Episode 109 | Getting Real with the Enneagram: Five - The Observer 

Being as a 5 myself I think that what we truly love is MASTERING something. I think it goes deeper than just learning. I take years.. 5 -10 to truly master one thing. That's what makes me happy as a 5!

As a 5, I get bored soooo fast with work stuff. It's my biggest weakness and I've never figured out how to fix it. I have to constantly be learning or being creative or I stop applying myself and get lazy. I can't just switch careers or go back to school, single mom life, but even going back to school is something I have seriously struggled with for years. I can't get past the logic of paying for classes I don't want to learn about, benefit me in no way, for a degree I may or may not use to pay off student debt. I also get called cold or intimidating all the time, it's my poker face, dating is HARD!! Stay strong 5s, you're not alone 😊

My guess is that at least 98% of all 5s are introverts. They all grow up in a world, which is designed for extroverts and it is extremely difficult for them. It makes 5s feeling wrong already from childhood. 5s are very empathic and emotional people, they just get drained by it and need time for themselves to charge their very small (energy) battery :-) The hug story got me laughing, my daughter who is a 5 just is not fond of hugging and holding hands.

Phones are for data collection. So true for us 5's. And yes, fives tend not to initiate social interaction. A sense of relief when finding out you are a 5, yes, it's this feeling of "now I know why I do what I do."

Where my fellow 5W6’s at? I generally hate unrealistic movies. I am always pointing out flaws in stupid movies. People often think I am unhappy because I have a “poker face”, or I am thinking about something else in my head.

I’m an extroverted 5 so we exist. Just rare. I’m a 5 who has a lot of energy which I make no effort to preserve everyday, will pick being with friends over alone time every time, and can go weeks at a time without alone time. 5’s process internally but that doesn’t automatically equate to being an introvert. So I appreciate y’all didn’t assume all 5’s are introverts because most people do and the stereotypes aren’t helpful.

I gonna disagree with that guy that said that isolation is never good. To grow the most powerful and important part of ourselves (spiritual) we must be in isolation. I was talking to my sister (E7) the other day that how lucky I am to be a 5 because allow me to enjoy all this spiritual awakening like anybody else.. She struggle to be at home in peace with her own self, she needs people around and some kind of entertainment going on. Being a 5 allows me to seek the truth of the universe and now I’m ready to help a lot of people in this ascension process.. Solitude it is amazing because Is the only way to know yourself in a deeper, mystical way.

As far as their discussion on 5's moving onto whatever else after their done learning...SO TRUE. Once I "master" something in my head I'm done with it even if I haven't fully mastered what I've studied objectively.

I identify as type 5w6 and you don't see much about us on YT. I am praying about how to incorporate introducing it on my channel and ANY feed back from others about what they want to see when it comes to a 5w6 is so helpful! This series is SO helpful!! I love this!

I always thought I felt more comfortable at party's helping in the kitchen or what ever because I like to make it feel like home, but now that I think of it sooo true I used it to get out of being with people. I'm a 5, high 9,6. I really am digging this series, learning more about others and more on myself. Thank you!

Two of the best days ever was just me walking around San Francisco for 9 hours, there's just so much to see there. That definitely made me chuckle when she said that.

As a 5, I also watch other types panel as observation and study. But this one has so much connection to me. Yes, as a 5, I am good at regulate my emotions, I won’t let it to manipulate me. I don’t like someone needy around me neither.

Oh my gosh!!! He said circle the wagons!!! The girls at my youth group are really close and we use this term all the time. It's imagery of the wagons from the Oregon Trail (we live in Oregon) circling together at night to protect each other and the valuables inside. When one of us needs prayer or encouragement we call CIRCLE THE WAGONS and speak the truth of God's word into that girl's life.

One person was concerned with someone not being 'in the word' enough. Reading the Bible so much takes a person into their head, and keeps them from connecting more strongly in the heart with God. This is actually a systemic problem throughout the church, not just with 5's.

I test intj 5w4 and I loved the video. Very informative and I could so relate to what was said about 5s specifically seeing things as flaws when I was younger because it was different from those around me. Do you have a video on career paths for 5s? I’m curious because contrary to popular belief I teach ( English-high and middle school) and I absolutely hate it. It doesn’t feel like a natural fit for me and never has but research is my JAM. I literally haven’t figured out how to curtail it into a job/career if I transfer to another field. Any insight?

Healthy 5’s would do enough research to understand that tropical fish shouldn’t be taken out of their natural environment, (often by poachers) so we don’t have tropical 🐠 fish tanks. Wisdom.

