In 2022, I was blessed with the opportunity to undertake a course taught by Professor Pearcey centered on the developing manuscript for The Toxic War On Masculinity. As is the case with all her work, it is magnificent and cuts to the heart of things. Scholarly and comprehensive, she gives much needed clarity, shedding light on surprising facts about the history of concepts of masculinity, showing how the predominating ethos for manhood in the western world degenerated so badly and carving a road for the recovery of a healthy, biblical masculinity. I was amazed to learn just how much evangelical teachings have absorbed assumptions about masculinity rooted in 19th century secular thinking (Darwin, Freud) and the fragmenting impact that the Industrial Revolution had on the family and male identity. For me, the big takeaway from this book is that contrary to today's narrow, truncated and often demeaning assumptions about masculinity, it is not toxic, let alone synonymous with immorality. Masculinity is inherently good and synonymous with virtue. We should be grateful for Christ-like men, for it is in Jesus Christ that we find the true embodiment of masculinity as God designed it. We must root masculinity in the 'right worldview' as Francis Shaeffer would say.

As a man who during the pandemic took on the teaching of my son and then decided to continue homeschooling even when schools returned, I can tell you that there needs to be a conscious decision to sacrifice your own ego, your time, and your own private space. By first understanding that right fatherhood requires sacrifice, and secondly to be willing to make such a sacrifice, you can then fully experience the beauty and fully feel the gravitas of the role of right fatherhood. This is a sacrifice and commitment to your own child, but also to the society and human civilisation generally, and therefore to the formation of God's kingdom and the new creation. Fathers were once sons, as our children will one day be grandparents, it is an age-old cycle. The inability and unwillingness to sacrifice one's personal ambitions for the sake of the fatherly role in the above cycle is the break in the chain that leads to the degradation of the society, and eventually the kingdom of God. Thanks Marcus for your interviews - my favourites are the ones with Bernardo Kastrup and Kingsnorth/Holland.

Can you add the books you cite during the interview in the description?

If I had the time, I would. Sadly, I doubt I will have it.
