Breaking Free: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs - amzn.to/2LuAOSZ
Today I am joined by Rachel Jeffs, author of the new book Breaking Free: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs. In this show we talk about her life in the FLDS cult, how some friends smuggled audio books in to her, the off- limits library she and her sisters would sneak books out of, her escape from the cult, life on the outside, her journey to penning her memoir and much more.
As Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), serves a sentence of life plus 20 years in a federal penitentiary in Texas for child sexual assault, he still has an iron grip on the notorious polygamous cult. With seventy-eight wives and fifty-three children, the self-proclaimed prophet’s control of FLDS extends wide and deep, and many of his followers remain silent about his shocking transgressions. Rachel Jeffs, one of his many daughters, is not among them. In a courageous personal memoir of resilience and redemption, BREAKING FREE: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and my Father, Warren Jeffs, Rachel chronicles the shocking details her singular life, from her insular childhood to her eventual liberation, for the first time revealing the facts about her father’s sexual abuse, which began when she was eight years old.
“The most important rule in the FLDS religion is this: Never question the Prophet,” Rachel writes with the hindsight and strength of a survivor. Since that self-appointed prophet was her father, Rachel grew up not questioning the unconventional daily realities she lived or the personal ordeals to which she was subjected. Her closest sister was also her cousin, their mothers sisters. Living in rural poverty, often with little to eat, the children were raised through indoctrination and humiliation. Rachel was singled out by her father for “special time” in his office that led to years of sexual abuse. When she revealed what was going on to her mother, nothing changed. Placed into a polygamous marriage herself, she was sometimes locked away in “houses of hiding” and physically separated from her own children in order to prevent her from leaving the church or giving testimony against her father.
Rachel ultimately mustered the courage to leave, committing the greatest sin of all, which brought denouncement and shunning from the only family and friends she’d every known. BREAKING FREE is a brave and heartfelt testimony that takes readers deep inside this infamous cult. Befitting her upbringing, Rachel Jeffs writes with unvarnished simplicity and absolute conviction as she documents all that happened to her while she desperately struggled to end her living hell. Her emotional relationship with Warren Jeffs remains complicated. She still calls him “father” and cringes to think of him shackled at the ankles in prison. “I am not a victim, and I do not want anyone’s sympathy,” she insists. “I wrote this book to help others who have suffered from similar experiences, whether in the FLDS church, or in thrall to some other circumstance beyond their control. I want people to know that it is possible to not only overcome their trials, but also to use those difficult experiences to help others. No matter where you came from or what you’ve been through, we are all in this together.”
About Rachel Jeffs:
Rachel Jeffs grew up in the FLDS Church under the leadership of her grandfather. After his death, her father, Warren Jeffs, took over as President of the Church and moved her family to the twin cities of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah. While Warren Jeffs moved in and out of prison, Rachel was sent to houses of hiding in Las Vegas and Colorado to prevent her from leaving the church and giving testimony against her father. She left the Church in 2015 and now lives in Idaho with her family.

Her voice is so soft. Makes me wonder if she keeps herself soft spoken, per her upbringing, or if her voice is truly that soft.

Most of the girls from FLDS sound similar. They’re taught to be meek, quiet and to “keep sweet”. It is soothing but it’s super sad when you know why. 😓 They even have the saying Keep Sweet above their beds/on headboards.

Well, the Bible shows many men (and women) who were leaders and could teach the people about God. A true leader will lead you to God, and teach you about Him. Like John the Baptist who led people to Christ, and then said, "He must increase, and I must decrease." There's nothing wrong with that...it's based on the family order, where you learn a lot from your parents, who have more experience and wisdom. The problem comes in when the leader wants to put himself (or herself) in the place of God, instead of joining you to God and letting you develop your own experience. But this problem of "control" is also found outside of religion...it can show itself in political systems, in customs and traditions, in educational systems. It's more a problem of human nature.

She still speaks with what sounds like a child's voice. I feel such empathy for her and all those that Warren Jeffs has brainwashed. This is solid proof of indoctrination. And if it's all you have ever known, then you don't recognize how wrong or ridiculous it is. It's incredibly sad.

@@weetzybat if you listen to the warren jeffs' wives and women in the cult they all speak the same way and that says something. Its so similar to the way warren jeffs speaks on the records it seems like that voice and the keep sweet motto dominated their lives.

Women who were chronically sexually abused as children tend to have a childlike voice. It's almost a dead giveaway of childhood trauma.
@shanonsplantsplantingthyme5663
This is a great book. I have read it several times and it explains just how twisted Warren Jeffs is while also providing the reader with what life is like for men, women, and children in the FLDS.

It made me sad that her publishers encouraged her to "not write about the abuse" as if it's not fully centered on the abuse.

+Siera Gomez I agree; the abuse is a huge part, if not, the main focus of her experience.
@TheONLYgoinnutz
@TheONLYgoinnutz 6 лет назад
Siera Gomez she could have written about her abuse but not others but to put abuse about others out there could, possibly, open the publishing company up for lawsuits. Publishers have to cover their butts. FLDS is notorious for filing lawsuits.

I would have written about the abuse without giving explicit details. Unfortunately, there's a whole group of people out there who would enjoy the details and it could have made her a target for those kind of people. There was probably a double reason for it. 1. They were afraid of a lawsuit, although if it is fact, I don't see how. 2. They were afraid for her safety.... Because of the crazies out there! 😪

I wonder if the child brides are counted among the 78 wives? I don't mean that as a rude question. I'm just curious if the number of wives could possibly be higher than believed if every marriage (whether consensual or not) is considered.

Everyone commenting that they like her voice? Stop. The women are beyond oppressed in this group. They’re taught to be meek, soft spoken or completely quiet and to “Keep Sweet”. They even have it on their headboards and stuff for the little girls. It sounds soothing but in reality is just another brainwashing effect of this horrible group. If you want to see more on FLDS, Kingston’s and other groups Escaping Polygamy is a good show and free on RU-vid and Pluto. She’s on the show in a couple episodes.
