Understanding the Viscosity Index: History, Challenges and Proposals
This podcast discussion, in which lubrication experts discuss the important role of the Viscosity Index in the oil industry, features prominent industry figure Jack Zakarian. He explains the history of the Viscosity Index, its implications, and how the present scale hampers low viscosity oils. He also proposes potential improvements to the current scale that could make it better suited to the modern industry needs. Consequently, the podcast seeks to make industry players aware of the Viscosity Index's challenges and work towards solutions that will enhance its fairness and accuracy.

Typically brilliant history, analysis, and discussion by Dr. Jack. As advertised, so much more to this spec than is usually ever considered.

Yet another rating and term that is not exactly indicitive of oil specification/charecteristics on a linear scale. Thanks mate. I did notice that the majority of Penrite and Nulon oils regardless of group 3 or 4 seem to be around the 150-170 range. But now with 16 different ways of measuring, how do you compare them.

Ahh, I remember being a young chemical engineer entering an old and ossified manufacturing industry (in my case, paper) after graduating from college in the mid 70's. And the more I dug in and the more questions I asked, the more discrepancies I found. And somewhat to my surprise, they didn't listen to me either.

ESG criteria is coming for all of us...even in gaming and movie industry. But serious question: Low viscosity oils use less oil as I understood so... If we have a car that is using 0w8 oil(Toyota), would it be beneficial for better lubrication to use 0w30 at the cost of some fuel economy? Or, do 0w8 oils have enough additives to have the same lubrication properties as 0w30? I understand that modern engines have tighter tolerances, but then again they still have to have enough space between components for metal heat expansion. Edit: I also understand that the answer is probably controversial af especially form an oil engineer.

In 0w8 your engine parts are running on additives (moly, boron, zddp, calcium), because it goes under mixed and boundary lubrication at operating temperature ... Now with a 0w30 its parts will float and run without such constant need of the antiwear additives, most of the time In hydrodynamic lubrication. That's what I concluded after 15 years studing oils and tribofilms.

Questioning everything is how we move forward. I guess it must be harder to instigate change in such an entrenched system

So the VI of Poe Jet Oil II should be 137 instead of 129. The same as a good mineral 20w50, with lotsa VII...

The higher the viscosity index, the higher the evaporation loss (Noack). However Castrol did a real good job on their latest Castrol Edge 0w30 LL, which has a VI of 205 while the NOACK was kept below 10%. Ravenol 5w30 PAO oils have the best compromise between VI and NOACK. Add to that Liqui Moly 5w40 Leichtlauf which has a VI of 190 with a Noack of 9.9%. The VI matters only when the driving conditions are subject to many variances, unstable driving and erratic ambient and environmental changes. Cruisers and trackers would care less about the VI but rather the Noack and Viscosity at 100C.

The VI for LL01 is 164, not 200+

@hanynowsky Месяц назад
@@chippyjohn1 you read the data sheets from 2015. The spec changed in 2022. Ll01 has a VI of 194 LL04 had a VI of 205.

@@hanynowsky I looked up the 2022 data sheet, but just as this video suggests, the testing methods from 2015 to 2022 are different. So which one do you acknowledge. Is the VI actually different, or is it just measured differently?
@chippyjohn1
@chippyjohn1 Месяц назад
@@hanynowsky okay, just read that both methods are the same according to one website. From 165 to approx 200 is a big jump.
@hanynowsky
@hanynowsky Месяц назад
@@chippyjohn1 the methods have been superseded in a positive way and yes the VI has improved. 0w30 from Castrol is doing better than the older 5w30 formula.

Too much detergent or TBN additives compete with zinc? Too much polymer for viscousity improvement + prolong usage to 10,000miles will incease desposits? So will a 10W40 semisynthetic be having more % VI compared to a 5W30 semisynthetic from the same brand?. Also curious that the latest API SP 10W40 semi synthetic, Super Mobil with Friction Fighther, does not show on the bottle if it able to meet MB299.3 spec or any other OEM spec like for GM, VW or BMW. Does engine oil meeting API SP be having less % VI polymer compared to 10W40 of API SL or SM grade. At my locality the ambiemt temperature never ever drops below 68 F. In page 453 of year 2006 handbook it says my engine can be filled from 20W50 and all 5 other grades down to 0W30. So far the engine uses about a quart of oil every 6000 miles. Since my usage is only 5000 miles annually I plan to use semi synthetic 5W30 or 10W40 for annual oil change. Regards.

Why are you even looking at oil that are only up to API SM? Get an oil that meets MB229.52 and VW 504/507, those are more or less the best oils you can get I don’t even think there are API SP semi synthetic oils, they are worthless compared to a POA/Ester/GTL synthetic oils

@@alexstromberg7696 🤣🤣 I am more of old uncle style of driving. My 2006 Mercedes usage had dropped to 6000 miles per year. Oil top up is still not more than 0.5Q before oil change. 80% of the driven miles are below 3000rpm. From 4000 to 4500rpm the driven miles are less than 5%. For >80% of 6000 yearly miles the supercharger does not come on according to the dashboard mounted OBD2. Area temperature doesn't go below 68 F. Install an oil pressure sender & oil pressure gauge. It is getting 1bar oil pressure at 750rpm idling with coolant at 195F. At 177 F it would be 1.5bar. Typically will not bring engine towards 3000rpm unless coolant is above 160F. All things considered the recently purchased semi synthetic Super Mobil 10W40 API SP should do just fine. As usual will cut open the used oil filter after the oil change 🤣. Regards
