To be fair, her mother/creator was executed for creating an Immortal Child. She was scared. And Edward knew they’d probably react that way, hence why Bella, Jacob and Renesmee waited in the car.

I've thought about this a lot: but I fully believe Bella and Jacob only could have worked after a significant period of distance post-high school. Jacob needed to grow up before he could be with anyone.
