The intro brings you a rain storm. In the higher notes of the piano, you can hear the rain falling as the notes descend. The lower notes, when they’re rumbling, along with the drums at that point, bring you a little rolling thunder. In that gong (or cymbal) you can almost see the flash of lightening. It all fits perfectly into the context of the song. Nothing is out of place.

Quadrophenia is the third "rock Opera" written by the genius of the Who - Pete Townshend. It revolves around the mid-60's life of a young Mod. The Mods and the Rockers were real life cultural competitors in urban England. The rockers were more James Dean-ish with leather jackets, slicked back hair and big motorcycles. The Mods were very hip, loved nice clothes, italian shoes, certain styled hair, motor Scooters and R&B based music. The two main Mod groups were the Who (a group who became Mods) and the Small Faces, (who were a group of true Mod teens who started a group) "Love Rein O're Me" is the finale of the movie/album - very dramatic.

You think this song is good on its own? Well, it is. Quadrophenia is one of the Who's rock operas, though, and this is EVEN BETTER as the closing track. At that point you've been hearing bits of it (and a couple other songs) woven throughout the rest. My parents first sat me down with the album when I was 10, in preparation for an album-focused tour that winter (which was EPIC). At the time I didn't *quite* get all the nuances, but it's easily one of my favorite albums. "The Real Me" is another one people will point you to (and justifiably so, given THAT BASSLINE); "Bell Boy" and "Drowned" are another couple of my favorites. This was the album after Who's Next (home of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again"). The next one was The Who By Numbers, which has several good tracks in its own right. (For "Slip Kid" they gave Keith Moon a cowbell.)

The movie "Quadrophenia" will explain this album, set in the sixties , when young teens called themselves either MODS or ROCKERS the mods drove lambretta scooters or vespa`s and the rockers motorbikes, in the sixties most drugs where pills purple hearts etc and alcohol, the movie and album is really a historical moment in the life of teenagers in the sixties into early seventies, the picture you where looking at shows you how mods dressed in those days wearing that big parka and driving a scooter, i had the pleasure a few years back watching the WHO in newcastle arena North East England, playing the whole album and mods from the sixties turned up wearing their parka`s and driving their scooters lol a very nice time had by all at that concert and of course the brilliant band called the who didnt let anyone down.

Epic! Roger Daltrey is the lead singer. Pete Townsend sings key phrases in many of their songs too. Bass player John Entwistle got to sing a few here and there. Even drummer Keith Moon got some choice lines in various songs. "Love Reign O'er Me" is from their 1973 album Quadrophenia. It was one of my favorite albums when I was a teenager in the eighties. The Who made a movie out of it in 1979 that basically tells a tale about their generation -- Mods verses Rockers in England in the mid-sixties. Mods rode Vespas, Rockers rode Triumphs, more or less, and they hated each other and brawled in the streets of Brighton in England in 1964. It was the first movie gig for Sting of The Police, iirc. Highlights from that album include "The Real Me", "The Punk And The Godfather", "I'm One", "Bell Boy", and "5:15", the lead single from the album. For a deeper dive into The Who check out "I Can See For Miles", "Amazing Journey", "A Quick One, While He's Away", "Long Live Rock", "Magic Bus" (from Live at Leeds) and an underrated banger from 1974 called "Naked Eye" -- part proto punk rock, part homage to Jimi Hendrix, it arguably features one of Townshend's best guitar solos.

Would be awesome if you'd react to the entire Quadrophenia album. It's a concept album regarding a teenager named Jimmy who is struggling with the parts of life that almost everyone goes through as they change from a child, to a teen, to an adult in just a few short years. It's got some of the deepest lyrics you'll ever hear. On the 3 songs before "Love Reign O'er Me" Jimmy is contemplating committing suicide. But obviously something save him and "Love Reign O'er Me" closes the album on a good note. If you liked LROM, you will love every song on the album!
