Takes me back to summer holidays in my youth, 1976 to be exact. 6 of us combined our Scalextric gear and built the 4 lane copy of Brands Hatch in Barry's back garden. We were blessed with the heat wave that year so it stayed built for the entire duration of the summer holidays.
I remember the summer of 76 , I think we had around 3 months of continuous sun shine and zero rain fall, with temperatures in the 90’s and a water shortage.
Really does bring back great memories. Back in the late 70s, myself and two mates combined all of our track and built a huge layout in in the front garden. We had soooooo much fun!!. Even the other neighbours and passers by stopped to watch. The best summer holiday ever.

I stumbled on this video. What nobody realises is that this is the way electric cars should work. They would just need enough battery power to go up and down your driveway or to change lanes job done. This is so obvious that there has to be a conspiracy preventing it. We could have had electric cars 100 years ago. Job done.
I think I had 3 tracks growing up. I built one when I was in my mid 30s that was really cool. There is a guy on you tube that has figured out how to run cars on A/C current and the cars can pass and run on the same slot. If anyone is interested look up Slot Cars of Northline Raceway . His track is absolutely unbelievable. The detail is amazing. He’s been working on it for 40 years And he assist people all over the world to build a track like his
Me and a friend had an HO track back in the 70’s. It was set up on 90 sq ft of table top. Four lanes wide each having its own power pack. The track was fully landscaped with numerous elevation changes and over and underpasses. Can’t recall how many feet of track was used, but it was about 1.7 scale miles around the circuit. The cars being super speedy (about 300 scale mph) completed laps in about 18 seconds. Can’t tell you how man kids and parents we sucked into the whole experience. They all loved the experience. I know some prefer train sets, but I preferred the speed and competition and skill required to negotiate the course of slot car tracks. I still got a bunch of cars boxed in the basement along with the extra hop up kits that the Aurora sets offered. Better magnets, better armatures, better gears and the like. So much fun.
I built one about 20 years ago. The lap record was 1 min 14 secs. It was huge. We displayed it at the Autosport show at the NEC Birmingham. UK. Thanks to Hornby the owners of Scaelectric. They sent us all the track and cars.
Used to race slot cars as a kid. We did a race we called The Slow Go...where the last car crossing the finish line won. A rule was if your car stopped for any moment you were immediately disqualified. The race usually was a one or two lap. Cheers! 👍
I am so impressed. Skill, innovation, and a cool ScaleX race track. I love it. Not sure what’s going on in the background, but what a great shop as well.
This reminds me of the only cool thing my step dad ever did. (He beat us when mother wasn't around so I hardly look fondly back on my childhood). One Christmas him and mother got us some kind of slot car track, and he took it into our garage, as we had a massive garage that he built, and he along with a friend over a weekend custom made a table for it. Decorated it and everything to make it look like an actual track, and mounted the table to a hinge they put on the wall so it could fold up and out of the way when more space was needed to do something while in the garage. We spent countless hours in the garage playing on it.
When I was a kid in the sixties I had one of the earliest sets. We made a table then I soldered the tracks together and glued them to the table. That was the only way to make it work reliably.
I wish i knew of this foam several years ago when building my 3mx2m portable scalextric track. Now me and friends are about to tear it apart to reuse the tables for alternative projects
I built one slightly larger in my attic circa 1980. I attached plywood to the rafters making a huge table. I put a whole in the middle and I would control from there.
I literally LOL’d when he built the thing backwards and didn’t just turn the power source around. And wasn’t it “amazing” how the track had a circuit the first time? That “never happens”.

I had the 4 lane version for Christmas and I used it as a two lane set up , but because of the length of the track electrical resistance limited the length that I could use
I fly First Person View ('FPV') racing drones, using the live feed goggles, and I've spent ages racing Scalextric the same way. It's so much fun!! You should try it too!
I had one I built back in 1975 I did have super8 film and photos, but my ex burned them. It was 4 feet wide 16 feet long. I made it so when done it could be taken apart and stored on the back porch. Had a big track bridge's and so on, and to one side I had a drag strip I sold it in 1980 before boot camp. Was a lot of fun friends would bring their cars and we would race. I like the set up you made here looks good have fun.
Old video I know but new viewer. Great video, but I think I heard every permutation of the brand except the correct one! Scalextrix Scalectric Scalectrix If you do another one, try and say Scalextric! It comes from the original brand Scalex, where they basically electrified it and so it became Scalextric.
Super nice looking track. As you were setting up I was frightened at how steep the ramps were from lower to upper levels but it appears you reduced them in final layout. As you did, I've bought all second-hand tracks, 256 pieces, but I took 2 nights to polish and straighten the rails both the length and the gap of the slot. My plan is to build a 5' X16' table for a layout that like yours will have 2 levels. It took me forever to come up with a layout that actually aligned completely. About how much were you paying per car if/when bought alone?
My first thought was “why do they waste all that space using foam in tool drawers?” And then I realized the whole thing is an ad for foam… I genuinely feel violated having been fooled into watching this.
May think it's wasting space, but we think it's better utilising the space to visually organise our tools, use that space to save time searching around for the tools we need! 👍
I never had a Scalextric growing up we had the brilliant TCR by ideal toys with lane changing and zig zag jam cars I was going to make a full race track in a bedroom I collected 5 full boxes and then I met my ex sold everything off wish I hadn't but if you fance doing a TCR layout would be awesome to see
I'm sorry to judge but the way he just poured the slot cars out of a storage bin like Legos onto the table, it was cringe to me. lol Yes, I'm anal, I'm used to babying all my slot cars. That's just me. But that did not take away the enjoyment I received watching this, I'm really impressed and inspired! First time I've heard of Shadow Foam, what a great product.
Perhaps you could reproduce the shape of all the F1 tracks as we go through the season, starting in bahrain in march, then jeddah, and so on, i dont think its ever been done.
