Nice build! My only concern is the use of solid wood for the driver/tweeter baffles. Solid wood tends to expand and contract due to humidity changes in the environment. Since the baffles have been milled out/drilled to fit the drivers and tweeters, they will have the most stress and might be prone to cracking in the future. There was a *cringe* moment at around 6:12 in the video, your shirt drawstrings were dangling and hovering right over your table saw blade...all it takes is a second to cause serious injury, safety first.

These little subs are freakin awesome. I'm impressed how low they go even in book shelf size boxes. Good idea going with slot ports with these to avoid any potential clearance issues with tubes (as state on their page). The signal is making my actual subs dance lol. I'm starting a 2 way floor stander build with these but am going with the matching PRs. I know whats said about solid baffles but I never had any negative issues while using them in the past. Coincidentally I chose 1" thick solid oak stair risers for my baffles this time. 3/4" ply everywhere else. I has intentions of going with a more common ply baffle but, changed my mind last minute. I seen the risers and they were almost bang on the right size. The bottoms merely needed 1/4" nipped off. The oak was too nice to resist using. Finished with black ebonize stain and flat clear and those subs flush mounted is going to look pretty great I think.

Hi 👋, I am new to your RU-vid video, I do not know a lot about making loudspeakers cabinets how you have to make the crossover. I have made a pair of transmission line cabinets about 40 years ago only just recently had a Tweeter and woofer burn out on me as my power amp decided to throw a wobbly, I am a retired master carpenter cabinet maker and have worked for an organ building company many years ago. The end product looks very good, But I have to say you should’ve spread glue all over the surfaces of the panels that you’re glowing inside and outside and camp them up to give a full area of bond, this will stop some distortion, I didn’t see you put any gasket under the Tweeter and the woofer, What will help as well is spreading or Rolling on thick glue on the inside parts of all the surfaces, I didn’t see you put any soundproof quilt inside. Are used to roll glue on the inside surfaces of some pipes and some internal components of church organs to stop the resonance and to stop condensation moisture entering the material, Phil from the moulin France.

Those look great. Im curious what their bass extension is and how clean the mids remain while it digs deep into that bass extension. I've seen loads of 2-way bookshelves that try to do clean mids and solid bass at the same time but compromise on at least one of them. That driver looks pretty special and you put a lot of effort into the crossover, so I'm hopeful that you've escaped that pitfall.

I'm wondering the same thing! Apparently Epique claims that their speakers can be both a full fledged subwoofer and mid woofer at the same time due to a special design with the driver. Not sure how true that is but they sure do look awesome

I purchased a pair of 5.5" Epiques to test, and while they go deep, the mid-range suffers. I have two pair of 2-ways using old (NLA-US) 6.5" Peerless NOMEX mid-woofers that go down to 40Hz (by design and my choice) but up to 6000 Hz, limited by design to about 4000 Hz and crossed to the Peerless tweeter at 3.5 KHz. I have a 12" sub woofer for music (more than enough with 500 watts) in my tiny 13.5'x 15.75' (9 foot ceilings) living room. I listen to quadraphonic 15 IPS tapes and 4 channel LP's almost daily. Yes, my LP's are over 37 years-old, but being they have always been played with a quad cartridge on good to for 35 years, outstanding turntables since (I have four for LP's and one for "78's") and my 1975 TEAC tape deck has new heads, both the tapes and LP's should sound as new 100 years from NOW. You might accept the 5.5" Epique's mids, but I wasn't happy with any XO topology to currently available tweeters. The measurement graphs showed what I heard. Maybe there's a tweeter made that would sound great with the Epiques, but I haven't found it. Very frustrating.

awesome build, i just cant get behind that woofer, such low sensitivity, need all 200watts of amp to get good sound out of it. Dayton does offer a few 6" options with sensitivities around the 92db. your getting the same volume for half the amplifier power. if you've got a huge amp, that's fine, but if you want to power it with some little tpa3116d2 chips, you wont get much out of them lol

@anttilankila1250 Год назад
I love the look and the quality of the build, but I am concerned by the frequency response and phase plot of what I take to be the final system at 09:01. These suggest significant colouration at midrange, roll-off of treble, and phase response that literally spans the whole cycle, I mean this is 0 plusminus 180 degrees. I would love to have seen final recording of the impulse response of the system. Do the theory and practice match?

looks good but I'd personally would have preferred a different approach to the design since the epiques are rather expensive, Ida utilized 2 of the extended range drivers in each cabinet with a 3 way crossover. 3rd or 4th order lowpass on the mid as well as 2 order highpass 2nd order highpass on the tweeter 1st order baffle step on the woofer sealed the mids and tweeters and loaded the woofer in a rear loaded horn

The tweeter & woofer are not a good match in sensitivity, which unfortunately complicates the Xover. This woofer's main plus is its excursion but for full range sound, a bookshelf design with a 5.5" driver will need a subwoofer. So giving up a bit of bass depth to have a better match in sensitivity between the drivers, yielding a simpler Xover, which allows for higher quality parts is IMO a better choice.

And when I see these super short ports I wonder how its even possible (I'm a complete beginner but I'm really into the hobby of building custom speakers), as far I know, to prevent chuffing you have to keep the wind velocity below 16m/s but any attempt I make at doing this by increasing the size of the port I get these crazy long ports. Have a look at the VoiceCoil Magazine test. The drivers have a bit of unevenness but very good extension through the midrange. No reason these won't perform well. Obviously less efficient with the heavy cone but the motor is huge and can easily control this driver, just plan to have a beefy amp for SPL. That slight unevenness due to the large surround is is a very solid trade off for the bass response. Really though a Passive radiator could be used here.

@@gregorymorrill7558 use your ears more and eyes less maybe you would like to tell Danny from GR Research that but i suggest you maybe watch and learn what a real x over is first and realize either of us work for anyone but our selves and our ears not eyes and you should too by trying them which you have not properly done either!!! but hey just trying to help you and your sound out if 6$ is killing your pocket book for a cap my bad!Again no sales pitch just facts Jack!

@@rexxx927 Danny at GR is selling(shilling) those expensive caps to make money. He has his views which are typically not shared by others who are not making money off those products. You decide.

@@gregorymorrill7558 Isn't every company selling audio related speakers and components trying to make money? Last I checked that is how a successful business functions! Simply trying better components in the crossover can make quite a difference, I speak directly from experience. Remove anything magnetic and use good quality parts, that don't have to break the bank either. But if you are just going to pick sides and argue about stuff, you probably don't really care about great sound anyway! I'll bet Danny's system is better than any of ours!

@@Erikdidit Yeah sorry mate! On a positive side - more to explore. 😀If I might suggest try some SB Acoustics tweeters. Amazing performance across the board.

Just cross them over around 2500 hz just above the low end of the tweeters, most tweeters only go down to 2khz buy some cheap coils and caps & once you got it buy good ones, you only need 1 coil & 1 cap add an lpad if the tweeter is too loud, don't waste your time and money on 2nd and 3rd order xovers, don't use resistors
