New Series! Unscripted Saturdays!
Every other Saturday we're bringing you new content that throws the script out the window. Real talk about real issues for visual and audio artists. Some philosophy, some technical, some ... somewhere in between.
This series is geared towards creating dialogue with our viewers and getting new content to you on a more regular basis.
In this inaugural episode, Dale discusses what motivates artists. Why are we even artists in the first place? This is especially true for those who seemed to hit a plateau or an impasse in their career or their output. We think this first episode is relevant to just about anyone!

This was great, more people need to watch this. Pandering to algorithms and worrying what others think is a path to nowhere.

Thanks Simon! Yeah, in fact I have it from very good sources that RU-vid itself agrees that “good” does not play into their algorithms. So lots of amazing artistic work isn’t being seen. So, by trying to shape our work for likes or approval is now scientifically speaking (if we look at the data), not at all advantageous for anyone. So, better just make what you want anyways… Thanks for the great comment!

Thanks for the video. Yeah, the unscripted format is nice. Can't decide if I like jump cuts or fades better in these types of videos. (Yeah, I know nobody does fades anymore.)

Stumbled across this channel, thanks. I am a university lecturer in Environmental Studies. During the pandemic I started to self-record some lectures and then started to leave home snd record with a nature preserve as a backdrop. Or whatever. While it doesn't sound like "art" like you sre saying, I was learning how to make more engaging (? I hope,) recorded lectures than just talking lecturers sitting at their desks. Fadt forward to 2023/2024 the need for recorded lectures conforming to the script of a particular class/course is now much less. Yet in my mind the need for "lectures" about topics id more relevant and interesting and I am now not confined to a given course. Sure I sort of have some sorts of personas in my mind when making whatbI do but I am trying to make things for me that others might find interesting. And I can feel the production value increase while two more things are happening: 1. parts of my "lectures" are less and less lectures and I depart more often from my script and 2. I am finding that I am forcing myself to learn new academic content that gets woven into themes and topics I bring up. I want to talk sbout nee things in different ways or at least different compared with on campus. And I have a lot of topics to explore snd cover but not enough time to managed what I want to do. A side note: when it comes to having a "converstion" after the fact in the comments, sometimes there is a great video but not so much 'conversation' that follows. Could it be that these sre different skill sets: making grest videos and then engsging in text conversations below the video?

Thanks for these great comments, Joe. Your insight as an educator is super fascinating and very relevant. I think that changing up the backdrop is a creative solution to a challenge, and it absolutely classifies as an artistic choice. I see art solely as a method of communication, and by that - artistic choices make an impact on how ideas are transmitted and held on to. I think you've made some excellent choices. Lecturing isn't easy for either party!

I like this format! Asking why is a nice break from all the gear discussion.
