The unknown adapter is probably the one you want to use that gives enough volume for the wastegate to dump exhaust pressure into... and it's the stickers that add the 10hp!! You're a sick pup, I appreciate your efforts here. :)

I've been watching for a few months and loved all your progress but this build is evolving beyond my comfort zone and my wallet. I'm never going to put a turbo on my build. I will still watch every episode but not as enthusiastically. Give me a carburetor and a set of points and I will get home. If any one of your sensors fails, Your walking! So no longer an apocalypse vehicle. I will wave as I pass you on the road at 47 MPH driving my 212, No promisses on not taking your food and women.

I totally understand the apprehension toward the fuel injection and the turbocharger. These additions are not really necessary because the car is more or less fine without them. These mods are being done to explore the possibilities of modern power adders. The alternative is of course carburetor jets and offset crankshaft keys. both being very affordable, but we have already done these mods before on the 212cc engine. Anyway, if you pass me on the side of the road with your 212cc rig, at least wave.

The second flange you pointed out is the one you want to use if you're going to utilize the internal wastegate. The flange with just a hole is for if you're not using a wastegate, or if you're using an external wastegate.

Two things: A) 40 years ago, it took automakers hundreds of millions of dollars to design/engineer/build rudimentary TB FI. Now? Hey, lookit this cool FI kit I got on ebay for a price less than a few six packs of craft beer! Amazing. Which leads to... B) Yeah. This FI is designed to work on a wringer washer but I can make it work on the 420 Hemi. Really? I still sweat blood changing/rewiring an updated power window module. And, don't even get me started on the turbski that was left in the dryer too long... To this old man, very impressive, indeed! :)

Looking forward to these modifications, if it's not too much work, it would be super interesting to see a dyno comparison between the fuel injection system and the carburetor. I know it should be more efficient and make more power, but I've always been curious as to how much of a difference it is and this seems like the perfect time to make a comparison with that being the only variable

That turbo also came on the late 1980’s Chevy Sprint Turbo. For those that don’t know, that was a rebadged Geo Metro/Pontiac Firefly. On that motor(1.0L 3 cylinder) the turbo was actually on the small side. For the 420cc motor, it should work great!!! That turbo does not have positive oil bearing seals so if you ever try to do a draw through setup(an easy setup with a carb) then it will quickly start puking oil out of the compressor, which would then get sucked into the engine. Just a little FYI! The fuel injection setup fixes that problem.

The Chevy Sprint Turbo utilized multi port fuel injection instead of throttle body injection on the Metro. So the intake manifold was completely different. If you ever look closely at the cylinder head on the standard 1.0L 3 cylinder you will see flat spots on the intake side of the cylinder head just above the intake ports. This is where the fuel injectors were mounted on the turbo motor. I’ve read about people running a few PSI of boost on the stock 1.0L motor with only supporting fuel and ignition modifications with good success.

The 2nd exhaust flange is for a bell mouth downpipe. That will give you more performance there just more difficult to Weld together.

You have mixed up the oil inlet and outlet on the turbo. Take this to heart when you connect it all up and your turbo will last longer than 30 seconds :)

I bet if you combined Water-Methanol Injection and Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, you'd get both more power *and* more fuel efficiency. Not to mention cleaner emissions. A win/win/win!

I believe the second exhaust flange you mentioned to be used if you're using the internal Wastegate. The flange you first mentioned will most likely boost creep if you're trying to use the internal WG.

Both flanges should be used to allow the wastegate valve to work properly. If only the smooth plate is used, the wastgate valve cannot open properly.

You'll probably want to open the ring gaps on the piston with the turbo. Bad things happen when you pinch the gaps... :)

The "x" ring chain refers to the X cross sectional area of the o ring material compared to most competitors O cross section. X ring claims better durability due to improved lube retention and less power loss. The Honda build is really getting interesting now. Cant wait!

The only time I’ve seen people successfully turbo one of these smaller engines has been with one of these EBay kits. The ECU was able to run a wide band O2 and a 1 Bar MAP, if I recall. Those weldable turbo flanges you had a question about were meant to be stacked, the flat one gets and exhaust pipe and the outer perimeter one goes between it and the turbo.

Funny, I actually put this exact turbo on my honda insight! Sadly it was too small for the stock 1,000cc engine, so now there is a GT1241 on it. Anyway, that other, bigger holed flange is for if you are running it to the point the wastegate opens all the way(on the larger end of the engine size). If you use the 1.5inch oulet instead of the full outlet, the wastegate will rattle on the flange, won't be able to open all the way, and you will get boost creep.

The unknown flange is for the exhaust discharge if you’re running the internal waste gate. If you use the other one, it’ll likely block off the waste gate and cause boost creep

I recommend you go to gopowersports and get a billet bottom end performance valve springs if you want it to last. But I like what I see so far.

Your fuel pressure reg, JB weld a fitting to that small hole in the metal can, connect it to a boost source and voila, now the regulator is boost referenced. try not to connect it to a vacuum source.

Just found you and bingeing all the vids, love them! Unless someone has already mentioned it I would ditch the tensioner and just adjust slackto the required amount of run you have, probably about 12mm or 1/2". Good enough for 200hp superbikes! of slack for the run you have

One of the things that fascinates me about this project is that there are manufacturers making go fast parts for these little, relatively crappy engines. What real world use is there for a turbo charger for a 420cc engine? Even fuel injection is a bit of a reach. Just glad the parts exist so we can seem them played with and explored on the Go Cart.

MOAR! Hey! So I just got a 995CC V-twin from a generator. Ran on propane. I also have a 1.9TDI Borg warner turbo as well. Not going to put it into a car, maybe a mini sand rail. Need to convert from propane to single or twin carburetor, and then I'd like to figure out the compression ratio. Turbo should work size wise with a draw through carburetor setup.

Make sure you either reference your fuel pressure to boost pressure or otherwise account for your max boost/fuel requirements when setting static pressure. And run the numbers on the injector vs pressure flow requirements.

Don't forget to add some ring gap while you have the new engine apart. with the continuous high load/ low airflow conditions this engine will be living in (plus adding boost) you don't want to take a chance on the gap closing up and locking up the engine (or destroying it).

That is a exhaust flang for if your not running the internal wastgate on the turbo and blocks off the hole that lets exhaust around the turbo turbine.