Good content. Good job overall on this episode. My only criticism is that it would have been better if the type-3 pastor interrupted the type-5 panelists less, letting them speak more. At times the type-5 panelists were building a great insight and, bam, the type-3 pastor interrupted. After all, if the type-5 panelists are the actual type-5s, they should be allowed more time to express what it is like being a 5. They are wise and insightful, they should be allowed to speak more. And yes, I am a 5.

I recently discovered the enneagram and downloaded the audio version of The Road Back to You to learn more about it. I came across this video randomly and had to pause to comment. As I sat and listened to the 5 chapter, I cried the entire time. I'm 32 years old and for the first time in my life, I finally felt understood. It's nice to hear your reactions as well

I'm an extroverted 5w6 but I'm more of an ambivert. I am very outgoing in smaller groups but I don't necessarily like big parties. But I also NEEEEED time to myself. I can't always be out but I also can't always be in. But my highest score after 5w6 and 5w4 was a 3w2 which explains a lot about me too. Very conflicting. Haha

I'm a 4 with a strong 5 wing, and hearing about 5s calms me down and comforts me for some reason.

5w4 here.. i barely found out about the enneagram personality test and was surprised to find that there are people out there like me. I wasn't sure why I was such an outcast, some kind of robot for always being on my computer and anti social... its how I've always been. I'm looking back on my past and im understanding everything now, my introvert nature and my anxieties. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm glad I'm not alone.. whether or not ill actually make contact with my "tribe" still remains to be seen. I'm unsure why or how Christianity fits into all this... I was raised Christian and i did ask god to help me find a new way, help me better myself.. then i found this and this pastor talking about my behavior... its all a bit overwhelming but ill continue because i don't want to be detached anymore, i want to have meaningful relationships. I feel like I've started heading in the right direction. Thanks for talking about it 3 years ago :)

I think it’s safe to say most 5s are super self reflective and feel like aliens 90% of the time. We are super stubborn of how and when we socialize. Sometimes I’m ready to socialize when no one is and the party is over.

Yes! I wash the dishes at other people's houses so I don't have to interact. I'm just happy to be out of my house😂

I also can SO relate to the lady and the guy with the glasses....kindred spirits indeed😊 it’s interesting that the pastor is clearly leading the discussion but is not a 5. Sometimes it’s difficult to convey a truth if it doesn’t personally resonate with you. So often times 5s are really misunderstood and the perfect example was when he called the young man with the glasses on the “death stare”. Lol

What she said about the movie stuff. Yes. I also won’t cry about the service men thing either tho. The only movies that make me emotional are call me by your name and the Harry Potter series. And by crying I mean 1-5 tears.

How do I know if I’m a type 3 who is aspiring for success in a career area predominantly populated by 5s with type 5 type activities versus a 5w6 that’s just a tad more presentable and extroverted than the average 5? I can be decently sociable, it’s just not part of my goals to work on that as much as other things

YES! I don't think i'm actually a 5 ( My 5, 6, and 9 are all high 90s with 1 point difference), but it is high, and I concur with much of what was said. - #NoNewHugs I've learned to just stand there and take the hug stiffly.. much like my posture when having blood drawn. -The Notebook is awful and romanticizes premarital relations ( my 1 is at 88). - I must be competent...also... oh incompetence. I wrote off Matthew Henry for his explanation of Proverbs 8 .. and Blue Letter Bible for promoting it. - Community Groups.. I'll help you join one.... but...... #NoNewSharing

Yeah, say a 5 comes out of their shell and says, "You're gonna be Bob the Tomatoe" to someone who totally misunderstands. Well, a 5 may store that as, "people do not have a specific or even a given range of behavioral response", so a 5 might store that as people are wildcards or random. Then, you would expect a 5 to determine how much of a wildcard you are before they allow you in.

Nothing against you guys, but one thing I wish is that the enneagram could be separated from a specific religion and age group. I truly believe anyone regardless of age or religion (or even if your not religious like me) could benefit from the enneagram!

This is my first debrief listening in. But I just wanna say, and apologize because I have A.D.D. So I don't meant to shift a conversation on a dime. Like hey look at that low flying plane, when you are opening up to me at the moment. But I really relate, and hate that about me. I never mean to not pay attention just because a butterfly flew by. So please know that it is a thing. I hope if it happens to you please don't hate us. I love you all, and truly want the best for everyone in the name of Jesus. My daughters a 5, and I see her 0nce every two weeks. So pray for me. Please. I thought she was just ignoring me, or just didn't Love me. But, Then I finally get her to open up, and I am like LOOK at that wart on that frog! Right!?
