where people work from and how it influences their product.
My "oh wow" moment was the cargo ship. It has the water splash sounds but it also has all the hum of the machinery and it feels so "right". There's gonna be a lot of sound exploration and small little surprises in the cities we'll build. Awesome stuff.
Great diary. The passion and attention to detail here caught me off guard. Something even emotional about this. Great to see so much passion and effort behind this game. Didn’t expect to be looking forward to playing this game with headphones, but now I can’t wait. Thank you, Ms Syrén.
She seems like a great dev working really hard to make the game incredible, but also a wonderful person that loves what she does. This was probably the best dev diary because of her
When the sound designer lead says that she loves when the tram bell, this is a clear sign that the audio is within good hands. All those little details that 99,9% people ignore are however what make all the difference. Yes tram bells sound amazing and that detail combined with every other detail will just make for a wonderful experience, and I have to thank the studio's in advance for taking it this seriously.
Loved this dev diary the most! The sound is epic! I love how much she loves her work. You can tell she’s putting a lot of heart blood and passion into this. Can’t wait to get my hands on this game! ❤
Sound is half the game for me- being able to see and hear the environment and interact as if I’m a citizen in the city I’m building is what helps me get into the game. I’m so glad she loves creating the perfect soundscapes to go along with the visuals here, she clearly enjoys and is passionate about her work. I can’t wait to hear the tram effects myself- the bell has made me feel happy since I was a kid too!
Of all the Dev Insight videos, I enjoyed this one the most. The description of what went into developing the sounds for the game was just incredible. You can hear and feel the passion. And just how a movie score can make or break a movie - think Star Wars, E.T. Indiana Jones, Superman the Movie (1978) - it can also make or break a game. And from what I've seen here, the sounds of the game, IMHO, will be instrumental to the overall gameplay. I cannot wait until October 23 when the game is released. Just 6 weeks and 4 days (from this posting).
You can clearly tell the whole team is very passionate about their work, it’s really nice to see and it’ll make a difference when we’re playing, knowing that they put so much effort into it:)
Thanks so much for the inspiration! Recently been working on sound design for a passion project, the opensource OpenRCT2. It's so cool to replace the sounds and hear em in game and come to life! I have lots to learn so vids like these really help! One thing I learned while travelling and recording at different places is something about the sound of thunder. I think from what I see here that might be able to use some extra work. I love the effect of latency on sound, but they all sound like thunder hits when there's so many more sounds you could include. Sometimes rather than full on hits you get lightning high in the clouds which will sound more rumbly, or sometimes it will roll more rolling thunder is a bit longer and deeper. Distance also matters, the further away the hit the less highend the sound will have as those waves can only reach so far. It's awesome to figure these things out
I really appreciate this aspect of the game, I play on console and I usually play my own music and I always enjoyed how the sounds blend with the music I play, listening to quiet peaceful songs to modern music. Pros for the sound developer
I lived in Tampere for half a year when the whole city was a big construction site to put the tram track in. I have not yet actually seen the city with the tram
The more i watch of your dev dairies, the more i get the feeling that CS1 was just a prototype, to test what people want. Dont get me wrong, CS1 is a great game, but CS2 goes through the roof.
It's really awesome to see a group of people who genuinely have so much passion and enjoyment doing what they do. It makes us want to buy and engage with the game all the more since we know the development of it came from a good place!
Alright, that's it, she convinced me to spend all of my savings on this game just with that excitement alone. I really hope she got to capture the sound of real thunderstorms, because if so, give her an Oscar/Grammy/Emmy/whatever they have for sound designers because she clearly deserves it.
God, I hope SO MUCH that you put a "atmospheric wind" volume specifically. I love atmospheric sounds in the first game even very much, but the wind when you zoomed out was far too prevalent. I actually built my city completely from nearly ground level just to avoid it. Thankfully a mod came around to address that specifically later. I want all the atmospheric sounds except for that wind. Make a sub volume please!
Noticed from first gameplay videos that sounds were improved a lot from first game and that already impressed me. When you get them right, it really does make a difference and it's great to see how it indeed is the case with CS2
In almost every video CO uploads you can see many graphical imperfections and clipping in roads and building foundations. Im glad at least we know what were getting and mods will complete this game. Thank you for not lying to us like a lot of game devs do these days.
